Knowing the lengths of time passengers spend at termini would be a first step to manage congestion by passengers but such knowledge is currently limited. This study analysed London's smart card (Oyster card) data to investigate the lengths of time, especially the time additionally spent other than walking at their free walking speeds, of passengers transferring between suburban rail and London Underground services at Waterloo and Victoria. The study found that the additionally-spent times were on average around 7 minutes for country-bound passengers and around 2 minutes for inner city-bound passengers. The relationships between the additionally-spent time and the service frequency and the journey length were investigated but there was no clear evidence of correlation. This suggests that there are potentially many factors that determine the lengths of the time, and further research is necessary. The obtained results would nevertheless be useful for terminus planning and congestion management.","PeriodicalId":427580,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Rail Transportation (ICIRT)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124475248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both minor and major disruptions must be handled properly, because they have the potential to cause deviation from the original schedule's main goals. In rail track inspection schedules, ultrasonic machine breakdown, unavailability of tracks due to extreme weathers and special inspection requests are some of potential disruption factors. Surprisingly, it is difficult to obtain a single publication that has discussed in details about disruption management in track inspection schedule operation, while an opposite trend is seen for railway operations, i.e., crew and rolling stock schedules. This unbalanced situation presents a challenge, because track inspection schedules are also implemented in a real-time setting. Since proper inspection activities are essential to ensure the continuity and safety of train operations, this paper aims to first identify the potential sources of disruption to predetermined track inspection schedules. The findings are then used to formulate an appropriate strategy for dealing with disruption and a method for developing a practical rescheduling operator.","PeriodicalId":427580,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Rail Transportation (ICIRT)","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129639773","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The railway is an inherently complicated and complex system and extending the service hours increases the level of difficulty in operating. In order to run all the services safely, punctually and reliably, we have to manage this complexity. In this paper, the authors suggest the application of system dynamics tools to model 24-hour metros in terms of sub-systems, sub-components and behaviour. An initial causal loop diagram (CLD) has been developed to study the relationships and interactions between different sub-systems of system. The proposed causal loop diagram is intended to allow planners, designers and managers of 24-hour metros to develop a proper understanding of the non-linear environment of such systems. In metros, due to the high level of diversity and variability, there are many system interfaces that must be managed systematically. Causal loop diagram empower managers to understand the effect of their decision-making in managing the interfaces and related changes. The causal loop diagram can be applied as a system optimisation tool when upgrading the existing metros to 24-hour operation and developing new lines while considering risks, complexities and complications. Causal loop modelling allows a rapid identification of the problems of 24-hour operation and will result in safer, more punctual and more reliable system.","PeriodicalId":427580,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Rail Transportation (ICIRT)","volume":"520 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134458945","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The prospect of opportunistic access to an inefficiently utilized frequency spectrum, known as TV whitespaces, was mainly proposed to solve the spectrum scarcity problem with desirable railway propagation characteristics. This research investigates the requirements of various railway communication applications against TV whitespaces characteristics, considering Rail Remote Condition Monitoring as an initial case study. The main objective is to specify and enhance the QoS parameters for the spectrum secondary users (rail network) in terms of throughput, availability, reliability and performance at speed while ensuring full protection for the spectrum primary users. A simulation scenario using BRaVE and OMNET++ was introduced for a train moving at maximum speed of 80 Km per hour between Selly-Oak and University Station, Birmingham, United Kingdom. Initial results indicate that TV White Spaces system can deliver average throughput of 1.47 Mbps per train. Coverage radius of 12 Km combined with perfectly aligned directional antenna in rural areas can ensure full protection for TV users while allowing higher transmission power for the rail TVWS network.","PeriodicalId":427580,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Rail Transportation (ICIRT)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121056249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Generation of energy-efficient train trajectories can be modeled as solving a complex optimization problem with nonlinear and time-varying variables under multiple constraints of equality and inequality, as train operation is a dynamically vacillating process due to complex railway operational conditions. In recent years Driver Advisory System (DAS) is introduced as the system to deliver optimized energy-efficient trajectory to train operation through advisory to the driver based on static or real-time railway operation information. This work proposes a prototype DAS design using a PC as central unit and a smartphone as on-board unit, with a bi-directional message exchange between central unit and on-board unit. An energy-distribution based model and optimization algorithm is developed to derive and to adjust train trajectories. Simulation results are demonstrated the efficiency and robustness of the approach and methods.","PeriodicalId":427580,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Rail Transportation (ICIRT)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125859557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The commands and advisories provided to the locomotive represent signal aspects, stops, speed limits, and track conditions. Once received, the locomotive performs appropriate actions to ensure safe navigation. CBTC networks that utilize SDR technologies may be subject to cyber security attacks which would compromise safe navigation of trains and possibly lead to collisions with other trains or endanger railroad workers. As a solution, Rail Radio Intrusion Detection System (RRIDS) is introduced to detect and deter cyber attacks such as: command replay, guessing, and message corruption attacks. RRIDS is a rail command specific IDS designed for locomotive and beacon communications security. RRIDS performs intrusion detection in near real time. Presented in this work is the design, theory, and experimental results describing the effectiveness and performance of RRIDS against a hypothetical attacker.","PeriodicalId":427580,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Rail Transportation (ICIRT)","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129513016","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, the Learn from Incidents (LFI) theory is applied to detect the factors that have negative influences on LFI in our study from the perspectives of breadth and depth of learning. Based on the identified negative factors, the HFACS-RAs framework is proposed to establish an in-depth learning approach. This approach is conducive to prompt the Double-Loop learning process and strengthen the organization's incident response capabilities. For obtaining more close-fitting intervention plans of accidents, the relationship analysis is conducted to the casual factors identified by the HFACS-RAs framework and how the internal procedures and policies influence the behavior of employees can be revealed. Finally, some recommendation on how to effectively perform the intervention plan is given and with the comprehensive learning process we can build a formal learning mechanism to improve the safety climate in the high-speed railway industry.","PeriodicalId":427580,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Rail Transportation (ICIRT)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126483876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An attractive solution to reduce these losses, and the associated energy consumption, is the implementation of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) technology. PMSMs are not only more efficient, but smaller and lighter than traditional induction machines, which can further benefit energy saving. However, introducing this technology and the associated control systems can be expensive and complex. Therefore, in this study, the authors evaluate the cost benefit of introducing PMSMs into different railway sub-modes to see where this solution is most appropriate, in terms of energy saved. The impact of regenerative braking on the cost is also considered, by simulating dynamic braking characteristics and the receptivity of different systems.","PeriodicalId":427580,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Rail Transportation (ICIRT)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130051971","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the important technical challenges in realizing UCRT is the drastic increase in train frequency, because UCRT has to meet the very wide variety of needs of the passengers. The authors discuss that the combination of moving block signalling, synchronization control of the group of trains and other more advanced techniques, such as on-board switching, under which the train can decide the route it is going to proceed at a junction unlike conventional railway systems in which trackside turnout devices will decide the route, will help bring the ultra-high frequency operation closer to reality. In this paper, the concept of UCRT is first explained in detail. Following this, the technical possibility of high-frequency operation using the combination of above techniques, and the challenges that need to be addressed such as the further shortening of the safety distance under the moving block signaling system, are discussed.","PeriodicalId":427580,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Rail Transportation (ICIRT)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132880010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Obviously, it is essential to estimate the potential value of each harmonic current within the signal frequency band for the reliable operation of track circuit. In Europe, EN 50238 and CLC/TC 50238, using FFT to calculate harmonic components, were established to control the harmonics from rolling stock. At first, considering that traditional FFT is applicable for steady current due to result accuracy of the frequency and amplitude, the transient interference processing method is discussed based on principle of Wavelet transform modulus maximum for the singularity detection. Then, since the measured current data in the field are usually not the maximal value, based on the least square fitting method, the regularity of harmonic proportion is studied and evaluated after interpolating windowed FFT in harmonic frequency analysis. Finally, adopting the test data of Chinese CRH-X type EMU in operation, the transient current and the steady current data are analyzed to get harmonic components. It is proved that the compatibility between the rolling stock and the track circuits can be achieved under present condition.","PeriodicalId":427580,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Rail Transportation (ICIRT)","volume":"212 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127325315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
