The campaign was conducted through reports and correspondence in the liberal newspaper, the Liverpool Mercury, which itself supported the campaign. Drawing on recent critical work relating to the recovery of women’s writing, nineteenth-century understandings of celebrity and fame, and the high-Romantic idea that true literary success is posthumous, the essay analyses the representation of Hemans and her work in this public correspondence, and its engagement with Hemans’s international fame and literary achievements. The essay argues that concepts of celebrity (as opposed to literary fame) were used to devalue the work of women poets, particularly those who benefitted from contemporary innovations in print culture, and the exponential expansion of print markets in the Victorian era, and that the treatment of Hemans in this campaign offers insights into the erasure of women from the twentieth-century canon.","PeriodicalId":42325,"journal":{"name":"Womens Writing","volume":"29 1","pages":"448 - 465"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-05-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42006681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This essay evaluates Oliphant’s contribution to the genre of the supernatural short story, focusing on the ten supernatural tales she published in the conservative Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine between 1857 and 1897. Oliphant’s stories of the seen and the unseen occupy an uneasy ideological space between the commercial, the pious and the subversive and unusually seek to establish a continuum between this life and the next. This ambivalence is represented spatially in the stories’ persistent preoccupation with thresholds and journeys, which Oliphant uses to suggest the liminal encounters between the living and the dead and the passage from life to death but also to explore questions of gender, religion and modernity. Drawing on a critical framework provided by the spatial humanities, I read the stories’ overlapping spatialities – generic, periodical, gendered, spiritual – as indicative of the opportunities, constraints and strategies encountered by a professional female author publishing in the ideologically charged space of the periodical press during the seminal period of transition from the Victorian to the modernist.","PeriodicalId":42325,"journal":{"name":"Womens Writing","volume":"29 1","pages":"216 - 237"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44101665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The stories all feature familiar New England settings, but they also contain numerous Gothic, ghostly elements. In her supernatural stories, Freeman focuses on women in uncertain societal positions – spinsters, orphans and widows – and complicates and interrogates both the domestic sphere and women's place within it. Simultaneously, spiritualism was wildly popular throughout the USA during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The summoning of spirits was an egalitarian practice, with women often functioning as the mouthpiece for the “spirits”. The ghosts in Freeman's stories also serve the function of focusing attention on women side–lined by society and giving a voice to the voiceless (especially neglected children). This article will examine the role of ghosts and the supernatural in relation to women in Freeman's stories, and how the feminine connection with the spirit world serves the same function as spiritualism in giving a voice to women and the dead. The article will pose the question: do Freeman's stories empower women, give them a voice, merely reinforce gender roles or some amalgamation of all three?","PeriodicalId":42325,"journal":{"name":"Womens Writing","volume":"29 1","pages":"238 - 256"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48685195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite writing within a genre popular in the 1890s, little is known of her biography, her literary circle or her influences. Like other 1890s writers, Galbraith capitalised on public fascination with the tropes of crime narratives – the foggy London streets, the sensational newspaper snippets, violence and suppressed scandal – as well as the fascination with hypnotism and the occult revival. In the stories “In the Séance Room” and “The Missing Model” (1893) the wronged woman, abandoned, mistreated and objectified, returns as a terrifying spirit, who manifests in disturbing form to shame professional men. The séance room and the art gallery admit the excluded woman who silently petitions for her lost story to be told: the ghostly women have “magnetic” stares, subverting power relations in contemporary discourses of hypnotism. In “The Blue Room” (1897) women’s attempts to summon a demon have dangerous consequences and are seen as “meddling with sorcery”. Borrowing from the crime narrative with its mysteries, clues, detection and fake identities, Galbraith refashions the Victorian ghost story to hold men accountable for their deception and violence and addresses fears about black magic and hypnotism.","PeriodicalId":42325,"journal":{"name":"Womens Writing","volume":"29 1","pages":"177 - 195"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42139165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In her second collection of haunted narratives, More Tales of The Uneasy (1925), Hunt explores the ghostliness of the Great War, both for those on the front and at home. In this essay, we focus on the third story in this volume, “Love’s Last Leave”, and argue that Hunt includes both ghost story tropes and communications media to articulate the real deadliness of the Great War. Communications technology and spiritualism share a similar historical evolution, and in “Love’s Last Leave” both types of medium fail to connect those at home with those “who are gone”. By re-narrating the shared history of spiritualism and communications media, Hunt implies the devastation and deadliness of war even when the plot fails to do so. In this essay, we use media theory and narratology to show how the gaps, absences, and uncertainties in the story’s narrative structure are replicated by the communications technology in the story. The failure of narrative, technological, and spiritual mediums to transmit clear messages throughout “Love’s Last Leave” emphasizes how deadly the disconnect between sender and receiver can be.","PeriodicalId":42325,"journal":{"name":"Womens Writing","volume":"29 1","pages":"275 - 294"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42286133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This essay concentrates on supernatural stories by Australian and New Zealand women writers from circa 1880 -1939 specifically Rosa Praed and Dulcie Deamer. Many of the terrors exposed in Australian and New Zealand Gothic and the supernatural derive from disequilibrium when immersed in confusing difference seen as foreign, or indigenous while work by women refuses the fin de siècle demonising of women’s sexuality and intertwines tales of lost children (Rosa Praed: 1851–1935) and domesticity challenged by powerful, but often ultimately punished transformation (Dulcie Deamer: 1890–1972). As women writers fascinated by and engaged in spiritualism and the occult, and as writers of the Gothic and supernatural alongside colonial, indigenous and other histories, Praed and Deamer channel the past, work with the occult, the witchy and the weird, explicitly exploring varied sexualities, foregrounding women’s experiences, challenging conformist roles for women, both themselves and their characters living alternative lifestyles. Their subject matter partly derives from both authors’ interests in spiritualism and their transiting between the Antipodes and Europe (Praed,) or New Zealand, Australia and the Far East/India (Deamer). I discuss the following stories: Rosa Praed “The Bunyip” (1891), “The Ghost Monk” (1908) “The House of Ill-Omen” (1908) and Dulcie Deamer: “As It Was in the Beginning” (1908) “Hallowe’en” (1909), “The Devil’s Ball” (1924).","PeriodicalId":42325,"journal":{"name":"Womens Writing","volume":"29 1","pages":"295 - 318"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41597180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
