We cast the problem in an estimation theoretic framework and base the comparison on two visualization parameters, the polarization magnitude and the degree of polarization. We show that PDI is superior in estimating these two parameters in active imaging. However, we show that PMI is suitable for passive imaging and that the PDI is a specific implementation of PMI.","PeriodicalId":424981,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Conference on Signal Processing and Communications, 2004. The approach we present in this paper is based on the direct segmentation and topography analysis of a topographic scene using a sequence of images obtained by varying the illumination parameters in a pre-selected format. Thereby a correlation of the grey level variations of the individual pixels with the variations of the illumination parameters is employed to achieve superior segmentation and topographical information. An advantage is that the pipeline of separate operations viz. image fusion, segmentation topographical analysis is reduced to just one direct operation. The method has been successfully applied to determine the topography of grinding surfaces in machining in manufacturing processes.","PeriodicalId":424981,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Conference on Signal Processing and Communications, 2004. It has been observed that the algorithms designed for Gaussian noise typically perform poor in presence of non-Gaussian noise. This paper discusses an error entropy minimization algorithm using kernel density estimates to improve channel estimation in non-Gaussian noise environment. Entropy is a measure of average information contained in a given probability density function. This probability density is assumed unknown and is estimated by using kernel density estimator. Thereby combining entropy cost function with kernel density estimate provides a robust channel estimator in presence of co-channel interference. New lower bounds for co-channel interference effected channel in presence of Gaussian noise are presented as a measure of performance. The simulations for channel estimator in co-channel interference plus Gaussian noise effected channel confirms that a better estimate can be obtained by using the proposed technique as compared to the traditional least squares algorithm, which is considered optimal in the Gaussian noise environments.","PeriodicalId":424981,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Conference on Signal Processing and Communications, 2004. In these limited number of MIPS, we want to achieve the maximum possible frame rate, while maintaining the PSNR of the encoded video. There are several parts of the video encoding process that can be optimized for high quality, high compression ratio and fast encoding speed. We study motion estimation, which is the most computationally intensive part of encoding. We study a novel criterion, the mean removed MAD (MR-MAD) for block matching, which is an improvement over the mean of absolute differences, MAD. We then incorporate MR-MAD into our criterion for decision between coded/non-coded blocks and propose an efficient algorithm that performs well in terms of speed with a small cost in quality and the bit rate for different kinds of motion sequences. We have implemented these optimizations in a MPEG-4 framework and the results are encouraging.","PeriodicalId":424981,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Conference on Signal Processing and Communications, 2004. Detection of these beats are important are they could be pre-cursor for serious arrhythmias. Common detection methods of these beats use only ECG signals. However, the stroke volume changes after the occurrence of these beats, which results in blood pressure variations. Following this fact, we combined features extracted from QRS complex of ECG signal Lead I with systolic and diastolic arterial blood pressure values to classify normal, PSC and PVC beats. Data from 5 subjects totaling 750 beats (250 normal, 250 PSC and 250 PVC) from Massachusetts General Hospital/Marquette Foundation (MGH/MF) database were used. The data were split equally for multilayer perceptron-backpropagation (MLP-BP) neural network training and testing. The combined features were classified by the MLP-BP neural network into the 3 classes. The features were normalized using some parameter inherent in the signals. This was to normalize the features across different subjects. The results gave classification performance up to 92.00%. It is concluded that ECG and blood pressure features could detect PSC and PVC.","PeriodicalId":424981,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Conference on Signal Processing and Communications, 2004. The algorithm estimates the likelihood of the sample under inspection is corrupt relative to the neighboring samples and replaces a sample detected as corrupted by a value based on the neighboring samples. In the proposed algorithm there is no need to preset a threshold value to detect the averaged-impulse-noise. The algorithm has the advantage of being configurable to the type of noise impulses in the sample, as the threshold used to detect noise impulse varies to suit the signal.","PeriodicalId":424981,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Conference on Signal Processing and Communications, 2004. The algorithm uses both DCT and DWT to exploit the temporal and spatial redundancies present in the video. A new tree structure has been devised. Performance comparisons of this coder is made with existing 3D wavelet coder using 3D-SPIHT algorithm. Results obtained are comparable to the existing coder. No motion compensation is used. This coder also has the interesting feature of scalability (spatial and SNR) without which its difficult to sustain in the world of Internet and mobile communication. Packetisation is carried out using packetized zero tree wavelet (PZW) using the proposed new tree structure which is resilient to packet erasures.","PeriodicalId":424981,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Conference on Signal Processing and Communications, 2004. This algorithm, however, has exponential complexity that makes it unsuitable for use in channels with large delay spreads as is typical in wireless MAN scenarios. Here, we propose an alternative to the basic Viterbi decoding algorithm that takes into account the nature of the channel. The type of channel used in simulations is based on the Stanford University Interim (SUI) model. The modified Viterbi algorithm constitutes estimating the channel response using a Wiener filter and using the tap delays to fix the trellis states to be used, the actual modified Viterbi decoder and a decision feedback element. The entire scheme matches various design criteria and produces reasonably good results.","PeriodicalId":424981,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Conference on Signal Processing and Communications, 2004. The channel state is not known to the transmitter and the receiver. The receiver estimates the channel via a training sequence or uses blind methods to separate the signals. By comparing the 'capacity' of a composite channel, we find the optimal training size in training and semiblind methods. We also conclude that for Rician channels (with strong line of sight, LOS) (semi)blind algorithms outperform training based methods but for Rayleigh fading one should used training based methods only.","PeriodicalId":424981,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Conference on Signal Processing and Communications, 2004. The subspace method is used to determine decorrelating filter required for the mitigation of multi-user interference and to coherently combine multi-path signals. We show that this subspace method for STBC could however solve this problem only up to a matrix ambiguity and this matrix in structure looks like a channel matrix obtained for a single user STBC system with frequency non-selective channel. Hence the remaining problem has been shown to be equivalent to blind equalization of single user STBC in flat fading channel, and we propose a tap constrained constant modulus algorithm to solve this. Simulation result shows superior performance of the proposed method over a conventional matched filter.","PeriodicalId":424981,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Conference on Signal Processing and Communications, 2004.
