One innovation that can be used in educator preparation programs to better prepare teachers is to establish a residency model. In this model, preservice teachers work as full-time teachers, while also completing their coursework. They receive support from university faculty and peers during this structured first year of teaching. This chapter will explore the need for residency programs, possible features and structures, short and long-term benefits, and potential challenges. In addition, this chapter explores ways to incorporate high-leverage practices into residency coursework.","PeriodicalId":431095,"journal":{"name":"Collaborative Approaches to Recruiting, Preparing, and Retaining Teachers for the Field","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131236445","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Next, the characteristics of adult learners are described through adult learning theories and principles that provide the foundation for successful coaching. Evidence-based components from research of coaching are presented with practical strategies for implementation. For example, activities such as building rapport, developing and monitoring goals, conducting observations through video, and providing reflective feedback are presented. Additionally, real-world scenarios from the field for both pre-service and practicing teachers are included. The goal is to equip teacher educators with the knowledge and skills necessary to implement aspects of coaching into any class or PD to increase teacher success and student learning.","PeriodicalId":431095,"journal":{"name":"Collaborative Approaches to Recruiting, Preparing, and Retaining Teachers for the Field","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114088558","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
