Consumer health information is readily available on the Internet but the lack of quality control on the Internet is problematic. This essay examines the following: quality issues associated with online health information, the features and benefits of several consumer health websites, how Web 2.0 innovations can add an interactive layer to basic online consumer health resources, and the role that information professionals play in the field of consumer health information. This paper studies the implications of internet users' increasing reliance on Google for retrieving information. It specifically examines Google search because it is the world's most prominent search engine, and studies the potential flaws in its algorithm, such as search engine bias and the rich-gets-richer phenomenon, as well as issues in the overall website retrieval process. It concludes that due to the sheer number of users relying on the first page of Google results for information, the seemingly indiscernible flaws in the system have a significant effect on the formation of","PeriodicalId":430243,"journal":{"name":"Dalhousie Journal of Interdisciplinary Management","volume":"188 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115640294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper examines the role that the intangible variables, respect, fear, and trust play in stakeholder relationships that are characterized by intractable conflict. That role is explored through a case study of stakeholder groups with adversarial positions on the commodification and export of Canada’s freshwater. Through discussion of the relationship between two sets of stakeholders with conflicting interests on Canada’s freshwater commodification respect, fear, and trust are advanced as the key intangible variables that create the underlying conflict. With these root causes identified the paper explores methods to build respect, reduce fear, and create trust between the stakeholders in an effort to shift their relationship from adversarial to co-operative in the hopes of facilitating constructive dialogue.","PeriodicalId":430243,"journal":{"name":"Dalhousie Journal of Interdisciplinary Management","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127857573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One particularly pertinent metaphor is that of Alice in Wonderland as there are a number of correlations which can be drawn between the characters within the novel and various individuals, organizations, and policies that influence the internet. As such, this paper explores the metaphor between the internet and the characters who appear in Alice and Wonderland in terms of the characteristics they share with specific websites. These comparisons include: Alice and the user, Facebook and the Mad Hatter, and Google and the White Rabbit. By thinking of these websites in terms of their allegorical Wonderland character, it is easier to understand the effect and influence which they have upon our lives.","PeriodicalId":430243,"journal":{"name":"Dalhousie Journal of Interdisciplinary Management","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121035398","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has allowed for an increased vulnerability of the infrastructure. Under the caveats of high-reliability organisations (HRO) theory and normal accidents theory (NAT), this paper examines two predominant threats to the North American energy sector: cascading failures and terrorism. A key consideration underlying the analysis is that NAT and HRO are not mutually exclusive; i t is within both theories to suggest that redundancy and organisational learning are essential for the operation of critical energy infrastructure. This paper argues that while energy infrastructure has several characteristics of an NAT organisation, the high-consequence nature of infrastructure operations lends to a predisposition towards HRO strategies for risk identification and management. Energy infrastructure must be highly reliable, because society expects it to be so – the capacity for meeting periods of high demand must not be disabled by accidents or attacks. Local compliance regarding conservation initiatives and the regulations governing the access to, and use of marine resources is exacerbating these problems. The conservation and control thesis and the degradation and marginalization thesis from political ecology were applied to the current issues in the Marine Reserve as an attempt to understand behaviour motivation. Commonalities among these theses suggest a socio-political struggle where government and international agencies are discrediting local values and livelihood, and are encouraging the overexploitation of their resources. Future management should strive to understand and address these motivations; working with and encouraging the inclusion of local communities into management regimes to ultimately ensure compliance, community empowerment, and the long-term sustainable use of marine resources and the integrity of the marine ecosystems in the Galapagos Islands.","PeriodicalId":430243,"journal":{"name":"Dalhousie Journal of Interdisciplinary Management","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123913572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, with the advent of television and the American citizens' growing need for the truth, the media developed into an entity that no longer delivered second-hand messages, but instead sought its own information, thereby leading to the American people's loss of faith in their government and the war it so strongly believed in.","PeriodicalId":430243,"journal":{"name":"Dalhousie Journal of Interdisciplinary Management","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131100689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet the very concept of “sustainability” itself is a complex, or “wicked”, problem that makes managing this transition complex and difficult. The scope of a sustainable campus could include anything from greening facilities, increasing environmental education, integrating sustainability priorities into purchasing policies, and an endless list of other considerations. Given the breadth that sustainability could have on a university campus, employing tools to help manage this goal will create more effective and immediate change. One possible tool is Knowledge Management (KM), the practice of “capturing, organizing and storing information” (“Imperial College London,” 2010, para. 25). Specifically, a framework by Allen et al is applied to the sustainability in higher education (SHE) problem to help universities take steps towards creating sustainable campus.","PeriodicalId":430243,"journal":{"name":"Dalhousie Journal of Interdisciplinary Management","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123114614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
