The proposed algorithm is suited to the performance analysis of a leaky bucket (LB) fed with a wide range of discrete traffic sources, including Markov modulated Bernoulli processes (MMBP) and general on-off source models. The alternative approach, is a heuristic framework, based on the time /spl epsi/-quantile function associated with a traffic source. This has also been used for finding the SCR value of the source. The effectiveness and capabilities of these two approaches are investigated, and comments on the suitability of application for each approach is given.","PeriodicalId":420811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of LCN - 21st Annual Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127353136","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The selection of the request is on the basis of the time it arrives at the hub port. A grant from the hub has a burst size associated with it. An end system is allowed to transmit as long as its burst quota is not quenched. The performance of the proposed protocol has been evaluated using simulation modeling and it has been verified that the burst mode protocol outperforms the standard demand priority protocol for Gb/s links.","PeriodicalId":420811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of LCN - 21st Annual Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128609392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, connectionless switched multimegabit data service (SMDS) and connection-oriented frame relay based broadband services an being offered by a number of major operators in the US and Europe. This paper considers the issues that need to be addressed in the design of security services for such high speed networks. First the relevant characteristics of broadband network interfaces an discussed, some of the existing security protocols for TCP/IP and OSI networks are reviewed, and their suitability for providing security in broadband networks assessed. Then the developed arguments are applied to design security services for the connectionless SMDS and the connection-oriented frame relay networks.","PeriodicalId":420811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of LCN - 21st Annual Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122652815","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the mass storage system in supporting such services demands proper organization and management. We present a three-level hierarchical network storage architecture for the video-on-demand storage system. At the first-level (local service center, LSC) a limited number of programs with high viewing probabilities are stored while at the second-level (local central service center, LCSC) a few programs with second high viewing probabilities are stored. The third-level (central service center, CSC) contains all programs provided in the system. Based on this architecture and the program viewing probability distribution function, we use a minimum-cost function to find out the number of programs stored in the two service centers (LSC and LCSC) and the number of links among these three service centers. We also describe two program reallocation algorithms which swap programs between service centers according to the change in user request patterns.","PeriodicalId":420811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of LCN - 21st Annual Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123870939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Furthermore, this switching system supports interworking between existing LANs and ATM LANs. To do this, a special interworking unit has been developed. It allows existing LAN subscribers to connect directly to our switch. Therefore, existing LAN subscribers may look upon this switch as a proxy. We describe the hardware structure of the interworking unit and how it handles ARP and IP packets to provide seamless IP services on ATM LAN. We show some message flows between hosts via the interworking units and the routers on the ATM LAN to resolve the address resolution problems. We also address the ATM LAN router briefly. Based on IP over ATM, existing routing protocols can be used without any modification.","PeriodicalId":420811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of LCN - 21st Annual Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116814911","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The environment provides content creation, user registration, course material storage, multiple delivery means, and end-user viewing tools. An intriguing aspect of the environment is how to model a lecture in terms of pre-, in-, and post-class information. We regard a lecture model collectively as an activity consisting of three elements: lecture materials, lecture presentation, and lecture interaction. We derive the synchronization specification for the media objects and define strong-weak networked hyperlink (SWNH) to represent the lecture structure and inter/intra media object reference in the distributed network environment. The specification and representation exhibit an object-oriented modular design. The presentation of the lecture embody both the event-driven and timeline-based presentation synchronization where the browsing and authoring tools developed earlier fit right into the learning environment, e.g. FLIPS and HQT by the authors, or are immediately available through other providers, e.g. Web browsers.","PeriodicalId":420811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of LCN - 21st Annual Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125307588","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Typically, the QoS includes bandwidth, delay, and delay jitter. This paper presents a real-time protocol to support multimedia communications in which the connections are established with efficient resource reservation and proper admission control. During data transmission, the rate, jitter control, and packet scheduling techniques are employed to fulfil the performance contract. The protocol also incorporates a multicast function to provide group communications. This protocol is implemented on a high-speed network which consists of interconnected ATM switches, FDDI networks, routers, and hosts. Experiments have been carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the QoS guaranteed protocol. Measured results indicate that the proposed protocol performs well to guarantee the QoS in terms of the bandwidth, delay, and delay jitter.","PeriodicalId":420811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of LCN - 21st Annual Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126488441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our work shows that long-term correlations may cause the network performance to degrade catastrophically even if the cell rate of the traffic source can be adjusted dynamically according to the network load and the peak cell rate can be bounded effectively. Experimental evidence exists supporting our analytical results. Therefore, without taking traffic correlations into account, congestion control and quality-of-service guarantees may not be effective.","PeriodicalId":420811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of LCN - 21st Annual Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128367202","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Besides, CAC is required to consume a minimum of time and space to make call acceptance decisions. We present an efficient neural-network-based CAC (NNCAC) mechanism for ATM networks with heterogeneous arrivals. All heterogeneous traffic calls are initially categorized into various classes. Based on the number of calls in each class, the NNCAC efficiently and accurately estimates the cell delay and cell loss ratio of each class in real time by means of a pre-trained neural network. According to our decent study which exhibits the superiority of the employment of analysis-based training data over simulation-based data, we particularly construct the training data from heterogeneous-arrival dual-class queueing model M/sup [N1]/+I/sup [N2]//D/1/K, where M and I represent the Bernoulli process and interrupted Bernoulli process, and N/sub 1/ and N/sub 2/ represent the corresponding numbers of calls, respectively. Analytic results of the queueing model are confirmed by simulation results. Finally, we demonstrate the profound agreement of our neural-network-based estimated results with analytic results, justifying the viability of our NNCAC mechanism.","PeriodicalId":420811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of LCN - 21st Annual Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133368861","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Formal experimental methods are used to evaluate the relative performance of three simple multicast routing algorithms on simple mesh-based networks, using call-level simulation. The performance study focuses on the scalability of multicast routing algorithms with respect to network size, the level of multicast traffic on the network, and the size of multicast groups. The results show that the choice of a multicast routing algorithm has a major impact on network performance. Shared link algorithms, which route multicast calls along common link channels whenever possible, improve the overall call blocking performance, reduce the call blocking bias against large multicast groups, and scale much better with network size. However, the improved call blocking performance for multicast calls comes at the expense of increased call blocking for unicast calls.","PeriodicalId":420811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of LCN - 21st Annual Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129747088","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
