One little-known work inspired by Paradise Lost that appears to document an ephemeral staging has remained accessible only to Hispanophone readers in a few select libraries: El Paraíso perdido: Drama en 4 actos arreglado por Ambrosio Nieto, sobre la inspiración del inmortal Milton (Paradise Lost: A Drama in Four Acts Arranged by Ambrosio Nieto, upon the Inspiration of the Immortal Milton [c. 1920–40]) by Ambrosio Nieto Cházares (1875–1950).1 I first read the play in 2015, via a digital copy of the material copy at Northwestern University that my campus library provided me. During a research trip in 2016 to the play's city of origin, Puebla de Zaragoza, Mexico, I was unable to locate a material copy of the play. In 2021, I was, at last, able to work directly with the small (15 cm x 9.5 cm) material copy at the McCormick Special Collections of Northwestern University, due to the librarians' diligent work in securely re-opening access to outside scholars during the COVID pandemic.2 This issue of Milton Quarterly makes the drama widely available by providing a facing-page Spanish transcription and English translation of the drama. El Paraíso perdido: Drama en 4 actos is undated, like many publications by Nieto's press, Casa Nieto.3 WorldCat indicates “[18?].” Nieto's few biographies are brief and often lack specific dates. For example, Aurora Ocampo's biographical entry provides only the decade for some of Nieto's activities: “[e]n los años treinta impulsó el teatro social como mecenas y director de escena, abrió una librería y estableció una imprenta” (in the 1930s, he propelled public theater as a sponsor and stage manager, opened a bookstore, and established a press) (25). I have narrowed down the earliest likely publication date of El Paraíso perdido: Drama en 4 actos to c. 1920 through the advertisement page on the recto side of its back cover page, which is provided in the Spanish transcription and English translation. This advertisement on the back cover of Los Hermanos Villa's book lists the following in the “Varios” (Varieties) series published by Casa Nieto: Una Mujer Extraordinaria [An Extraordinary Woman] Pastorela. – La Noche más venturosa [The Most Fortunate Night] Pastorela. – El Paraíso Perdido. La Reina de las Américas Latinas [The Queen of the Latina Americas] Las Quince Gradas [The Fifteen Stair-steps] Nieto's short, delightful drama draws directly Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost, from which it takes its primarily title. Nieto's Paradise Lost: A Drama in Four Acts expands upon the dramatic elements of Milton's works. Milton's dramatic publications are the entertainment Arcades (early 1630s), masque A Masque Presented at Ludlow Castle, and mature tragedy Samson Agonistes (1671). I was granted this opportunity at the recommendation of my dissertation director, Michael Lieb, and I, who had been spending recent months immersing myself in the history of Milton criticism, was humbled by the realization that I was now working with two of the greatest living Milton scholars. As I sought to establish rapport with Dean Fish, as I always called him, I asked him who were his earliest influences in Milton scholarship. Joseph Summers and A. J. A. Waldock, he replied thoughtfully. And William Empson, although with reservations. “How about you?,” he asked. Although I was surprised by his interest, my response was immediate: Michael Lieb, The Dialectics of Creation (1970)—the initial monograph on Milton to capture my critical imagination. Dialectics was Michael's first book, published in the earliest years of his professorate before he turned thirty. In retrospect, I recognize it as the effort of an earnest and sincere young scholar, a book perhaps somewhat removed from Michael's more mature works focusing on matters of vision and violence and theology in Milton's writings. But it is no less valuable, and especially dear to my heart as I reflect on the long history of Michael's influence upon my own thought and disposition toward Milton. I discovered The Dialectics of Creation at a pivotal, vulnerable time in my intellectual and spiritual development. It was my junior year at Northwestern University, and I was pursuing an honors thesis on Milton and George Herbert. Michael's book, subtitled Patterns of Birth and Regeneration in Paradise Lost, greatly aided my modest study, which focused on pastoral images of death and rebirth in both authors.1 As I read Dialectics, I felt a certain kinship with the author. I did not know if he shared my Christian faith, but he modeled a kind of deep, affectionate, even spiritual engagement with Milton's epic that I longed to emulate. Indeed, as I have come to deeply disagree with C. S. Lewis's claim that Paradise Lost is not a poem that quickens devotion (A Preface 127), I realize how profoundly my first inclinations toward the opposite view were influenced by my youthful engagement with The Dialectics of Creation. Although as an undergraduate I did not have the wisdom or bravery to contact my benefactor, I did, while teaching in China, reach out to Michael by letter in spring 1992 after being accepted as an MA student at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Michael promptly demonstrated his approachability and kindness by responding with a handwritten note that welcomed me to his school and encouraged my current teaching. I met him in person that fall as a student in his Bible as Literature course, for which, in a final research paper on several pseudepigraphal apocalyptic texts, I made extensive use of Michael's then-most recent","PeriodicalId":42742,"journal":{"name":"MILTON QUARTERLY","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135253574","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
