Technique and aesthetics in works by Henry Cowell, Toshirō Mayuzumi, and Luciano Berio from this period may be understood as resulting from entanglements between socio-political and artistic discourses, especially since these composers were closely associated with institutions and events of the Cold War. Idiosyncrasies in their works and aesthetics, however, cannot merely be explained by recourse to the institutionalized politics of the time. They testify to the composers’ increased awareness of global interconnectedness, addressing a (potentially) worldwide audience and reflecting the multipolarity of post-war modernity.","PeriodicalId":42754,"journal":{"name":"ARCHIV FUR MUSIKWISSENSCHAFT","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69132995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

His role in the dissemination of opera in northern Europe cannot be overestimated. Furthermore, his work puts into relief the House of Hanover’s important role of patronage in this trajectory, while his career highlights important changes in Europe at the turn of the century—a time when artists and other professionals began moving away from court environments to develop their skills along freelance models of entrepreneurship, assuming positions of managers and impresarios in various urban centers of northern Europe.","PeriodicalId":42754,"journal":{"name":"ARCHIV FUR MUSIKWISSENSCHAFT","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69133272","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They languished long enough under the verdict of possessing less value and not being weighty enough, especially in German-speaking countries. Avoiding faulty comparisons to Schubert or Schumann song settings facilitates a clearer assessment of Mendelssohn’s compositional ingenuity and sublime melodiousness that serve to capture the tone of each poem. This is especially evident in the largest lied group-the Heine settings- through the subtle compositional means used to reflect Heine’s characteristic ironic shifts.","PeriodicalId":42754,"journal":{"name":"ARCHIV FUR MUSIKWISSENSCHAFT","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69133484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is based on a popular dandy song performed by two vocal stars of the 1940s—Libby Holman and Josh White—and portrays a romantic love story with a fatal ending, told in animated scenes of mannequin dolls, abstract paintings, and objects from Leger’s oeuvre that in the end lead to a collage of discursive differences: the popular vs. avant-garde; the clash between time concepts in music and image; heteronomous concepts of femininity; love and narcissism; and the changing relations between the real and the imaginary, especially in the pretended subjectivity of dreaming.","PeriodicalId":42754,"journal":{"name":"ARCHIV FUR MUSIKWISSENSCHAFT","volume":"101 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69133799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
