With billions of IoT devices expected to be connected by 2020, there are increasing concerns on how these devices will interconnect and inter-operate. Proprietary IoT solutions from different manufacturers understand different digital languages and communication procedures, therefore they do not easily inter-operate. With the availability of the NB-IoT and LTE-M protocols in the cellular system, ample opportunities exist for leveraging the cellular networks for IoT transport services. In this paper, methods to connect proprietary IoT systems to the cellular IoT infrastructure were explored. Using off-the-shelf wireless sensor nodes and cell modems, a temperature-monitoring IoT system where sensor data is transported from remote sites to an IoT data processing center located at the customer's premises using cellular network as the transport link was developed. Sensor data received over cellular links were then recorded and plotted for several days of temperature monitoring. Delay analyses for IoT data transmitted to the cell modem were then presented. Measurement and analytical data show that the average delay that a cell modem connection experiences goes up as the spectral efficiency (or data points transmitted per channel use) increase, and that higher delay is experienced for indoor use cases compared to the outdoor use cases. Also, cell modems that are far away from the base station generally experience longer delay compared to those that are closer to the base station, as would be expected.","PeriodicalId":426086,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Conference on Communications Workshops (ICC Workshops)","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122514998","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes a cooperative computation architecture that can handle the wireless big data applications by taking the advantages of WBANs and mobile edge computing (MEC). The access point (AP) in WBANs is integrated with remote radio head (RRH), which is capable of executing the high latency and low computation tasks, while MEC server can handle the low latency computation-intensive tasks. After introducing the proposed model, task classification, task offloading priority and AP offloading decision algorithms are given. Numerical results show that the proposed solution has significantly improved the network lifetime and the total number of successfully executed tasks, as compared with the existing relay-enabled task offloading scheme. Moreover, UEs with higher computation capacity promises a lower network average service latency.","PeriodicalId":426086,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Conference on Communications Workshops (ICC Workshops)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128319392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We describe in detail the corresponding artificial neural network architecture, the training process, and report on excessive over-the-air measurement results. We employ the end-to-end training approach with an autoencoder model that includes a channel model in the middle layers as previously proposed in the literature. In contrast to other state-of-the-art results, our architecture supports learning time synchronization without any manually designed signal processing operations. Moreover, the neural transceiver has been tested over the air with an implementation in software defined radio. Our experimental results for the implemented single antenna system demonstrate a raw bit-rate of 0.5 million bits per second. This exceeds results from comparable systems presented in the literature and suggests the feasibility of high throughput deep learning transceivers.","PeriodicalId":426086,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Conference on Communications Workshops (ICC Workshops)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129414765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Overall, this could lead to low Quality of Service (QoS) levels. To satisfy application requirements, i.e., reliability, it is mandatory to continuously monitor connectivity and properly managing disconnections, without causing signaling overhead. The optimization of the exchange of messages can be pursued thanks to dedicated communication slots, eventually rescheduled in cases of deletion, replacement or dynamic reassignments. This solution lowers energy consumption while accounting for a number of improvements in network operative conditions. In this work, network formation optimization mechanisms for IPv6 over the TSCH mode of IEEE 802.15.4 (6TiSCH) networks are analyzed in real use cases in which the number of nodes in the network varies over time. Once the network was fully connected, a performance analysis has been carried out in order to measure typical networks parameters, such as latencies and Packet Loss Ratio (PLR). The study has proven the effectiveness of dedicated slots dynamic assignment. In particular, it has been measured a sensible reduction of latencies and losses of information. The obtained results pave the way towards robotics-aided set up of Internet of Things (IoT) networks in industrial contexts.","PeriodicalId":426086,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Conference on Communications Workshops (ICC Workshops)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130264958","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We particularly focus on the case when the transmitter is equipped with nonlinear power amplifiers. Using Bussgang's theorem, we formulate a lower bound on the achievable sum rate in the presence of hardware impairments, and maximize it using projected gradient ascent. We provide numerical examples that demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed distortion-aware scheme for precoding over a millimeter-wave channel.","PeriodicalId":426086,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Conference on Communications Workshops (ICC Workshops)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127866460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To promote efficiency of content distribution and reduce network cost, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and content providers (CPs) are motivated to cooperatively work. As a clean-slate solution, nowadays Information-Centric Networking architectures have been proposed and widely researched, where the thought of in-network caching, especially edge caching, can be applied to mobile wireless networks to fundamentally address this problem. Considered the profit split issue between ISPs and CPs and the influence of content popularity is largely ignored, in this paper, we propose a Stackelberg-based optimal network profit split scheme for content delivery in information-centric wireless networks. Simulation results show that the performance of our proposed model is comparable to its centralized solution and obviously superior to current ISP-CP cooperative schemes without considering cache deployment in the network.","PeriodicalId":426086,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Conference on Communications Workshops (ICC Workshops)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131696154","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While content-delivery networks improve the effectiveness of fixed networks, caching at the edge of mobile networks is challenging due to heterogeneity in service and content usage patterns, and variations in user mobility patterns. To address this challenge, machine learning-based predictive analytics could be used to anticipate user behaviors and content request patterns, and pre-fetch content with high expected hit rates to wireless edge caches close to the users. Although recent research has shifted to focus on machine learning-based caching techniques, the optimal strategy and performance of predictive wireless edge caching have yet to be fully investigated. Here, we first develop a generic predictive algorithm to predict the daily trajectories and the service usage patterns of mobile users. We then investigate the critical factors that affects the users' prediction accuracy based on real network datasets. Next, we propose a new caching technique that utilizes our predictive algorithm to anticipate user requests, and we design a simulation to comprehensively generate the trajectories and service content requests of users in a mobile network. We then establish base cases to first show that the predictive caching strategy outperforms the non-predictive method.","PeriodicalId":426086,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Conference on Communications Workshops (ICC Workshops)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126576298","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes a fixed-wing UAV-enabled communication system to collect and forward data from one node to another node, between which the direct link is blocked. As fixed-wing UAV cannot hover steadily and turn around quickly, this paper proposes a running track (RT) trajectory model which consists of straight part and circular part. The objective is to minimize the UAV's propulsion energy consumption while satisfying the throughput requirement by optimizing the RT trajectory. A variable discretization method is used to transform the problem into a discretized equivalent. And then the problem is transformed into a convex optimization problem which can obtain a locally optimal solution by the successive convex approximation (SCA) method. Numerical results show that the proposed RT model can obtain the optimal trajectory to collect and forward the data efficiently with the less propulsion energy, compared to the approximate straight trajectory and circular trajectory.","PeriodicalId":426086,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Conference on Communications Workshops (ICC Workshops)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132676465","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Optical wireless communication (OWC) can provide the benefits of higher transmission data rate and bandwidth by using unlicensed bandwidth and light-weight transceivers having low power requirements. However, OWC suffers from many limitations such as absorption, scattering, and turbulence, which become harder when the channel includes a water-to-air (W2A) interface. In this paper, we focus on the modeling impulse response of a W2A-OWC channel under different turbulent water surface conditions. We empirically evaluate the statistical behavior of the channel and show fits to probabilistic distributions to understand the nature of the W2A-OWC channels.","PeriodicalId":426086,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Conference on Communications Workshops (ICC Workshops)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114945525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This identification is only possible if each electric appliance has an Electric Load Signature (ELS). The generation of ELS occurs through the Internet of Things (IoT) equipment, such as Smart Meter (SM) or Smart Plugs (SPs), which provides information necessary for this purpose. The proposed work allows the reading and detection of residential household appliances in the network, through the individual ELS of each load, using SPs together with the Machine Learning Algorithm. Some important electrical parameters will be analyzed and detected individually. With the aid of the Decision Tree and Naive Bayes algorithms, the creation data of each ELS is stored in a centralized database present in the Home Energy Management System and trained so that the identification in each SP is possible. A visual application is provided to the consumer at the HEM to be able to see which appliances are operating, consumption history, as well as anomalies and unwanted changes, present in the residential network.","PeriodicalId":426086,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Conference on Communications Workshops (ICC Workshops)","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116402578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
