They are characterized by rapid acceptance and publication, aggressive email marketing, lack of quality control, and charge hefty Article Processing Charges (APC) (for journal articles) and registration fees (for conference papers) from the authors. They thrive on the ignorance and naivety of early-stage, inexperienced, ambitious, and ingenuous researchers who have to adhere to publications’ mandatory institutional requirements. Unfortunately, the senior researchers, despite knowing the downsides, publish and present their research findings in predatory journals and conferences. The paper recommends that regulatory and funding bodies ensure that no credit or funding is given to publish and present in predatory journals and conferences. Libraries have a significant role to play – they should spread awareness among the researchers about the detrimental effect of fake publishing and conferencing; educate researchers about how to differentiate between bogus, fake journals, conferences, and the genuine ones.","PeriodicalId":42973,"journal":{"name":"Annals of Library and Information Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2020-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46509685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors also use cultural data from dissertation works of graduated doctoral students to see the characteristics of the invisible college. The present study found that there were invisible colleges formed due to several factors namely institutional similarity, research-interest similarity, paradigm similarity and method similarity between doctoral candidates and their supervisors in the thesis or dissertation writing. The present study also found that some invisible colleges have characteristics in that homogeneity or heterogeneity of their study. Other findings also revealed that there was a link between the two institutions.","PeriodicalId":42973,"journal":{"name":"Annals of Library and Information Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2020-08-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46293120","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study employed a qualitative research methodology. Primary data were collected through a structured open and close-ended questionnaire from person in-charge/planning manager/manager/director of the prefecture, municipal, city, and university archive centers in Japan. A total of 92 questionnaires had been distributed, and 68 (75.56%) responses were collected for analysis. Results show that the National Archives of Japan (NAJ) has a good number of twitter and Facebook followers along with a good number of the subscribers of YouTube and RSS. So far, though prefecture and municipal archive centers use social media and other web-based tools, most of them provide only basic information about their archival center. They do not evaluate and utilize users' feedback for revitalizing their service. The study proposed an interactive archive literacy model integrating users, archive centers, and social media tools to make the user literate.","PeriodicalId":42973,"journal":{"name":"Annals of Library and Information Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2020-08-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49088100","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the most diffused scientific performance bibliometric metric – the h index – produces many ties, precluding its use to define a full ranking of the authors. In turn, recently, Jorge Hirsch proposes the h-alpha index (which measures the number of papers of the h core in which the author was the scientific leader)and the associated r-alpha index(percentage of papers belonging to the h core in which the author was leader)to capture the concept of scientific leadership. We suggest using this last measure to break the ties of the h index. The method is extremely simple and provides a complete solution to this critical problem of the h index. To that end, we develop a two steps procedure, which is able to produce a more granulated ranking of the authors.","PeriodicalId":42973,"journal":{"name":"Annals of Library and Information Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2020-08-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46004315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper is based on the idea of OPAC development as a transition to subsequent OPAC generations. Every generation, in the light of genre theory, can be treated as a subgenre with its own communication purpose. As such, it is subject to transformations caused by information technology development. OPAC development is described as an electronic genre transition process, which allows for distinguishing eight OPAC subgenre generations. They were distinguished based on socio-historical development of the genre system and were described according to Shepherd and Watters 1 genre development model. These subgenres are then subjected to genres analysis revealing their basic characteristics (purpose, form and functionality). The paper is divided into two parts. Part 1 describes text genre theory and OPAC generations historical development as communication genre. Part 2 is dedicated to OPAC genre analysis.","PeriodicalId":42973,"journal":{"name":"Annals of Library and Information Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2020-08-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70697451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Apart from good quality research, a number of other factors may be responsible for citing and not citing an article. The study has also tried to explore such factors. Only the top 500 articles with the most number of citations have been analysed in-depth. The countries like United States of America (USA), China, Germany, United Kingdom (UK), France, Canada, India, Japan, Spain, Russia and Brazil have the highest number of articles. The investigators calculated Pearson correlation between the number of keywords, pages, references and citations and it showed that there is no relationship between the number of keywords and number of citations. The number of pages and the number of references in a publication have a significant and positive impact on the number of citations.","PeriodicalId":42973,"journal":{"name":"Annals of Library and Information Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2020-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47664592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

De Solla Price delivered a series of lectures at Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1962, which was dedicated to discussing science and its interaction with society. The collection of these lectures was published in 1963 as a book entitled Little Science, Big Science. Here, Price empirically established that the initial exponential growth pattern of literature reaches a ceiling after a certain time span, which results a logistic growth pattern. This paper analyses Price's empirical theory on the basis of 198 articles that presented growth of literature of variant subjects published since 1913 to 2018. In all, 214 growth models were reported by the 198 articles that analysed growth of literature of more than 50 subjects. It is found that growth patterns reported by nearly 50% articles followed Price's empirical theory, i.e., exponential and logistic growth pattern while remaining 50% articles followed other growth patterns, viz., power model, linear model, etc. All growth models reported by the 198 articles were broadly categorised into five groups on the basis of statistical characteristics, viz., (exponential + logistic), growing without definite pattern (GWDP), linear, non-linear and decaying models. The null hypothesis formulated states that 214 growth models observed by different subjects described in 198 articles will follow either of the five patterns that will be guided by Bradford's Law of Bibliographic Scattering. The null hypothesis is accepted by Chi-square test. It is inferred that the distribution of different models of growth of literature is guided by Bradford's Law where the core or nucleus zone is occupied by the logistic and exponential model, i.e. Price's empirical model prevails in Bradford's nuclear (core) zone.","PeriodicalId":42973,"journal":{"name":"Annals of Library and Information Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2020-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46570268","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To select appropriate metrics and translate into the practical situation through empirical design is a cumbersome task. A single indicator cannot work well in different situations, but selecting the 'most suitable' one from dozens of indicators is very confusing. Nevertheless, establishing benchmarks in research evaluation and implementing all-factor productivity is almost impossible. Understanding research productivity is, therefore, a quintessential need for performance evaluations in the realm of evaluative scientometrics. Many enterprises evaluate the research performance with little understanding of the dynamics of research and its counterparts. Evaluative scientometrics endorses the measures that emerge during the decision-making process through relevant metrics and indicators expressing the organizational dynamics. Evaluation processes governed by counting, weighting, normalizing, and then comparing seem trustworthy.","PeriodicalId":42973,"journal":{"name":"Annals of Library and Information Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2020-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45910206","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
