External and internal stresses are responsible risk factors for human suicide rates and fatalities. Medical knowledge and therapeutic advances of clinical suicide prediction, prevention and treatments are ever-growing for its therapeutic progress. Psychiatric intervene is a recent hotspot in this field of suicide prediction and treatments. Molecular targeting and diagnostic transition in the clinic will be a suitable pathway for suicide therapeutic management promotion against suicide-induced human mortality and economic burdens. {"title":"Management of sexual health during old age","authors":"Santosh Kumar Mishra","doi":"10.15406/hpmij.2024.07.00241","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15406/hpmij.2024.07.00241","url":null,"abstract":"Discussion on sexual health revolves around an individual’s ability to (a) be intimate with a partner, (b) communicate about sexual needs and desires, (c) be sexually functional, (d) act intentionally and responsibly, and (e) set appropriate sexual boundaries. Sexually functional indicates to have desire, become aroused, and obtain sexual fulfilment. The author of this work argues that in the context of old age or elderly people, there exists misconception that older adults are neither sexually active nor interested in sex, it no so. They have sexual desires, however, the extent (and nature) may vary. The fact is that older adults are still sexually active, although the frequency of sexual activity tends to decline with age. In terms of need for research-led discussion, it is important to note that sexual health is of lifelong importance; it is vital for overall health and wellbeing. More specifically, older people have specific needs relating to their sexual health. Sexual health throughout the life course is increasingly recognised as important to maintaining one's overall ‘health’, and ‘well-being’ (including ‘relationships’). However, evidence on effective interventions to support later-life sexual health is limited. It is pertinent to note that at advanced (old) age, older adults encounter several challenges in matters pertaining to fulfilment of sexual desire due to complex and multiple factors. Understanding sexual activity of older adults requires deeper insight into physical, mental and emotional aspects of health, in its totality. This paper aims to research into how people during old age can better manage their sexual health. Secondary data (‘qualitative’ in nature) have been used, and method of data analysis is ‘descriptive’. The paper briefly concludes that (a) people of both sexes during their old age are (still) sexually active, and (b) prioritizing self-care (keeping physical and emotional well-being) is crucial for sexual health among older adults. Communication is key to maintain healthy sexual life at later stages of life; elderly people need to learn to be open to mutually finding new ways, that “best suits them”, for the dual purposes of enjoying (a) sexual intercourse, and (b) intimacy.","PeriodicalId":426765,"journal":{"name":"Hospice & Palliative Medicine International Journal","volume":"102 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141821806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This attitude can significantly impact the quality of care provided to patients at the end of life. Inclusion of palliative care and end-of-life care in the nursing curriculum positively influences students' attitudes. The aim of this study was to examine nursing students’ attitudes towards care of dying patients before and after a course in palliative care. Methods: This study was an evaluative, quantitative, cross-sectional study in which participants (n=102) were selected via random sampling. The Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of Dying Scale (FATCOD) was used to assess nursing students’ attitudes during their education. Nursing students enrolled in a mandatory palliative course in the nursing programme at Rajiv Gandhi University of Health University (RGUHS) were the samples. Ethics approval was obtained from Institution Review Board. Data from FATCOD was analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics. Results: The participants’ age ranged from 16 to 31 years, with an average age of 19.84 ± 2.540 years. Moreover, most respondents (92.2%) identified as female. Approximately half (52.9%) reported no prior exposure to information on end-of-life care, and the majority (81.4%) had not attended any seminars, workshops, or conferences on the topic. The results indicated that participants' attitude notably enhanced following the palliative care course (M = 107.89, SD = 11.913), compared to their baseline (M = 100.80, SD = 10.435), t (101) = 4.903, p < 0.001.There is no significant difference in attitude between females (M = 108.96, SD = 12.157) and males (M = 101.25, SD = 6.228), t (100)=-1.768, P=.080. Similarly, individuals with prior awareness (M = 110.38, SD = 13.417) did not demonstrate a significantly higher attitude than those without (M = 106.56, SD = 10.229), t (100) =1.622, P=.108. Similarly, prior exposure to palliative care neither increased (M = 108.00, SD = 12.649) nor decreased (M = 108.43, SD = 11.879) respondents' attitudes significantly, t (100) =-.142, p=.887. Age of the respondents and the attitude were not significantly correlated, r (105) = .041, p = .686. Conclusions: This study aimed to test the effectiveness of a Palliative Care course in enhancing the attitudes of nursing students towards care of dying patients. The finding of this study will help serve as baseline data for policy makers and programmers to develop comprehensive course on attitude towards dying patients among the University nursing students.","PeriodicalId":426765,"journal":{"name":"Hospice & Palliative Medicine International Journal","volume":" 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141830715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various strategies can be used, such as: guidance on energy conservation and joint protection techniques, prescription and/or manufacture of positioning devices, prescription and/or manufacture of assistive technology equipment, development of creative and expressive activities, training activities of daily living, environmental assessment, guidance for family members and caregivers. This article aims to present the implementation of the Occupational Therapy Service at the FMUSP Pain League, developed since 2023. The work focused on implementing Occupational Therapy as one of the professions that make up the FMUSP Pain League, on a permanent and continuous basis; and, in addition, allow undergraduates teaching opportunities (theoretical and practical) related to the multidisciplinary care of people with chronic pain, as well as promoting research actions in the area of Occupational Therapy and Chronic Pain. In OT, a student and the supervising teacher work, together with the multidisciplinary team. Activities are weekly and take place at night. Remote and in-service supervision is carried out. The implementation took place in 3 stages. In the first stage, we sought to understand the dynamics of the league, as well as characterize the patients and their specific demands, through participant observation. The second stage was structured around the specific OT intervention; evaluations of league users were carried out, with the application of evaluation and recording instruments. The third stage focused on monitoring patients and families, with new assessments carried out when necessary. Interventions follows through individual plan care, family guidance, development of educational material, prescription and/or production of assistive technology devices. The service uses a specific evolution form and the data feeds into a service database. We consider that the results obtained are satisfactory, as theoretical and practical learning was possible for the participating student. Currently, Occupational Therapy is already part of the League's routine activities, with participation in the Introductory Course, in the Board of Directors and in planning activities for 2024.","PeriodicalId":426765,"journal":{"name":"Hospice & Palliative Medicine International Journal","volume":" 727","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141127555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, from the perspective of PC, the health professionals´ role is to promote the dignity of the human person. The concept of LTNC covers neurological diseases with a prognosis of long-time life with significant disabilities, end-of-life stage that is difficult to identify, with many symptoms and physical and cognitive impairments. In this paper, we considered the following situations: persistent vegetative state, minimal consciousness state and locked-in syndrome. This is a theoretical study of a qualitative nature, which aims to describe a new kind of PC practice with this population, based on first author PHD study. The concept of Comprehensive Care is the main theoretical framework for the paper. It is proposed a practice reconstruction based on the person´s biography occurs by several perspectives, especially through sensory stimuli related to prior patient´s occupational repertoire. Along with the detailed evaluation, the therapist does a careful and continuous monitoring, proposing activities, giving special attention to their reactions, being able to discriminate what pleases or not, and expanding the possibilities of encounter of people with LTNC and the environment which surround them. Therapist should also provide support and guidance to the family, which is in a vulnerable situation. Regardless of neurological reactions presented by the patients this practice helps reconstructing the meanings of the daily life of person with so severe disability. Sensory stimuli are shown as potential tools for a rehabilitation practice. Memory, history, identity, dignity, and subjectivity qualify the assistance for people with LTNC.","PeriodicalId":426765,"journal":{"name":"Hospice & Palliative Medicine International Journal","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127700382","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Adequate control of symptoms of a terminally ill patient is a challenging task for most end-of-life care professionals. The sole aim to provide comfort till the end of life with a holistic approach is necessary. In keeping with Liverpool Care Pathway as a guide, care of the terminally ill in their last days should be individualized from a more humanistic perspective. It should not be a ‘Tick Box Exercise’ and never a ‘One Size Fits All’ type. Once a ‘diagnosis of dying’ is made, spending on unnecessary medical interventions should be curtailed and natural death process should be allowed to continue. If available, it is always desirable to seek the opinion of specialist palliative care service team in the management of terminally ill patients. Shared decision making and open communications with all concerned are of paramount importance in end-of-life care. This mini review attempts to identify common physical symptoms and an appropriate intervention.","PeriodicalId":426765,"journal":{"name":"Hospice & Palliative Medicine International Journal","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126511478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
