However, there is a lack of research focusing on Facebook as a tool for collecting research data. This study aims to fill this gap by analyzing how final-year students utilize Facebook for research data collection (RDC). The study also assesses demographic differences in students’ use of Facebook for RDC. An online survey was conducted on a sample of 11,562 final-year students from tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The researchers followed global best practices in designing and validating the online survey. The survey items demonstrated clarity and relevance, with item content validity indices ranging from .71 to .99. Dimensionality and goodness of fit were assessed through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Convergent validity was evaluated using average variance extracted, while discriminant validity was assessed using the Fornel-Larcker criterion and Heterotrait-Monotrait ratio. The composite reliability indices (.97, .94, and .90) confirmed the usability of the instrument’s three sub-scales. The study’s main findings revealed a significantly low usage of Facebook for RDC among students. Age was a significant predictor, indicating that older students used Facebook more for RDC. While males reported higher usage, the gender difference was negligible. The interaction of age and gender was significant in predicting students’ use of Facebook for RDC. These results have implications for future research, which are further discussed.","PeriodicalId":42941,"journal":{"name":"Online Journal of Communication and Media Technologies","volume":"1 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139383721","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data were collected through lesson plans, pre- and post-implementation reflection reports, and qualitative analysis employed inductive and deductive coding. The findings reveal that well-trained educators with expertise in active learning, formative assessment, cognitive presence, flipped learning, and self-regulated learning effectively implement HyFlex instruction. HyFlex lessons enhance students’ higher-order thinking skills, foster interaction, and build a sense of belonging. However, accommodating asynchronous learners requires careful design. The study acknowledges limitations and suggests future research exploring HyFlex sustainability and comparative analyses with other teaching modes.","PeriodicalId":42941,"journal":{"name":"Online Journal of Communication and Media Technologies","volume":"15 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139126427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis was carried out on a dataset constructed by means of a quantitative questionnaire regarding consumers’ degree of engagement with social media and their respective online decisions and actions. Thus, the model under study here integrates these three derived constructs; “engagement”, “decision”, and “action” as its building blocks. The aim of this work is twofold: to validate model’s fit leveraging a confirmatory factor analysis process and to investigate the relations between the three factors with structural equation modelling. With respect to the first objective, the measurement part of the model is verified, and its fit is tested and accepted under several heterogeneous indices. Secondly, the structural part of the model is validated against theoretical hypotheses regarding the relations between the three latent variables. Results show that both “engagement” and “decision” predict “action”, with the former however being more important. To the best of our knowledge, the specific model built around these three constructs is not found elsewhere in literature and can prove to be a valuable source of information for e.g., marketers in their effort to apply an efficient marketing strategy.","PeriodicalId":42941,"journal":{"name":"Online Journal of Communication and Media Technologies","volume":"41 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139127839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Online interaction on these sites provides various opportunities for them to learn and improve self-control, tolerate and respect the viewpoints of others, express emotions in healthy and orderly ways, and think and make decisions critically. These sites also provide them with a virtual space to execute time, form close connections with friends without being spatially restricted and provide space for young people’s self-development. However, the number of studies examining university students’ social networking sites, media literacy, and critical thinking is very limited in the literature. Therefore, this research examined the effects of motivation to use social networking sites on students’ media literacy and critical thinking. The research also examined the relationships between students’ motivation for using social networks, media literacy, and critical thinking. The data were collected using three data collection instruments. The participants were 211 university students enrolled at two universities in Bangkok, Thailand. The results showed significant positive correlations between motivation to use social networking sites, and critical thinking, that university students with better performance in information and learning show better performance in critical thinking and reflection skills. The results also showed remarkable positive correlations between motivation for using social networking sites and media literacy, indicating that university students with better performance in information and learning show better performance in multimedia messages and multimedia organization and analysis. In addition, the results also revealed positive correlations between critical thinking and media literacy. The implications are made based on the results obtained from this research.","PeriodicalId":42941,"journal":{"name":"Online Journal of Communication and Media Technologies","volume":"29 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139125774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study aims to discover the mediating role of academic performance in the connections between each predictor (the Internet usage, biological sex, duration of sleep, fast food intake, medical history, alternate drug use, and illegal drug use) and crime using a large data set from the national longitudinal study of adolescent to adult health (>90,000 sample size). The bivariate correlation between each predictor and crime is presented, as well as the direct and indirect effects for each predictor on crime through academic performance as the mediator. The results highlighted that there is a significant relationship between the Internet usage with crime, a negative correlation of academic performance with crime and positive correlations of fast food intake, alternative medicine use, and illegal drug use with crime. In terms of mediation analyses, academic performance mediated the relationship between all the predictors (except for duration of sleep) and crime. Results may aid education policy makers in deterring crime in the digital age by improving academic performance while targeting its predictors.","PeriodicalId":42941,"journal":{"name":"Online Journal of Communication and Media Technologies","volume":"97 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139127562","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This cross-sectional study utilized an online survey distributed to a random sample of graduate and undergraduate college students (<i>N</i> = 408) at a large public university in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study utilized two validated and reliable 5-point Likert scales to assess individuals’ perceptions of COVID-19 and the credibility of health messages promoted via various communication channels. Various statistical analyses, including Kruskal-Wallis H and Pearson correlation coefficient (r) tests, suggested a positive association between the credibility of COVID-19 information and the HBM and a positive association between the HBM and adopting COVID-19 preventive measures. Individuals perceived public health authorities as more credible sources of COVID-19 information than traditional and social media platforms. The study recommends that public health authorities convey tailored, effective, consistent, and transparent health messages via proper communication channels to persuade and motivate individuals to adopt healthy behaviors during future pandemics.","PeriodicalId":42941,"journal":{"name":"Online Journal of Communication and Media Technologies","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135995144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Technology has become essential for the continuity of the teaching and learning process at various levels of study. In this technology-based teaching and learning, various approaches can be used to help students master learning content. One approach that is often used is flipped learning, which requires students to explore learning content before the class begins. The objective of this research is to identify students’ acceptance of flipped learning in second language acquisition classes based on Google applications. This is a descriptive study, and a questionnaire was distributed to students to determine their level of acceptance. The questionnaire focused on content design aspects, flipped learning, and Google applications. Additionally, students were asked to provide their reflections after participating in this type of learning. This research involved 85 students in the final year of the bachelor of Arabic studies program at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin in Malaysia. The collected data from the questionnaire was then analyzed to determine the mean value for each item to determine the level of student acceptance. While reflective writing is studied by identifying themes related to student acceptance. The study’s findings indicate that students had a high level of acceptance for learning Arabic with flipped learning via Google application. The students’ reflections were also positive, with themes emerging around increased knowledge, improved technology handling skills, the formation of more creative and critical thinking skills, and the positive impact of group activities. Flipped learning has great potential for implementation because students are more prepared to follow the class. Google application is an excellent choice because it is user-friendly and easily accessible.","PeriodicalId":42941,"journal":{"name":"Online Journal of Communication and Media Technologies","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136033341","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
