In order to improve the performance of airport security personnel in searching images of air passenger luggage it is important first to understand fully the requirements of the demanding task. Here, an experiment is reported where eye movements of naive observers and screeners were recorded when they searched 30 X-ray images of air passenger luggage for potential terrorist threat items such as guns, knives and improvised explosive devices. Compared with novices, the advantages of the screeners were speed and accuracy in detecting threats. Eye position data revealed that screeners were faster to fixate on target areas and once they fixated on targets their hit rate was significantly higher. Most of the lEDs were missed by both naive observers and screeners due to interpretation errors which indicated the importance of training. Stimulus salience at the first fixation locations of naive observers and screeners was compared to investigate expertise development. It was found that experience did not change attention preference on stimuli properties at the beginning of the observers visual search. The implications and further studies are discussed.","PeriodicalId":422543,"journal":{"name":"2007 41st Annual IEEE International Carnahan Conference on Security Technology","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132179268","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sheer length of border systems has led some to propose using wide area surveillance systems to reduce cost. Unfortunately the most common of these technologies: thermal infrared and visible wavelength sensors integrated with video analytics and ground radar have line-of-sight limitations and less than optimum nuisance alarm characteristics for real world border applications. The missing link is a cost-effective terrain following trip-wire sensor to cue these wide-area systems and mitigate their performance limitations. Buried ported coax, sometimes called leaky coax or guided radar sensors have protected high value perimeters for over two decades. In theory, their high probability of detection, resistance to defeat and vandalism, invisible terrain following volumetric field and good nuisance alarm characteristics make them well suited to secure borders; but their high cost per zone and inability to accommodate different soil conditions have argued against their use. OmniTrax¿ is a new ultra wideband spread spectrum ranging guided radar which changes this equation with a lower cost per zone, one-meter target resolution and the ability to accommodate different soil types. Ongoing research may eventually result in the ability to track targets along the cables, determine the direction of travel of targets crossing the cables, surface mount the sensor cables in rocky terrain and cost effectively install the sensor cables in soil or sand using cable plows; any of which would only improve the technology's utility in border intrusion detection.","PeriodicalId":422543,"journal":{"name":"2007 41st Annual IEEE International Carnahan Conference on Security Technology","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124547895","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The security imaging systems have special qualitative requirements - the general perceptive image quality is not so important compared to the preservation of selected security image characteristics such as an identification or classification. In the first part we have tested the impact of image enhancing algorithms on the display readability in presence of noise. We have chosen the registration plate as an example and two noise types have been added in order to find the readability threshold. The second part has been devoted to de-noising techniques for image noise removal and deals with advanced WT (wavelet transform) based method of noise suppression for security purposes. Specific requirements on the proposed noise suppression technique can be stated. It should be efficient, both in the sense of low computational complexity but also by means of high noise suppression performance. Moreover, the system must preserve all the important features of the scene being watched. Several tests have been done to verify high noise suppression performance, computational efficiency and low distortion of important features.","PeriodicalId":422543,"journal":{"name":"2007 41st Annual IEEE International Carnahan Conference on Security Technology","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127893574","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Effective screening of passenger bags using state-of-the-art X-ray screening systems is essential to prevent terrorist attacks. The performance of the screening process depends critically on the security personnel, because they decide whether bags are OK or whether they might contain a prohibited item. Screening X-ray images of passenger bags for dangerous and prohibited items effectively and efficiently is a demanding object recognition task. Effectiveness of computer-based training (CBT) on X-ray detection performance was assessed using computer-based tests and on the job performance measures using threat image projection (TIP). It was found that adaptive CBT is a powerful tool to increase detection performance and efficiency of screeners in X-ray image interpretation. Moreover, the results of training could be generalized to the real life situation as shown in the increased detection performance in TIP not only for trained items, but also for new (untrained) items. These results illustrate that CBT is a very useful tool to increase airport security from a human factors perspective.","PeriodicalId":422543,"journal":{"name":"2007 41st Annual IEEE International Carnahan Conference on Security Technology","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114844574","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Tactical Network, or TacNet, is a mobile ad hoc communications network developed by Sandia National Laboratories to provide Blue Force personnel with secure access to critical data, such as real-time maps of resource positions. During development of the system, the Sandia team addressed a variety of issues, including the need for (a) mobile communications without fixed infrastructure and (b) security features, e.g., an access control list. The team considered commercial-off-the-shelf products, but determined that a semi-customized system would better suit its requirements. The final product, TacNet, a field-tested and proven mobile network, incorporates two major systems: (1) an In-Vehicle System, including a graphical user interface, and (2) a Dismounted Solution, also known as Tracker. TacNet employs a line-of-sight mesh radio network, which is self-forming, self-healing, and multi-hopping. Both the In- Vehicle and Tracker systems can be applied in combination or separately to a variety of purposes, including real-time training analysis, targeting capability, and friend or foe identification. This paper describes the development process for TacNet and its future potential, such as extending line-of-sight through unmanned aerial vehicles.","PeriodicalId":422543,"journal":{"name":"2007 41st Annual IEEE International Carnahan Conference on Security Technology","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125602642","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

GIDTA allows the detection of distributed attacks at their early stages using the collection, correlation, and exchange of data provided by different network components and the structures available at the operating system level and the disk management level. In addition, major detection and tolerance capabilities are protected against intruders attempts since they are performed by compromise independent components. The GIDTA components implement different functions based on global and hierarchical models allowing flee grained distributed analysis, and including intelligent capabilities that are able to impose a dynamic behavior taking into consideration the security state of the cooperating entities. A protocol called a neighbor identification protocol is designed to enhance detection and tolerance capabilities. Finally, GIDTA is validated based on the actions it performs in an environment that integrates an airport distributed application, including a flight management system.","PeriodicalId":422543,"journal":{"name":"2007 41st Annual IEEE International Carnahan Conference on Security Technology","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125753212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
