ICT enables enhanced manufacturing processes, optimized logistics, solutions supporting environmental protection, and solutions facilitating climate change adaptation, for example. The performance of ICT hardware and electronics has increased tremendously. The capabilities of microchips has increased ca. 100 000-fold in the past 30 years and the power efficiency has increased a million-fold. Yet, various reports show that the ICT sector increases its carbon footprint and energy consumption, while other sectors are lowering their impact on our planet. Thus, there seems to be an adverse development ongoing where most industry sectors can lower their carbon footprint while the ICT sector increases its consumption. This paper looks at the development of the ICT sector and seeks to understand the current development. We argue that a major reason for the rebound effect we are seeing within the ICT sector is the lack of understanding in energy consumption and the cost pressures of developing digital services. The results are software and services that could be much greener and energy efficient but seem to rather go towards darker direction. The ICT industry and software engineering needs to do a clear change of course and take accountability of its activities.","PeriodicalId":423241,"journal":{"name":"Oxford Open Energy","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134574617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here a two-layer integrated receiver-storage (TLIRS) system design is proposed consisting of a cavity receiver and a two-layer packed-bed storage. The first layer is a porous ceramic and the second one is rocks. To enable performance optimization of the system, models for cavity radiation, two-phase transient heat transfer, and local thermal non-equilibrium were derived and validated. The thermal performance of the TLIRS system was assessed and characterized by the absorbing, charging, discharging and overall efficiencies, and by the solar-to-exergy conversion ratio. The results indicate that the porous ceramic layer significantly enhances the absorption of solar irradiance and thus improves the thermal efficiencies. For CSP applications, the TLIRS system potentially achieves high thermal performance in repetitive charging and discharging cycles.","PeriodicalId":423241,"journal":{"name":"Oxford Open Energy","volume":"184 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122860005","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such coordination is difficult, because administrative sectors have long traditions, their own worldviews, and specific objectives they seek to advance. This paper is focused on the complications of achieving coherence between energy and security policies, in a time when the energy sector decarbonisation is accelerating, and major geopolitical shifts are taking place partly in connection to the energy transition. Drawing on the policy coherence literature, this paper analyses 46 expert interviews from three Nordic-Baltic European countries: Estonia, Finland, and Norway. It pays attention to policy coherence between energy and security, the presence or absence of strategies, agencies and other coordinating elements for horizontal coherence, political coherence, and coordination between administrations linked to the two policy domains. Based on the analysis, the countries show significant differences and interesting features for horizontal policy coherence connected to the European energy transition. Moreover, the analysis shows that, prior to 2022, energy was desecuritised in Finland and Norway, where political incoherence also led to incoherence between policy domains and in policy mixes addressing zero-carbon energy transitions and national security. In Estonia, the policy objective of national security has shaped energy policy, but coordination between the policy domains has mostly been dependent on informal interactions leading to some conflicts and tensions.","PeriodicalId":423241,"journal":{"name":"Oxford Open Energy","volume":"47 9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123170350","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given a multitude of grid services with varying interactions and risks, the economics of power system security are similarly, if not more, complex. In this paper we discuss the fundamental relationship between the physical and economic aspects of power system security in low-carbon grids. Specifically, we formulate a physics-informed approach for classifying power system security products and services. The approach yields two critical findings. First, we show that these services, rather than being a homogenous set of public goods, are more preferably regarded as a set of products/services (basket of goods) that have both public and private characteristics. Second, the framework reveals that many new system services are consistent with a common pool resource characterisation. This implies an enhanced role for more localised network planning and co-ordination of access and service provision.","PeriodicalId":423241,"journal":{"name":"Oxford Open Energy","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123861610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As derivative concepts of exergy, energy quality and energy grade, which characterize the quality of energy, have been fully applied in the field of engineering thermophysics during the past four decades. However, their concepts and calculations have not been fully clarified, and summaries of related applications are very rare in the literature. This has led to a considerable degree of ambiguity and confusion in the utilization of these concepts, which is not conducive to the application and promotion of the concepts, and would also hinder the process of the cognition for energy properties. Based on literature research, this paper explains the history of the energy quality and energy grade concepts, and expands the calculations and related benchmark issues (environmental reference states) in detail. Moreover, in order to better understand the functions of energy quality and energy grade, analysis methods derived from the concepts and their applications are reviewed. Through summarizing existing research, future research needs on energy quality and energy grade is elaborated. This paper will help to clarify the physical meanings and calculations of energy quality and energy grade, as well as contribute to in-depth thinking on the energy quality and energy grade and other potential energy properties.","PeriodicalId":423241,"journal":{"name":"Oxford Open Energy","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134113284","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It finds that the impacts are generally small and that in no case is ‘degrowth’ required, although the requirements for the rate and nature of technological developments are challenging. The article then reports on a modelling exercise that investigates in more detail the economic dynamics of achieving the 1.5oC target. It finds that, as with the IPCC scenarios, and assuming the feasibility of at-scale deployment of carbon capture and negative emission technologies, economic growth continues throughout this century, with a major contribution coming from the investment required to decarbonise the energy system.","PeriodicalId":423241,"journal":{"name":"Oxford Open Energy","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128073404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We evaluate the synthesis conditions, morphology, structure of the obtained material using scanning, transmission electron microscopy, and electron diffraction. The sensor performance is assessed in a one-electrode configuration, using thermocycling both to heat and acquire a signal that we further process with a machine learning algorithm for selective determination of alcohols. We found that reduction of Pt precursor by formic acid facilitates the appearance of quasi-1D Pt structures without using any surfactant. High excess of formic acid yields the formation of quasi-dendritic Pt structures with the overall morphology of a sphere and channels whose diameter remains one of the TiO2 nanotubes. Our data suggest the growth of Pt spheres to be diffusion-controlled with constant or decreasing nucleation rate that should include assembling of Pt nanorods. The fabricated sensors based on the synthesized structures show a chemiresistive response to methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol vapors in the mixture with air, which we selectively determine using only one sensor.","PeriodicalId":423241,"journal":{"name":"Oxford Open Energy","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123655396","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
