Through its remarkable growth, Pentecostalism has made a robust contribution to Christians’ overall understanding of the nature and power of the Holy Spirit. One area needing further exploration is the theological and biblical roots of Pentecostalism’s teachings on discipleship. This article’s analysis will include considering the work of the Holy Spirit in the process of sanctification, careful considerations of both scriptural and historical backgrounds, and a survey of the landscape of Pentecostal approaches to discipleship. The article aims to outline some fundamental principles and practices of Christian discipleship, as well as to explore how the process of discipleship empowered by the Holy Spirit is at the heart of ever deepening personal and communal transformation.","PeriodicalId":43117,"journal":{"name":"International Bulletin of Mission Research","volume":"353 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139395105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Central to missions is the understanding of the process of conversion. Missiologists, psychologists, sociologists, and theologians have all studied the process of conversion. An evaluation of conversion studies shows that researchers tend to ignore or downplay the role of spiritual agency or the supernatural in the process of conversion. Recent studies in a majority world context have identified spiritual agency or the supernatural as central to conversion. We need to reexamine our models of conversion and further study the universality of spiritual agency in consideration of these results.","PeriodicalId":43117,"journal":{"name":"International Bulletin of Mission Research","volume":" 73","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139392099","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Koschorke emphasized the “polycentric” nature of Christianity—the fact that, for the gospel to be successful, it must become deeply embedded in the local cultures it encounters, producing forms of Christianity that are distinctive from those of Europe or North America, and in which indigenous evangelism, theology, and discipleship flourish. Koschorke also highlights the importance of relationships between the churches of South America, Asia, and Africa, the Black Atlantic, networks of co-operation throughout the Indian and Pacific Oceans that are as important as Western missionary movements in identifying Christianity as a world religion.","PeriodicalId":43117,"journal":{"name":"International Bulletin of Mission Research","volume":" 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139392951","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Anderson, longtime Director of the Overseas Ministries Study Center and Editor of the International Bulletin of Missionary Research. Based on his missionary experience in the Philippines, his voluminous writings, and his founding of major missiological organizations, Anderson was central to the reframing of mission studies in the postcolonial era of the last third of the twentieth century. Under his leadership, the Overseas Ministries Study Center (OMSC) became a hub for the emerging network of World Christianity scholarship. Unlike the rigidity of academic institutions caught in the discourse of secularization theory, the OMSC represented a creative liminal space with the flexibility to innovate. Anderson and the OMSC incubated teams of scholars and practitioners who cumulatively formulated a new approach to the study of mission and to the understanding of Christianity as a worldwide rather than Western religion.","PeriodicalId":43117,"journal":{"name":"International Bulletin of Mission Research","volume":" 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139392940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This year’s focus is on organizations that address the global fragmentation of Christianity by promoting dialogue among Christians. We identify here some of the larger umbrella organizations that seek to represent or bring together portions of four traditions (Catholics, Independents, Orthodox, Protestants), two movements within these traditions (Evangelicals, Pentecostals/Charismatics), and 47,000 denominations. These include the World Council of Churches, the World Evangelical Alliance, the Lausanne Movement, the World Pentecostal Fellowship, Empowered21, and the Global Christian Forum.","PeriodicalId":43117,"journal":{"name":"International Bulletin of Mission Research","volume":"46 47","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139394877","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
