Based on audio-recordings, we analyse the contributions of judgeand interpreter, and we focus on if, how and by whom the non-Danish speakingaccused is informed about the possibility to speak with a lawyer in private.Although legally trivial, this information is crucial to the accused as it concernshis/her legal rights and options. We show how the informational sequenceunfolds interactionally; we argue that the work of judge and interpreter iscollaborative; and we discuss the potential of our sociolinguistic / interactionalperspectives to inform the legal professionals. Here we are concerned witha wide-spread understanding of quality in legal interpreting. Rather thanregarding ‘quality’ as equal to ‘correct’ and ‘accurate’ translation and focusingon the work of the interpreter in isolation, we suggest that it is necessary toconsider context, aims, addressees and functions of the interpreting activity. Thisaudience consists of judges charged with taking procedural decisions based,among other things, on their reception of these written records. Qualitativestudies have revealed that interviewers use confrontational questions tocommunicate their doubt regarding the interviewee’s credibility to the audience,and that they formulate the questions in the written record more confrontationallythan in the actual interview for the same reason. However, so far, insufficientknowledge exists about the intended effect: Is the audience receptive to thepolice officer’s doubt when reading the written record? This research draws on authenticdata from interviews with 17- and 18-year-old suspects from two English policeforces, analysing how the cautioning exchanges are negotiated while consideringsuspects’ ages and legal statuses as children and adults, respectively. Taking aninductive approach rooted in conversation analysis, the findings reveal an overalltendency for interviewers to explain the caution directly after reciting it, therebyacting on a presumption of suspects’ non-comprehension. It is also consideredhow the (discursive) presence of appropriate adults in interviews with juvenilescan complicate the interactions. The study sheds light on the experiences of anunder-researched group of interviewees and discusses the implications of thesefindings on police practice and vulnerable persons’ access to justice.","PeriodicalId":42404,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Llengua i Dret-Journal of Language and Law","volume":"133 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136303282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the field of the civil service, the High Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJCV) ruled on the need to speak Valencian as a requirement for certain jobs reserved for civil servants of the local administration with national qualification. On the other hand, there are three decrees on the change of the name of a municipality exclusively in Valencian, and very specifically the change of name of Villanueva de Castellon to the exclusive form in Valencian \"Castello\" has been object of disagreement on the part of the municipality of Castello de la Plana, capital of the province of Castellon. There are also some normative developments in the organisational field, with the approval of a new Organic and Functional Regulation of the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sport. Likewise, modifications have been introduced in the composition of the Valencian Language Academy (AVL), in compliance with Law 12/2017, amending the laws regulating the institutions of the Generalitat to guarantee equality between women and men in its bodies. Finally, we mention promotion activity, which includes not only training actions for the promotion of Valencian and subsidies for the promotion of Valencian, but also the signing of a general collaboration protocol for an inclusive and unitary legislation.","PeriodicalId":42404,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Llengua i Dret-Journal of Language and Law","volume":"1 1","pages":"131-136"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68931858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This holds true especially with regard to languages for specific purposes, including legal and institutional language. The use of foreign words by Swiss public authorities has raised political concern in recent years, and action has been taken to contain the spread of this trend. Although some papers have already tackled this question, none of them adopt an empirical perspective. This corpus-based study sets out to investigate the use of anglicisms in Swiss legal Italian from the 70s to the present day. A twofold quantitative and qualitative analysis will shed light on the extent and microdiachronic evolution of this phenomenon and attempt a description of its features. The results are encouraging; even though the number of anglicisms has increased over the last few decades, Swiss federal legislation makes scarce use of foreign words. All in all, anglicisms do not seem to constitute a major barrier to an accessible legislation, at least in Switzerland.","PeriodicalId":42404,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Llengua i Dret-Journal of Language and Law","volume":"74 1","pages":"18-37"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68931867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
