Three hundred and eighty-four of the women’s outgoing letters have been identified, and included in that number are twenty-five different female correspondents spanning three generations. These multi-voiced letters are defined and connected by gender, language and family, and my article shows how those three elements have shaped my editorial policy. I will discuss how the processes of retrieval, transcription and annotation have been adapted to accommodate and retain those features of the letters which are commonly shared but also distinct to the individual writer. Reflecting on past conventions and earlier editions of women’s letters, I will challenge some misconceptions about female illiteracy, demonstrating how a transcription policy can enable accessibility while also offering alternative strategies for reading and interpreting these female-voiced texts. This article suggests ways to annotate the localised spelling of placenames and secret forms of writing and, in doing so, preserving some of the hidden resonances of the letters and what they might more broadly signify about the lives, relationships and attitudes of this family of women over the course of a century.","PeriodicalId":42325,"journal":{"name":"Womens Writing","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135902670","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This “devolutionary” approach has had some success in shaping our understanding of the history and culture of early modern Ireland; in this article, I consider its impact on scholarly editing. I suggest that the “expansive, multilevelled, discontinuous, and polycentric” approach described by Kerrigan is particularly valuable for editing collections of letters. I draw upon my experience of editing the more than three hundred surviving letters of Elizabeth Butler, née Preston, Baroness Dingwall and first Duchess of Ormonde to outline what a “devolutionary” editorial practice involves and what insights it brings. I show how a “polycentric” approach influenced all aspects of my own editorial work, from the selection and arrangement of letters, the transcription policy, the presentation of headnotes, the content of annotations, the Introduction, illustrations, and editorial apparatus such as family trees and lists of persons and places. Ultimately, I suggest that editing early modern women’s letters from Ireland and elsewhere is not only uniquely suited to but demands a “devolutionary” approach.","PeriodicalId":42325,"journal":{"name":"Womens Writing","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135902681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Elizabeth Montagu was one of the most prominent and well-connected women in eighteenth-century polite society. EMCO faces a variety of challenges. Firstly, the project aims to trace all extant letters in different libraries and public/private collections; secondly, it seeks to amalgamate the extant correspondence into one digital repository and a comprehensive inventory; thirdly, it mobilises a team of scholars to transcribe, annotate and develop a critical apparatus; fourthly, EMCO seeks to develop digital tools that foster novel methods of scholarly research and debate. Taking recent scholarship on board, this article concludes by reflecting on the complexities of marrying a data-rich digital edition with literary methodologies that allow both close reading and analysis of the scope and materiality of the archive and its objects.","PeriodicalId":42325,"journal":{"name":"Womens Writing","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135902668","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
