I guess this means that most people at a funeral would rather be in the coffin than delivering the eulogy. Often in your career you will be faced with the prospect of \" giving a talk, \" that is, making an oral presentation before an audience. These notes are a collection of a few simple guidelines for preparing and delivering a \" talk. \" The basic principles are applicable in defence of your thesis, at conferences, in giving research progress reports and the like. These notes are intended to supplement—rather than replace—standard texts on public speaking and effective oral communication. The suggestions given here have worked well for the author and his friends; perhaps they will work well for you too! 2 The Basics Define your message. If you have nothing to say, you cannot give an effective talk. Assuming that you do have something to say, it is important to identify at the outset just what it is that you are trying to communicate. Write down a short list of important points that you want to make (no more than 3 or 4). These points are often called the \" takeaway message, \" that is, the message that the audience should be receiving if your presentation is to be effective. Your entire presentation should focus on presenting the takeaway message in a clear and convincing way. Guard against making your takeaway message overly complex, as this will only overwhelm the audience. Know your audience. To be effective, your talk must be delivered at a level that is appropriate for your audience. You must analyze the background and expectations of the audience to deliver the takeaway message in the most effective manner. This may mean modifying the takeaway message, if the concepts involved are beyond the level of your audience. Knowing your audience, you can begin to decide how much background material is needed to deliver your takeaway message effectively. Your audience will influence your choice of vocabulary (technical jargon) and may even influence how you dress! Prepare well. The best way to give the impression that you know what you are talking about, is really to know what you are talking about. This means that you should understand your subject well, and be able to answer related questions. I did not know that I was to chair a session until the day my team-mates and I arrived in Darwin and I read on the program that I was Chairman for the session on 'The Role and Future Training Needs of Aboriginal Health Workers,' the last session of the Conference. During the Conference, the various Chairpersons did such excellent jobs, making the task look so easy, that I did not feel at all nervous - until I finally had to stand up in front of the crowd to open the session.","PeriodicalId":426355,"journal":{"name":"Enjoy Your Science Meeting!","volume":"55 99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1979-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116077423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These review the cases for investment and improvement in all modes of transport. This extends to \"new modes\" such as Light Rail Transit systems. A common theme in these projects is the need to consult elected representatives, community leaders, interest groups and the general public at several stages and at different levels during the work. The various procedures which exist for consulting the public over planning and land use issues are not always suitable for the unique questions associated with urban transport. It has therefore been necessary to re-assess the methods which are employed to obtain the views and attitudes of the public towards the major transport proposals and strategies now under consideration in many cities. In conjunction with its clients, Steer Davies Gleave has initiated a range of new methods by which the public can be adequately consulted on urban transport issues, within realistic timescales and at reasonable cost. The paper presents a review of public consultation in urban transport planning together with description of the initiatives which have been taken to improve on existing procedures. The Greater Hull Transportation Study, commissioned by Humberside County Council is used as an example of the consultation issues facing local authorities in their major transportation studies, and the way in which these can be addressed. Other examples are drawn from work underway in Leeds and Cleveland.
