Photographs of Igorot men were the basis of Worcester’s civilizational argument, whose logic of transformation depended on the valorization of the male Igorot body, which then was reconfigured into military potential and therefore employable by the colonial state to carry out projects of supposed pacification and uplift. This article examines Worcester’s interventions among the Igorot of the Cordillera Central, including the physical manipulation of a specific photograph that purported to show Igorot men caught in the moment of their transformation.","PeriodicalId":42268,"journal":{"name":"Philippine Studies-Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints","volume":"54 1","pages":"245 - 274"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2023-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83011396","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We argue that science fiction is not only a literary genre but also a mode of inquiry into our notions of progress and modernity. Through this lens, we examine Gregorio Brillantes's short story \"The Apollo Centennial.\" Set in a future where the Ferdinand E. Marcos regime never ended, \"The Apollo Centennial\" demonstrates how state infrastructural interventions can discipline Filipino subjects according to the dictates of an authoritarian techno-future. Nevertheless, the short story also gestures to the emancipatory potential of alternative linguistic and sensory modes through which state subjects might imagine other futures that defy narrative sequestration.","PeriodicalId":42268,"journal":{"name":"Philippine Studies-Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints","volume":"23 1","pages":"105 - 93"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2023-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73230585","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
