In order to make better use of manganese fines as well as to save energy and cost in the industry, the sintering process of manganese ore is particularly important. In current study, three different Mn ores are selected to study the effect of ore proportion and basicity on the properties of sinters. Both small scale and pilot scale sintering experiments were carried out. Physical properties of the sinters at room temperature were examined and the sinters were also detected by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and optical microscope to investigate the mineral phase compositions and microstructures afterwards. The results showed that in the range of low basicity, the increase of basicity will make the strength of sinter deteriorate and the porosity decrease. Under the current experimental conditions, scheme 1 and scheme 4 with basicity of 0.7 are the better process parameters, which are applied for the pilot experiment in the sintering pot. A distinctive feature of the system from traditional electric mode regulator is the presence of mathematical and software for determining the distribution of active power over characteristic zones of the near-electrode space (arc, shunt, melt). Rational distribution of power in the near-electrode space between the arc, shunt and melt ensures maximum furnace performance with minimum power consumption and allows optimizing the electrode bypass mode depending on the intensity of the arc process. The influence of the power distribution between the arc and the shunt on the specific power consumption in the production of FeSi75 is considered. The dependence of the specific power consumption and furnace productivity on the values of the power released in the arc and shunt zones has been revealed. The redistribution of active power in the near-electrode space between the arc and the shunt towards an increase in the arc power leads to a decrease in the specific power consumption and an increase in the furnace productivity. In ferrochrome smelting industry for example, preheating the feed before smelting in SAF has shown excellent results in stabilizing SAF smelting operation by removing moisture and volatiles. More importantly, preheating has shown to reduce smelting energy consumption and to increase the smelting furnace capacity. Furthermore, reducing SAF energy consumption has significant benefits in reducing CO2 emissions. However, preheating technology is currently not widely used in ferromanganese production. In ferromanganese production, smelting is mostly done using a mixture of lump and sintered ore as feed to SAF. The behaviour of feed during preheating in separate shaft kiln is still poorly known in smelting. This research is aimed at understanding optimal operating conditions/steps that could be suitable for using preheating technology when lump ore is used in the feed mix. The samples were collected at the end of the tapping runner, at the top layer of the charge and from the electrode above charge level while the furnace was running or shortly after a stop (< 2 hours). The slag samples from the tapping runner mainly consisted of SiO2, Al2O3 and CaO. The viscosity of the samples was calculated and found to be between 1.9 to 6.6 poise at 1800 ˚C under normal tapping conditions. A slag sample that was reported to be from a visually high viscosity slag was found to contain double the amount of SiO2 compared to the other slag samples taken during normal tapping conditions. It was observed an indication of a correlation between the amount of CaO and increasing furnace power, while the amount of SiO2 in the slag indicated a decrease with increased furnace power. The amount of Al2O3 did not show a significant correlation with the furnace power. Samples from the electrode and the charge surface showed a slag phase consisting of mainly SiO2 and iron oxide. Some metal droplets were also observed on the electrode and the charge surface. Attempt for hybridization of the thermochemical and thermophysical properties of molten SiO2-Al2O3-CaO slags has been recently made at SINTEF Industry. The power of the deep neural networks for the multiphysical modelling of ferroalloy production will be demonstrated in the paper. A deep neural network has been set up for representing thermophysical (electronic conductivity, liquidus temperature, viscosity as well as density) and thermochemical (slag-metal equilibrium composition) properties of the SiO2-Al2O3-CaO system. The physics-based models were first used to model the density, conductivity and viscosity of molten SiO2-Al2O3-CaO slags. Liquidus temperature and metal-slag equilibrium data were calculated using the well-known thermochemical software package, FactSage. These physical models can be used as high-throughput calculation tools for the generation of industrial important labelled data. The DNN model can represent the above labelled metadata with a set of optimized parameters. The DNN model developed in the present study consists of 4 input variables (composition and temperature), 1 hidden layer and 5 output properties was used. The DNN model calculation can almost entirely reproduce all above properties using about 120 parameters. Furthermore, the DNN model can be automatically updated by continuously feeding the experimental data from the laboratory and industry (machine learning). To get this part of the process into a more scientific area, represented by e.g. CFD modelling, a conceptual model on the process is needed. This paper will hence start the work on describing some of the operational parameters that may link the furnace operation to the tapping process. The tapping process of a Si/FeSi furnace, that is the tapping rate, will be dependent on the zones and material in the furnace. The drainage of the furnace can be divided into 3 steps; Step 1 that describes the drainage from the back-electrodes to the tap-electrode, Step 2 that is the drainage in the near tap-hole region, and Step 3, the flow through the tap-hole. Each of these steps will be dependent on the zones and materials in the furnace. The flow from the back-electrodes (Step 1) will be determined by furnace gas pressure as well as high viscosity materials, as e.g. a slag layer, or SiC crusts, hindering the flow. Affecting the flow from the tap-electrode to the tap-hole (Step2), it is seen that the metal must drain through a slag zone filled with small SiC particles. High quality high carbon ferrochromium (HQ HC FeCr) is produced in 3 different plants with 12 furnaces. These plants are Eti Krom Inc in Turkey, Vargon Alloys AB in Sweden and Tikhvin Ferro Alloys in Russia. Tap-hole design and management is important for stable furnace operations and longevity of tap-hole in submerged arc furnaces. Tap-hole change and brick repair process should be as simple as possible to minimize safety risks and downtime. This paper is an improvement study on tap-hole design with the goal of increasing longevity of tap-hole and simplify tap-hole changing process. Eramet Norway is committed to reducing its CO2 footprint, and have started several actions in order to reach its long-term climate goals. One of the short-term actions is to optimize the pre-reduction and raw material usage. The usage of carbonated materials contributes to the CO2 emissions both through releasing the bound CO2, and through the released CO2 reacting with solid carbon according to the Boudouard reaction. Removing carbonated fluxes is thus one potential way of reducing the CO2emissions from the furnace. Mass balance calculations were done to check the potential for CO2reduction through removing fluxes, namely dolomite, from the mix blend on a 32 MW SiMn furnace.An industrial trial was run to verify the results from the mass balance. The trial without dolomite lasted for over four months with good operational results. A decrease in CO2 footprint of 8.5% and a reduction in SEC of 5% was achieved when compared to the reference with dolomite.
