For successful incorporation in future wireless networks it is necessary to understand their efficiency, which depends on several parameters, such as the RIS distance and orientation relative to the transmitter and receiver, and size relative to the incident beam extent. In this work the efficiency of the RIS is studied in terms of the received power. Through simulations it is demonstrated how the RIS efficiency depends on the orientation of the RIS with respect to the transmitter and receiver, and also on the relative size of the RIS with respect to the footprint of the incident beam. The findings are quantified via a metric that expresses the percentage of the region within which a minimum received power is guaranteed, thus serving as a practical means for assessing the RIS efficiency particularly in mobile user environments.","PeriodicalId":423807,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 23rd International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communication (SPAWC)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125865723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We explore the secure multi-antenna coded caching scheme in a centralized manner. Our goal is to prevent an eavesdropper who sniffs the packets in the delivery phase from obtaining any information about the original files. We analyze the system’s performance in terms of Coding Delay and guarantee the security using the Mutual Information metric. The numerical evaluations show that security leads to a negligible cost in terms of memory by scaling up the files and users and it does not impose extra computational complexity on the network. Finally, we present some numerical evaluations to investigate the scheme.","PeriodicalId":423807,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 23rd International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communication (SPAWC)","volume":"20 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114033225","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When operating in dynamic settings, the environment may only be partially observed. This paper introduces a method to extract statistical channel models, given partial observations of the surrounding environment. We propose a simple heuristic algorithm that performs ray tracing on the partial environment and then uses machine-learning trained predictors to estimate the channel and its uncertainty from features extracted from the partial ray tracing results. It is shown that the proposed method can interpolate between fully statistical models when no partial information is available and fully deterministic models when the environment is completely observed. The method can also capture the degree of uncertainty of the propagation predictions depending on the amount of region that has been explored. The methodology is demonstrated in a robotic navigation application simulated on a set of indoor maps with detailed models constructed using state-of-the-art navigation, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), and computer vision methods.","PeriodicalId":423807,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 23rd International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communication (SPAWC)","volume":"637 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131734528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We focus our attention on the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel, and we introduce an algorithm for jointly optimizing the covariance matrix at the base station, the matrix of reflection and transmission coefficients at the IOS, and the amount of power that is reflected and refracted from the IOS. The distinguishable feature of this work lies in taking into account that the reflection and transmission coefficients of an IOS are tightly coupled. Simulation results are illustrated to show the convergence of the proposed algorithm and the benefits of using surfaces with simultaneous reflection and refraction capabilities.","PeriodicalId":423807,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 23rd International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communication (SPAWC)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125742518","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our framework determines (sub)sets of UEs that should transmit simultaneously in a given time slot by approximately solving a nonconvex optimization problem using forward-backward splitting. Our UE scheduling framework is flexible in the sense that it (i) supports a variety of cost functions, including post-equalization mean square error and sum rate, and (ii) enables precise control over the minimum and maximum number of resources the UEs should occupy. We demonstrate the efficacy of our framework using realistic mmWave channel vectors generated with a commercial ray-tracer. We show that our UE scheduler outperforms a range of existing scheduling methods and closely approaches the performance of an exhaustive search.","PeriodicalId":423807,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 23rd International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communication (SPAWC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130746237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since, in static environments, CSI is a function of the transmitter location, a mapping from CSI to channel chart coordinates can be learned in a self-supervised manner using dimensionality reduction techniques. The state-of-the-art triplet-based approach is evaluated on multiple datasets measured by a distributed massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel sounder, with both co-located and distributed antenna setups. The importance of suitable triplet selection is investigated by comparing results to channel charts learned from a genie-aided triplet generator and learned from triplets on simulated trajectories through measured data. Finally, the transferability of learned forward charting functions to similar, but different radio environments is explored.","PeriodicalId":423807,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 23rd International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communication (SPAWC)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127728675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each generation of networks from the 2nd to the 5th has reached higher QoS targets and coverage area sizes. However, the deployment of new networks is sometimes challenged by Electromagnetic Field (EMF) exposure constraints. In this paper, to take into account these constraints, we assess the novel and recent concept of \"Reduced EMF Exposure Area\". Such an area would be created and operated by a mobile network operator upon the request of its customers. In such an area, customers keep enjoying high data rate internet access while getting a reduced EMF exposure. To ensure this EMF exposure reduction, we propose to deploy Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) connected to the mobile network and exploit a joint RIS-M-MIMO uplink beamforming scheme. We use our ray-tracing-based simulation tool to visualize and characterize the Reduced EMF Exposure Area in a challenging environment in terms of propagation. Our simulations show that an operator can create and operate such an area under the condition that it carefully places the RIS in the environment.","PeriodicalId":423807,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 23rd International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communication (SPAWC)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132681946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Classical model-based solutions rely on comparing likelihoods. These are sensitive to imperfect models and are often computationally expensive. In contrast, data-driven machine learning is often more robust and yields classifiers with fixed computational complexity. Learned detectors usually provide high accuracy with low complexity but do not have a constant false alarm rate (CFAR) as required in many applications. To close this gap, we propose to add a term to the loss function that promotes similar distributions of the detector under any null hypothesis scenario. Experiments show that our approach leads to near CFAR detectors with similar accuracy as their competitors.","PeriodicalId":423807,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 23rd International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communication (SPAWC)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132638264","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Contrary to conventional applications, wherein at least the radar waveform and communications channel are known or estimated a priori, we investigate the case when the channels and transmit signals of both systems are unknown. In radar applications, this problem arises in multistatic or passive systems, where transmit signal is not known. Similarly, highly dynamic vehicular or mobile communications may render prior estimates of wireless channel unhelpful. In particular, the radar signal reflected-off multiple targets is overlaid with the multi-carrier communications signal. In order to extract the unknown continuous-valued target parameters (range, Doppler velocity, and direction-of-arrival) and communications messages, we formulate the problem as a sparse dual-blind deconvolution and solve it using atomic norm minimization. Numerical experiments validate our proposed approach and show that precise estimation of continuous-valued channel parameters, radar waveform, and communications messages is possible up to scaling ambiguities.","PeriodicalId":423807,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 23rd International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communication (SPAWC)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134155336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the limited uplink (UL) pilot dimension, multiuser interference in the UL pilot transmission phase makes channel estimation a non-trivial problem. We make use of two types of UL pilot signals, sounding reference signal (SRS) and demodulation reference signal (DMRS) pilots, for the estimation of the channel subspace and its instantaneous realization, respectively. The SRS pilots are transmitted over multiple time slots and resource blocks according to a Latin squares based hopping scheme, which aims at averaging out the interference of different SRS co-pilot users. We propose a robust principle component analysis approach for channel subspace estimation from the SRS signal samples, employed at the RUs for each associated user. The estimated subspace is further used at the RUs for DMRS pilot decontamination and instantaneous channel estimation. We provide numerical simulations to compare the system performance using our subspace and channel estimation scheme with the cases of ideal partial subspace/channel knowledge and pilot matching channel estimation. The results show that a system with a properly designed SRS pilot hopping scheme can closely approximate the performance of a genie-aided system.","PeriodicalId":423807,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 23rd International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communication (SPAWC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130320459","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
