Alternatives for allocation of IP addresses are also discussed. The piconet consists of Bluetooth enabled computing devices, such as laptops, which may have Internet connections over Ethernet, WLAN, or GSM/UMTS. It is formed according to an automatic piconet formation procedure. So a normal telephony service is not guaranteed because a call might be established while the codec is not normally worked, and unnecessary resource wastage is happening because a call might be cleared while the operation of codec functions is continued Therefore, it is required that the codec is controlled depending on the call state. In this paper, it is proposed that the codec in the UE is controlled by the call control protocol which administers the call state by execution of call control procedures, and preventing normal call control procedures being executed even in case of abnormal codec operation, call control procedures are executed depending on the result of codec controls. Bursty packet loss caused by a channel outage will be a significant problem in the communication systems now being developed because TCP applications, especially after experiencing bursty packet loss, will take a much longer time to recover. Our algorithm, which needs to be installed only in a client, includes transmission of pseudo-acknowledgement packets and adjustment of the advertised receive window (rwin) size as soon as the loss ends. The algorithm works with a standard TCP-Reno version with a SACK option used in both the server and the client. This experimentation consists of two items - TCP/IP and MPEG-2 video/audio transmission over 155 Mbps ATM based satellite network. The goals of this experimentation are to measure TCP performance when the only standard mechanisms approved by IETF in order to improve TCP performance in the long fat network (LFN) are used, to derive the effects of quality for the high definition video stream when MPEG-2 TS is transmitted through a 155 Mbps satellite ATM link. Different application setups are introduced and realistic simulations based on measured propagation data are described. Relationships between the propagation characteristics, the antenna configurations, and the achievable bit error rates are shown. Indeed, the base station can modify in real time the distribution of its allocation in order to free resources for incoming users. This allocation is applied in different ways depending on the user's service (voice, data, etc.). For example, a Web service does not occupy a channel in the same way of a voice user. We provide a user profile based upon a cell or user approach. A resource allocation scheme is then introduced in order to compare these two approaches. Signal degradation is looked at by providing graphs of degradation (dB) against the E/sub b//N/sub 0/ (dB). We also look at the effect of phase noise variance on the signal-to-noise ratio of the signal. Some discussion about the oscillator phase noise mask type to be used in HIPERLAN/2 to achieve acceptable signal-to-noise ratio under the phase noise effect is provided. Lastly, the effect on system performance of phase noise due to the fading channel is investigated. The paper illustrates how the system level performance can be quantified (measured) and qualified (good or bad) in terms of spectral efficiency and statistical end user quality. Two methods are compared: spectrum efficiency, proposed by the 3GPP standard; a cost function, introduced theoretically as a weighted sum of key performance indicators. Extensive dynamic simulations have been run to study the effects of different network configurations by means of the two methods. Computer simulation is carried out using measured propagation data, and throughput performances for the different propagation characteristics are compared. The packet delay performance is evaluated along with the altitude of satellite when the ARQ (automatic repeat request) scheme is introduced for error control. Also proposed is the adaptive data rate slotted CDMA ALOHA. In this method the data rate is changed for every packet by the situation of the propagation path and is applied to slotted CDMA ALOHA. The power policies adopted for basic ARQ protocols are characterized, and a comparison of their performance is studied.
