Gourley, Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, NM We present here the concept of periodic gain in the design of Fabry-Perot Surface-Emitting Lasers. We analyze and compare our new periodic gain configuration with two typical standard Fabry-Perot structures and show that significant advantages can be obtained. We discuss a possible scheme for laser emission from rare-gasexcimers produced by supersonic jet cooling and excited by an electrical discharge. PlCs may provide higher performance and new functionality in areas such as high bit-rate transmission, coherent transmission and wavelength division multiplexing. Among the key elements required to realize this potential will be low-loss waveguide structures which are compatible with active devices (lasers, detectors, switches). Coils as small as 7 mm diameter have been successfullyannealed. Coilswith morethan 100turnsanddiametersof 1 or3cm are routinelyproduced. The linear birefringence of such coils is small enough that Faraday rotation is not measurably diminished.
