Many solutions, however, require wide organizational support to be effective. We see the need for a too1 that promotes reuse by individuals or by teams, and which can be used at once, so immediate gains may be realized. Our application, ReUSE, attempts to fill this need by acting as an interface to reusable code. After attaching to reusable components through its Package Browser, ReUSE can automatically create function and procedure calls, and it helps the developer instantiate generic packages. It also provides a compiler interface, interactive error processing, centralized storage of project tiles, multiple editors, and other features to help the developer write and reuse Ada code efficiently.","PeriodicalId":429060,"journal":{"name":"TRI-Ada","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131252128","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current software development methodologies, computer aided software engineering (CASE) environments and computer aided design (CAD) systems lack the ability to represent and manipulate these interdo pendencies, even though the specific information needing representation is often well understood by the designer. This paper examines the modeling of propagations, which are captured using design-level triggers for specifying dynamic behavior across object types. We present propagation constructs built upon the object-oriented features of the Ada95 programming language. Cur emphasis is to report upon our use of object-oriented propagations as part of our software engineering research environment ADAM, (short for Active Design and Analyses Modeling), to model appropriate change notification upon a decision to alter the supporting geometry data structures for rapid prototyping in the manufacturing domain. An example of the propagations involved in the maintenance of topological invariance in the industrial domain is examined.","PeriodicalId":429060,"journal":{"name":"TRI-Ada","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128471799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An SEPR achieves a best-practices level of decision making by simultaneously reviewing related software engineering lifecycle and cost decisions that have a greater overall influence on software capability than does choice of a particular progr amming language alone. Primary decision factors are architectures, design methods, reuse/legacy opportunities, deveIopment processes, tools, programming languages, and lifecycle cost considerations. Some commercial firms already conduct similar “architecture reviews” that could be models to predict the effectiveness of SEPRs and their possible impacts on Ada usage. Will Ada fare better or worse under the new rules of the game ? Could SEPRs become widespread commercial practice, and might this help Ada? Technical and policy experts pro and con will explore and debate these issues on this panel.","PeriodicalId":429060,"journal":{"name":"TRI-Ada","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126862265","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our approach relies on reuse-specific subjective characterizations of packages and hierarchical libraries, and on a set of metrics that objectively measures the dependencies among packages based on those characterizations. We have developed a prototype tool which can parse Ada 95 applications, measure their reuse potential according to our framework, and automatically advise software designers/developers on the ways to improve their products’ reusability. We intend to incorporate this tool into a design/development environment to promote an iterative process that evolves design/code to a more reusable state.","PeriodicalId":429060,"journal":{"name":"TRI-Ada","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116019482","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In general, the dependence relationships are implicitly determined by control and data flows in the program and/or system. Determining various dependences in programs and/or systems and then representing them in some explicit forms are indispensable and crucial to many software development, maintenance, evolution, and reengineering activities. This paper presents a dependencebased representation, named task dependence net, for concurrent systems with Ada 95 and shows its various important applications in Ada software development, maintenance, evolution, and reengineering. Two arcclassified digraph representations, named nondeterministic parallel control-flow net and nondeterministic parallel definition-use net, are introduced to represent multiple threads of control flow and multiple threads of data flow in concurrent Ada programs. The five types of primary program dependences in concurrent Ada programs, i.e., the control, data, selection, synchronization, and communication dependences, are defined based on the nondeterministic parallel control-flow and/or definition-use nets. Various important applications of dependence analysis of concurrent Ada programs including program slicing, understanding, testing, debugging, maintenance, complexity measurement, and reengineering are discussed. ____________________ * This work is supported in part by The Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture of Japan under Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Priority Areas No. 09245223. Issues addressed indude documentation of reusable assets, the certification of reusable assets, the successful application of domain engineering with Domain-Specific Kits (DSKs) for the efficient development of families of applications programs (product lines), management and other non-technical issues associated with reuse, technology transfer between the government, industry, and academia, and reuse and tool construction courseware development (both conventional courseware including a software reuse lab and courseware oriented toward distance learning that is presented using closed-circuit television). The focus of this paper is one of the most recent new projects under Reuse Tapestry -the SCATC (Source Code Analysis and Tool Construction) project (SCATC is pronounced “skat”). The SCATC project involves the creation of a DSK that contains generic reusable architectures backed by a software components library which can be used to create families of tools for source code analysis of both small and large (more than 1 million lines of code) software systems written in Ada83, Ada95 C, and C++ (more languages are on the way). The SCATC DSK is written in Ada95 and its architectures and components may be compiled using the GNU NYU Ada95 Translator, GNAT 3.09. The SCATC project is the culmination of more than five years of experience in writing source code analysis tools’ in Ada. The SCATC project is based in part on ideas gleaned from a tool construction project undertaken by the author when he worked for The MlTRE Corporation, where over 30 million lines of Ada83 software have been assessed for nine Program Managers at Fort Monmouth using tools written by the author. Now, the SCATC DSK provides a fonndation for the rapid development of more source code analysis tools.
