A PV source interfaced with BESS at the DC link has the advantage that it can emulate a conventional generator with the added attribute of providing reserve power. A microgrid test bed is designed with multiple PV/BESS systems dispersed at various locations. The presence of BESS enables the PV sources with the ability to participate in frequency and voltage regulation during grid-connected mode of operation. A droop control based power sharing scheme is employed for the purpose of regulation. A strategy for charging is also employed in the case where the power demanded is less than the PV array power.","PeriodicalId":421943,"journal":{"name":"2013 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125481674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A method is proposed for determining the optimal dispatch of generation output that maximizes transmission margin and minimizes transmission loss under the constraint that the frequency variation is kept within a tolerable frequency range. The optimal dispatch of generation output is determined by optimal power flow calculations based on particle swarm optimization. To check the validity of the proposed method, numerical simulations are carried out on EAST 30-machine 117-bus system of an Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by the results of simulations. Basic analysis of which generators should be utilized to output how much power is performed based on these results.","PeriodicalId":421943,"journal":{"name":"2013 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"192 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114923236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The basic difficulty comes from the highly nonlinear functions relating measurements and voltages defined by the AC power flow models. Today's AC power flow SE approach is, therefore, a highly non-convex problem and, as such, it is prone to convergence problems and sub-optimal solutions. We describe how two recently proposed methods overcome this problem by following a common idea of mapping the voltage space into higher dimensional space in which the problem can be posed as a convex optimization problem because the measurements can be expressed as linear functions in a higher-dimensional space. It is intriguing that the semi-definite programming (SDP)-based SE approach and the direct non-iterative method-based SE approach both employ a similar mapping of voltages into higher dimensional matrix W of voltage products at neighboring buses as new states. These recently discovered similarities are described in some detail by posing both approaches without loss of generality on a three bus system. The two methods differ significantly in their approaches to re-computing actual voltages once the voltage products are estimated. The SDP-based SE approach utilizes the structure of the mapping and states a sufficient rank one condition for matrix W to ensure the unique reconstruction of the actual bus voltages. Both methods are computationally demanding. To overcome this inherent problem, an approximate distributed SDP-based SE algorithm is proposed by performing: 1) a decomposition of the large power grid networks into much smaller clusters where extensive information exchange is not needed; and 2) by performing a Lagrangian dual decomposition-based computation and message-passing within each cluster. The accuracy of the SDP-based distributed algorithm is illustrated by comparing the results to those obtained using the SDP-based SE estimator. Advantages of the SDP-based methods when compared to today's AC power flow based SE are illustrated by showing numerical problems experienced when using the IEEE test systems.","PeriodicalId":421943,"journal":{"name":"2013 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129022272","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the advent of Phasor Measurement Units (PMU), a huge amount of power system data is being stored day-to-day in the Phasor Data Collectors (PDCs). Knowledge discovery and machine learning techniques can make use of this data to extract valuable information and interesting patterns in these databases. In this paper, Symbolic Aggregate ApproXimation (SAX) is used to convert the time stamped phasor data from the PMUs into symbolic strings and Data Mining (DM) algorithms are used to predict the current state of a power system. Along with the state, the location and cause of disturbance is also identified in minimal time. The effectiveness of different DM algorithms for determining state of a power system is also shown using the measures of accuracy, precision and recall.","PeriodicalId":421943,"journal":{"name":"2013 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126975282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a generalized method based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) for determining how much reactive power is necessary to provide control over the voltage profile of the distribution line for any given operational condition and number of PV connections. The method is tested with data based on the IEEE benchmark 13-bus feeder system and simulations are run in DIgSILENT using the same system to validate the results. A future two-level distributed control architecture is described that will utilize the methods developed in this paper to provide reactive power compensation for voltage control of an entire feeder line without the need for global information sharing.","PeriodicalId":421943,"journal":{"name":"2013 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126451920","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its performance is compared with that of a proportional integral (PI) controller under various load conditions to analyze set point tracking capabilities, disturbance rejection, and step response. Both control strategies (FLC and PI) were designed and simulated using Matlab's Fuzzy Logic Toolbox and Simulink. The simulation results have also been validated through real-time implementation using dSpace controller. For this purpose, it is necessary to maintain the balance between demand and supply power in real time. Governors change inputs of turbines when frequency variation is caused by a load change. But, in an overload condition, the governor cannot control the frequency drop because of its slow response. In this paper, a new control strategy for two connected systems with HVDC is proposed. SVM allows us to maximize the exploitation of the converter hardware. Compared to sine PWM, SVM can achieve a higher AC voltage level (15% more in magnitude). This paper develops SVM models in Matlab/Simulink and PSCAD, two most popular packages for power system dynamic studies. Theory of space vector will be clearly explained to present the principles of SVM based sinusoidal waveform synthesis. The three unique contributions of this paper include: (i) A sawtooth triangular waveform is used to generate repeating switching period for digital control. (ii) A technique to integrate blocks with different sampling rates is employed to generate SVM pulses. (ii) Both Matlab/Simulink and PSCAD models are developed. The developed models are very useful to develop detailed SVM enabled power converters in power system studies. A step by step tutorial of the model development procedure and the simulation results are provided to demonstrate the accuracy of the SVM models.","PeriodicalId":421943,"journal":{"name":"2013 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"158 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133302519","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Evaluating the CV of wind power has been the focus. Simulating wind speed is a prerequisite for the wind power CV evaluation, since the available actual wind speed data is usually limited. Also, the reliability has to be assessed by certain indices to measure the contribution of wind power to the generation adequacy. In fact, to date, such evaluation of CV is confronted with the confusion of how to select wind speed simulation methods and reliability metrics. This study first incorporates the probability, frequency, and duration indices of the at-risk, marginal, and healthy states from the well-being analysis, together with several common wind speed simulation methods, in a consistent framework to evaluate the CV of wind power for a thorough comparison. A convenient approach to approximate the CV based on a sequential Monte Carlo simulation technique is proposed. Then with the wind integrated IEEE-RTS case study, the impacts of different wind speed simulation methods and reliability metrics on both the reliability assessment of generating systems, and the CV evaluation of wind power, are investigated. Finally, recommendations of their usage are presented.","PeriodicalId":421943,"journal":{"name":"2013 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133240321","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

State estimation is paramount for reliable operation of large-scale power systems. Even with modern multi-core processors, the large number of computations in state estimation are still a burden on time and are highly memory intensive. In this paper the idea of using massively parallel graphic processing units (GPUs) for weighted least squares (WLS) based state estimation is introduced and executed. The GPU is especially designed for processing large data sets. A data-parallel implementation of the WLS method is proposed. The speed of the GPU-based state estimation for several test systems is compared with a sequential CPU-based program. The simulation results show a speed-up of 38 for a 4992-bus system.","PeriodicalId":421943,"journal":{"name":"2013 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"133 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127365585","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
