Based on this method, a diffraction-limited collimator is designed. The design is very stable against wavelength change, as expected. The proposed planar nano-diffraction grating consists of nonuniform periods, to focus the reflected beams from the grating’s surface, and an asymmetrical V-shaped groove profile, to provide uniform diffraction efficiency in the wavelength range from 400 to 650 nm. Also, to fabricate the nano-diffraction grating using low-cost UV-NIL technology, we analyzed the FT-IR spectrum of a uv-curable resin and optimized the conditions for the UV curing process. Then, we precisely fabricated the polymeric nano-diffraction grating within 5 nm in dimensional accuracy. The integrated spectrometer module using the fabricated polymeric planar nano-diffraction grating provides spectral resolution of 5 nm and spectral bandwidth of 250 nm. The cavity of the NIR swept laser source consists of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) with a gain region around 800 nm, and several fiber-optic components. To change the output wavelength in time using an applied electric radio-frequency signal, an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) is introduced in the fiber ring cavity configuration. A cost-effective inspection system can be realized with the proposed method, because it does not require a high-magnification microscope. Also, the proposed method can avoid tight tolerance for variations in displacement between substrate and camera, which is stems from shallow depth of field of the high-magnification microscope. In addition, possible damage caused by collisions between substrate and the inspection equipment can be avoided. The decision algorithm can be simpler than for a conventional inspection system, because spatial shift of periodic substrate patterns does not affect the intensity distribution of the diffracted light, by the Fourier transform property. In this study, the exposure-limit distance (ELD), indicating the minimal safe distance in case of seeing by chance a high-intensity flash, is proposed. The optical procedures to determine the ELD of a high-intensity flash are clarified, and the dependence of ELD on its parameters such as luminous intensity, duration, and radius of a flash are thoroughly investigated. From this investigation it is obvious that, while being weakly dependent on duration, the ELD is nearly proportional to the luminous intensity and the radius of a flash. The proposed ELD as an intuitive safety-indicating parameter is more useful and intuitive than the other characteristic parameters of a high-intensity flash. The [2Fe-2S] cluster-containing transcription factor SoxR is particularly tuned to protect cells against redox-active compounds (RACs). In enteric bacteria, SoxR is paired with a second transcription factor, SoxS, that activates downstream effectors. However, SoxS is absent in non-enteric bacteria, raising questions as to how SoxR functions. Here, we first show that SoxR of Acinetobacter oleivorans displayed similar activation profiles in response to RACs as did its homolog from Escherichia coli but controlled a different set of target genes, including sinE, which encodes an endoribonuclease. Expression, gel mobility shift, and mutational analyses indicated that sinE is a direct target of SoxR. Redox potentials and permeability of RACs determined optimal sinE induction. Bioinformatics suggested that only a few γ- and β-proteobacteria might have SoxR-regulated sinE Purified SinE, in the presence of Mg<sup>2+</sup> ions, degrades rRNAs, thus inhibiting protein synthesis. Similarly, pretreatment of cells with RACs demonstrated a role for SinE in promoting persistence in the presence of antibiotics that inhibit protein synthesis. The interferometer consists of a body 165 mm × 120 mm × 57 mm in size, mirror mounts, a laser holder, beam splitters, and so on. The laser path is adjusted by 4 mirror mounts, each comprised of rubber bands, small metal wires, and a screw. The interference fringe is enlarged by the lens at the final stage. The refractive index of a slide glass was measured by counting the number of moving interference fringes while the slide glass, inserted into one of the two interferometer arms, is rotating. The formula for the refractive index as a function of the optical-path difference and rotation angle was obtained, and used to calculate the refractive index of glass from the interferometer experiment. The use of a rotating glass in one arm of the interferometer nullifies the need for a precision stage, which despite its high cost is often required to observe the moving interference fringe in the classroom. Therefore, the 3D-printed Mach-Zehnder interferometer proposed in this paper can be very useful for education, because of its affordability and performance.
