Using an ethnographic approach, I examine how international students from China engaged in a quest for jia (home, family, belonging) by interacting with Singapore's Chinese Christian communities. For these students from China and the Singaporean Chinese Christians who encounter them, the personal narratives on both sides exhibit three traits: (1) a give-and-take relationship between different notions of ‘Chineseness’, (2) a transnational sense of family, and (3) an understanding of ecclesiology that is under negotiation. The ethnographic profile of Chinese hybridity that emerges shows how Walls’ ideas can be refined by a better understanding of co-ethnic Chinese Christianity which lies beyond China's geopolitical boundaries.","PeriodicalId":42820,"journal":{"name":"Studies in World Christianity","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135154878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It will look to the context of the devadāsīs, otherwise referred to as sacred sex workers, in South India, and argue that the hybrid religiosity and silenced epistemology of the subaltern women has the potential to challenge dominant ways of contemplating Christ in World Christianity. It suggests that such religiosity interrupts normalised notions of Christianity that have further marginalised the oppressed women, as the lived religiosity of the devadāsīs acts as a challenge to Eurocentric theology and mission that has systematised ‘the poor’ into deserving and undeserving based upon dichotomous notions of decency. Inspired by the indecent theology of Marcella Althaus-Reid, the paper suggests that an indecent epistemology shaped by the sexual narratives of the oppressed brings to the forefront intersectional narratives of struggle in Christianity that offer prophetic ways of contemplating Christ.","PeriodicalId":42820,"journal":{"name":"Studies in World Christianity","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49145718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The article seeks to answer the following question: how does one’s Christian faith assist women in coping with labour migration and the resulting transnational mothering? In an analysis of data gathered from the participant mothers, the concept of ‘strategising to gain access to a better life’ emerges as central to how the participants navigate transnational mothering as labour migrants. In particular, the participant mothers identify their faith as one of the factors in which they invest. From a theological perspective, such ‘investing in faith’ is interpreted as an integral component of an ongoing spirituality that is hinged on an active relationship with God. On the one hand, their experience of living the faith reveals encountering the sacred in mundane events, amidst the challenges associated with labour migration and transnational mothering. On the other hand, their experience of hopeful gambling attests to the reality of evil or ‘dis-grace’ in the here and now.","PeriodicalId":42820,"journal":{"name":"Studies in World Christianity","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44543975","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This oppression and exclusion are worse for women and girls with disabilities due to the ableist theologies perpetuated in spaces of worship. This is enforced by the regulations that govern the physical structures and boundaries of spaces of faith. As a result, religious spatial politics is intertwined with how the body physically and spiritually conforms to the regulations of a certain religion. In conservative forms of Christianity, the regulations that govern the structures and boundaries are informed by the Mosaic law, in particular the Leviticus or holiness code that emphasises purity and holiness of the body. The naive hermeneutics of the holiness code is used to exclude a body with a disability from sacred spaces: the exclusion is visible for women and girls with disabilities, because of the feminisation of religion and ableist hermeneutics of religion. Written from an African women theology of disability approach, the aim of this article is to explore how women with disabilities negotiate their faith in ableist Christian spaces of worship and to describe African women theology of disability as a pastoral praxis that has a potential for promoting inclusion in Christian spaces.","PeriodicalId":42820,"journal":{"name":"Studies in World Christianity","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41977442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
