Interference managements in terms of power control and interference cancellation have been investigated extensively in the past. We consider combining power control (PC) and successive interference cancellation (SIC), and show that the performance can be significantly improved by controlling the transmission power such that received power levels are geometrically distributed. We also show that the dynamic range of transmission power levels can be reduced by combining PC with SIC, thereby alleviating a stringent requirement on power amplifier and step size/frequency of power control commands.","PeriodicalId":420635,"journal":{"name":"The 5th International Symposium on Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129290435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We show that the postdetection-combining-based macrodiversity provides larger performance gain than the selection-based one, especially for the channel characterized by random multipath parameters. It is also shown that the gain obtained by using the postdetection-combining-based macrodiversity is reduced more and more as the correlation among the macrodiversity ports increases. Even for the fully correlated shadowing situation, however, the postdetection-combining-based macrodiversity still provides a considerable gain compared with no diversity case.","PeriodicalId":420635,"journal":{"name":"The 5th International Symposium on Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129346107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is even more pronounced for multimedia applications and QoS-sensitive transport of their traffic. They are enabled by the access bandwidth available with IEEE 802.11b and 802.11a WLANs. Scalable QoS control in wired networks is a challenging problem on its own; wireless access and mobility amplify the problem. Our current work advances an integrated solution for QoS support of mobile multimedia applications for wired/wireless networks. We build on our work in scalable QoS control for wired IP networks (see Chen, S. and Park, K., Proc. IEEE INFOCOM '99, p.864-72, 1999; Ren, H. and Park, K., Proc. IEEE/IFIP IWQoS, p.211-20, 2000), and extend it to encompass mobile wireless access via WLANs. The aim of this overview is to share our experience of building an integrated state-of-the-art wired/wireless IP network populated by QoS-enabled applications, which is based on the IP-centric scalable QoS architecture, Q-Bahn. The unexpected rise of WLANs is changing the networking landscape, perhaps a new beginning for wireless/mobile networking.","PeriodicalId":420635,"journal":{"name":"The 5th International Symposium on Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications","volume":"435 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123896253","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One is constellation rearrangement that rearranges the signal constellation of QAM signals between retransmissions. The other is spreading code rearrangement that changes the spreading code with which the same symbol is transmitted in each retransmission. The whole interference, including intersymbol interference (ISI), multiple access interference (MAI), and narrowband interference (NBI), is considered. Low-complexity continuously iterative nonlinear space-time soft interference cancellation and decoding techniques are proposed. The estimation of the parameters of the probability density function (PDF) of the whole interference and noise per propagation path per antenna element is directly computed by using the outputs of a chip-matched filter. The optimal combining weight is used to combine all the soft receiving signals to make the final statistic decision. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed receiver structure offers significant performance gain over some existing approaches in both Gaussian and nonGaussian time-selective fading channels.","PeriodicalId":420635,"journal":{"name":"The 5th International Symposium on Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124083094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Typical applications of sensor networks include monitoring of possibly very large, remote and/or inaccessible areas, surveillance, and smart environments, like meeting rooms, buildings, homes, and highways. Our focus is on visual sensor networks, which are networks of cameras equipped with enough processing power to support local image analysis. The paper describes ongoing research at UCSC in visual sensor networks and highlights the research challenges to be addressed. It motivates the need for tight coupling between vision techniques and communication protocols for more effective monitoring/tracking capabilities (by having sensors operate in a coordinated manner), as well as energy- and bandwidth-efficient protocols which prolong the operational life of the sensor network.","PeriodicalId":420635,"journal":{"name":"The 5th International Symposium on Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128077588","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Application of the adaptive transmission technique to the OFDM system has been considered in many areas in order to utilize the advantage of the adaptive schemes. However, accurate estimation of channel conditions, especially signal to interference ratio (SIR) must be advanced for efficient adaptive schemes. In this paper, we propose a channel quality estimation technique for adaptive OFDM systems which suffer from interference due to channel estimation error and thermal noise. The proposed scheme estimates the variance of thermal noise by using the null space of the channel gain matrix in an OFDM symbol first, then evaluates the total interference power from the estimated thermal noise variance. Simulation results show that the proposed estimation algorithm produces more than an order of better estimates than the conventional algorithm even with fewer of pilots.","PeriodicalId":420635,"journal":{"name":"The 5th International Symposium on Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130266865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
