It starts from the Humboldtian axiom “language is real only while speaking each time”, opposing this viewpoint to several theoretical positions in the 20th century; positions that have replaced the fact of considering human speech as something rigorously individual and historical by images of “language” reduced to systems and rules acting beyond individuals and investigated under scientistic methodologies. Contrary to “linguistic ideologies” which have become dominant she proposes to follow the Kantian commitment of studying the human being not in order to “describe”, but aiming that he should “make the best possible out of himself”. Thus she unites the criticism against the metaphysics underlying formal structuralisms with an ethics in accordance with Western humanism. She also underscores the importance of studying language from a historical and comparative perspective.\u0000\u0000\u0000
ENERGEIA. It is not easy to gain access to Coseriu’s epistemological stance since his opinions are scattered across many different works. For this reason my main purpose will be to introduce his position through a systematic comparison to the very similar scientific-philosophical assumptions which Itkonen has exhibited and defended in a more comprehensive and exhaustive way. In order to achieve a proper understanding of Coseriu’s and Itkonen’s epistemological convictions, it will be previously necessary to define the domains of philosophy of science and philosophy of linguistics and to characterize the two divergent streams we find inside this metatheoretical domain of research. Subsequently, from the hermeneutic or phenomenological point of view shared by Coseriu and Itkonen, I will discuss what kind of (scientific) explanation is to be expected from human sciences, and I will consider the relationship between the subject and the object of research that exists in this kind of sciences. Conclusively, I will also examine to what extent for both Coseriu and Itkonen this relationship determines the specific epistemic act we make use of in disciplines such as linguistics (namely, intuition), and also the necessity to differentiate them from natural sciences, where observation prevails.
ENERGEIA. Logos apophantikós manifests in the three levels as well: it is universal since logic manifests as different from linguistic, since it is knowledge and since objective classifications of reality do not belong to language: they are not lexical systematizations; it is the historical since reality and knowledge of reality impose on intuition and meaning; and it is individual since it appears in those particular texts in which reality is predicated.\u0000My intention in this article is to analyze logos as it manifests in the act of speech
ENERGEIA. The distinction between definition and description is fundamental for linguists, but not everyone takes it into consideration. Descriptive grammar must not study the universal definition of concepts, but it needs to use them as previous base to identify correctly its extension and to describe the characteristics of the respective elements in several languages.\u0000Based on the problem of a clear concept called ‘purpose’ in linguistic studies, we intend to suggest the following: on one hand, we intend to demonstrate a series of basic guidelines to study ‘purpose’ as linguistic universal; on the other hand, we try to apply them to the elements that belong to it in a specific language, in this case, spanish language.
ENERGEIA. This is a key aspect for understanding not only the general meaning of Hermeneutics, but also the particular relevance of the concept in the author’s practical philosophy. Ricoeur developed his theory of Discourse after introducing a semiologic turn to his Phenomenological work. Discourse is not reduced to immediate (dialogical) communication, even though it begins with it. Taken as a principle of discursive historicity, text plays a major role in the constitution of this theory – it is considered as a model for detachment in communication. Ricoeur distinguishes different levels of meaning (word, sentence, text, culture) and separates three discursive dimensions, irreducible to one another: Rhetorics, Poetics and Hermeneutics. At this point, the article should explain the role of Hermeneutics, particularly when compared to the other two disciplines. The article will conclude by underlining the role of Reflexivity and the analogical unity of Discursivity.
ENERGEIA.
