This paper focuses on mechanisms for energy efficiency in uplink of multi-carrier wireless systems and rate control in wireless networks. The problem is modeled as strategic (nonco-operative) game with a resource pricing scheme, where the prices are imposed by a mechanism designer. The users decide on their actions according to both own preferences and given prices. The rules and incentives of the mechanism are designed in such a way that the system objective which is a combination of social welfare and energy efficiency is maximized. A weighting parameter in the objective function allows to smoothly vary the emphasis from social welfare to energy efficiency according to the preference of the designer. The users are assumed initially to be concerned only about their throughput. However, the designer modifies their incentives using pricing so that they become more energy-aware. A distributed optimization framework is developed accordingly in which users have general concave utilities (in terms of throughput) that are unknown to the designer and the energy-efficiency objective is expressed as a convex function of user power levels. An iterative pricing mechanism is obtained as a result, and illustrated through simulations.","PeriodicalId":430755,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Symposium of Modeling and Optimization of Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115302356","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although this approach improves the cellular network capacity to some extent, it falls short of getting significant throughput gains. In this paper, it is argued that femtocells, covering a short range, can be a perfect platform to jointly exploit the merits of both licensed and unlicensed frequency bands. In particular, a framework is proposed for a femtocell to simultaneously access both licensed and unlicensed bands. The performance of coexisting femtocell and WiFi networks operating over a fully-utilized unlicensed band are analytically modeled and are verified via simulations. Impact of femtocell channel access parameters on the performance of WiFi and cellular networks is also investigated, shedding light on how a femtocell can best adjust its channel access parameters to coexist with incumbent unlicensed spectrum users like WiFi networks.","PeriodicalId":430755,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Symposium of Modeling and Optimization of Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124001973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The embedded RSSI information from the mesh nodes are extracted, processed, transformed and incorporated into the routing process. The performance of the rETT metric is then optimised and the results compared with the fundamental hop count metric and the link quality metric by Expected Transmission Count (ETX). The implementation results on OLSR show that rETT improvement on network throughput is more than double (120%) compared to hop count and a 21% improvement compared to ETX. Also, an improvement of 33% was achieved in network delay compared to hop count and 28% better than ETX. This work provides a valuable insight into adapting RSSI information in mesh network routing and the implementation method ensures that the results are realistic.","PeriodicalId":430755,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Symposium of Modeling and Optimization of Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131564981","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The scheme allows all nodes to simultaneously discover one-hop neighbors and identify their network interface addresses (NIAs) within a single frame of transmission, which typically consists of no more than a few thousand symbols. The key technique is to assign each node a unique on-off signature derived from a second-order Reed-Muller code and let all nodes simultaneously transmit their signatures. Despite that the radio is half-duplex, each node observes a superposition of its neighbors' signatures (partially) through its own off-slots. To identify its (small number of) neighbors out of a large network address space, each node solves a compressed sensing (or sparse recovery) problem using a chirp reconstruction algorithm. A network of over one million Poisson distributed nodes (with 20-bit NIAs) is studied numerically, where each node has 30 neighbors on average, and the channel between each pair of nodes is subject to path loss and Rayleigh fading. Within a single frame of 4,096 symbols, nodes can discover their respective neighbors with on average 99.9% accuracy at 16 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The algorithm is scalable to networks of virtually any size of practical interest due to its sub-linear complexity. The new scheme requires much fewer transmissions than conventional random-access discovery schemes to achieve the same performance.","PeriodicalId":430755,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Symposium of Modeling and Optimization of Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks","volume":"34 8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115707314","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many of today's location based services have long been mapping the placements of wireless base stations and using the obtained maps to localize mobile devices. Allowing unauthorized third parties to obtain the locations of femtocell base stations may not be desired by network operators. Localizing mobile devices using the information about femtocell base stations' locations is a service that an investor in a femtocell deployment may want to exploit exclusively. In this work we present a station identity management system that enables preserving femtocell base stations location privacy. Through the use of dynamic base station identifiers, the system ensures that unauthorized third parties are not able to map the locations of the base stations for use in their localization services. We analyze the design tradeoffs of the presented approach for different femtocell technologies. Results indicate that complexity will be limited, and that the presented system creates network dynamics smaller than the existing dynamics due to mobility. Additionally, we present an approach for providing location information to authorized systems at different resolution levels.","PeriodicalId":430755,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Symposium of Modeling and Optimization of Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117045308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent work in [1] has considered a framework for resource allocation in a cognitive digital home (CDH) with a multiplicity of radio access technologies (RAT) such as cognitive radios and legacy radio devices supporting heterogeneous applications. A spectrum manager, named the home genie node (HG), is used to coordinate spectrum coexistence across different services, with degrees of freedom ranging from transmission parameters such as frequency, bandwidth, and power, to the choice of radio access technology itself. Distributed algorithms for the resource allocation problems in a CDH, namely maximizing sum rate and maximizing service capacity, which have been previously solved using centralized approaches in [1], are designed and studied using partial Lagrangian decomposition techniques in this paper.","PeriodicalId":430755,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Symposium of Modeling and Optimization of Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks","volume":"241 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122466537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we study the impact of power sharing policies in IM schemes on cellular network greening, where different spatio-temporal power sharing policies are considered for a fixed system-wide power budget. This study is of great importance in that the pressure on the CO2 emission limit per nation increases, e.g., by Kyoto protocol, which will ultimately affect the power budget of a wireless service provider. We propose optimization theoretic IM frameworks with greening, from which we first develop four IM schemes with different power sharing policies. Through extensive simulations under various configurations, including a real BS deployment in Manchester city, United Kingdom, we obtain the following interesting observations: (i) tighter greening regulation (i.e., the smaller total power budget) leads to higher spatio-temporal power sharing gain than IM gain, (ii) spatial power sharing significantly excels temporal one, and (iii) more greening gain can be achieved as the cell size becomes smaller.","PeriodicalId":430755,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Symposium of Modeling and Optimization of Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks","volume":"139 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115675530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
