This essay reads the ‘The Victory of Indra’ as a rhetorical device that introduces a correlation between a sovereign’s bigness and brilliance—key metrics of Vedic sovereignty—and his buddhi. Through the practice of sensory restraint and (or as a kind of) brahmacarya, the Udyoga’s sovereign swells his buddhi to a point of identification with the comprehensive greatness of his realm. He further wards off mental/consumptive afflictions like distraction, lust, or pride, sustaining his rule through the vigilant observance of a brahman-centred habit. As a result, his buddhi is like a well-fed fire whose light comprehends the realm that he thereby rules with the clear understanding of the stable, expansive, and dharma-aligned force of brahman.","PeriodicalId":42357,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Hindu Studies","volume":"13 1","pages":"347-369"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-04-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1093/jhs/hiaa012","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48758587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through such inquiry, we see an ambivalent attitude towards the category mind, on the one hand, being a cause of bondage, while, on the other, being elevated to the highest ontological category. Such an examination raises interesting historical questions about influences on the Śaiva and Śaiva-Śākta material and interesting philosophical questions about the category mind in relation to the category of the person.","PeriodicalId":42357,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Hindu Studies","volume":"13 1","pages":"262-293"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-04-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44000039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Pāṇḍavas and the Kauravas employ diverging lines of subtle Dharmaśāstric reasoning in mutual attempts to entrap one another. This dangerous game of juridical brinksmanship, with Dharma as the stake, results in a decisive moral and legal victory for Yudhiṣṭhira—despite his losing the formal game of dice. Consequently, recent literary analyses of this scene emphasizing Dharma’s fundamental opacity are problematized by encouraging a scholarly focus on legal subtlety and strategy.","PeriodicalId":42357,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Hindu Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49627397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
