All of these transforms are based on tree-structured filter banks. Through the analysis of lossy and lossless compression results, a reversible version of the Cohen-Daubechies-Feauveau (2, 2) wavelet transform is found to perform best overall. A reversible version of a subband transform developed by Balasingham and Ramstad (see Proc. of 31st Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems, and Computers, Monterey, CA, USA, 1997.) is also found to work particularly well for textured images.","PeriodicalId":424855,"journal":{"name":"1998 IEEE Symposium on Advances in Digital Filtering and Signal Processing. The availability of a wide set of multichannel information sources in application areas, such as color image processing, multispectral remote sensing imagery, biomedicine, robotics and industrial inspection have stimulated a renewed interest in developing efficient and cost effective processing techniques for multichannel signals. In this paper, fuzzy logic and adaptive learning techniques are utilized to derive new filter classes for multichannel signal processing. Using the proposed methodology, multichannel nonlinear problems are treated from a global viewpoint that readily yields and unifies previous, seemingly unrelated results. The fuzzy approach provides insight into the nature of the filtering process and the structure of the underlying nonlinear operator. The special case of color image processing is studied as an important example of multichannel signal processing. Simulation results indicate that the proposed adaptive fuzzy filters are computationally attractive and have excellent performance.","PeriodicalId":424855,"journal":{"name":"1998 IEEE Symposium on Advances in Digital Filtering and Signal Processing. Both multi-layered perceptron networks and radial basis function networks were trained to estimate ocean bottom parameters from a received acoustic signal. The network's design algorithms are presented and their relative merits discussed. The pre-processing of the data is described in detail. A comparison of the relative accuracies of the two networks for simulated data is presented. The inversion of actual data from the TRIAL SABLE experiment was performed and the parameter estimates are given.","PeriodicalId":424855,"journal":{"name":"1998 IEEE Symposium on Advances in Digital Filtering and Signal Processing. A blind adaptive multiuser detector, which can suppress multiple-access interference and achieve multipath diversity gain simultaneously, is then proposed. A channel estimator (carrier recovery) for a coherent diversity combining is also presented. The only information required by the proposed detector is the signature and timing of the user of interest. It is shown that the proposed detector outperforms the decorrelating solution and is comparable to the minimum mean-squared-error solution even though the later two require more information.","PeriodicalId":424855,"journal":{"name":"1998 IEEE Symposium on Advances in Digital Filtering and Signal Processing. A technique is developed for obtaining the optimal error feedback (EFB) coefficients that minimize the noise variance at the filter output. A detail discussion on the use of symmetry and antisymmetry of the EFB coefficients is also presented. The proposed technique relies on the use of the Lagrange's multiplier method. Moreover, the suboptimal EFB with integer coefficients is constructed by using a least-squares discrete-space optimization algorithm. Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the utility of the proposed technique.","PeriodicalId":424855,"journal":{"name":"1998 IEEE Symposium on Advances in Digital Filtering and Signal Processing. The proposed technique employs the HSV (hue, saturation, value) color space to partition a video-phone type sequence into a facial area and a set of arbitrarily shaped regions. The facial region is identified by utilizing the a priori knowledge of the skin-tone distributions along with a series of fuzzy shape-based membership functions. The remaining regions are segmented using a recursive 1D histogram thresholding procedure. The technique is robust, computationally inexpensive, and allows for a higher coding efficiency. Furthermore, it may be used to support the content-based functionalities addressed in future object-based coders.","PeriodicalId":424855,"journal":{"name":"1998 IEEE Symposium on Advances in Digital Filtering and Signal Processing. The coding scheme works by dividing an image into range blocks that are approximated, through a contractive fractal transformation, by lowpass filtered versions of the domain blocks selected in the image itself. It is reported by Fisher (1994) that using eventually contractive fractal transformations one can improve the compressed image quality. However, no explanation is given to justify this fact. We address this issue by relating this improvement to the filtering process of the domain blocks.","PeriodicalId":424855,"journal":{"name":"1998 IEEE Symposium on Advances in Digital Filtering and Signal Processing. Cost may be measured in terms of processing time or computing requirements. It is well known that to gain a better approximation of a process, the adaptation should be able to model a non-linearity at a desirable precision. Currently, methods that do so achieve their accuracy at a high computational cost. Furthermore, these methods do not guarantee i) optimal solution (neural networks), ii) convergence (extended Kalman filtering), or iii) manageable cost (Volterra systems). In this paper, we offer a simple yet powerful method, a switched filter bank, to this end.","PeriodicalId":424855,"journal":{"name":"1998 IEEE Symposium on Advances in Digital Filtering and Signal Processing. A new iterative procedure is developed for the inversion of the matrices involved in the design. By expanding the inverse of a matrix as a convergent series, an updating formula for evaluating the inverse for each iteration is obtained, so that the proposed algorithm requires an inverse for only a few initial iterations but does not need any numerical operations for matrix inversion in succeeding iterations. It is also shown that the proposed iterative procedure is applicable for a wide range of weighting functions used for least-square designs.","PeriodicalId":424855,"journal":{"name":"1998 IEEE Symposium on Advances in Digital Filtering and Signal Processing.
