Berry ’ s book blends social and cultural approaches to examine the dynamics of exclusion, both social and geographical, across the cusp of late medieval and early modern eras in London. Developed from her University of London PhD, this monograph is organised around five broad themes, each of which concentrates on a different primary source base. Each of these themes – from socio-spatial networks, to mobility, and regulation of reputations – is related to its neighbours through a common framework of spa-tialising social history. The result is a nuanced approach to inclusion and exclusion that accords more significance to the strategies employed by the marginalised than the formal hierarchies that are so often the focus of traditional structural approaches to pre-modern urban history.","PeriodicalId":420105,"journal":{"name":"TSEG - The Low Countries Journal of Social and Economic History","volume":"313 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115668898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They would have invested that capital mainly in securities. In this article it is made clear that investments, like consumption, were culturally determined and that in this connection it is better to speak of investment culture. This culture differed per region and social group. After 1800, various rural investment cultures were emerging, in which land on the one hand and textile industry on the other becoming the most important investment objects. These developments had social, cultural and economic consequences, but it also shows that the Dutch countryside emancipated in relation to the city.","PeriodicalId":420105,"journal":{"name":"TSEG - The Low Countries Journal of Social and Economic History","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132238151","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even so, did this also mean that little changed in the sale of alcohol? This article examines how the Liquor Act was implemented locally in Leiden and what impact this had on the sale of alcohol there. To this end, both city council minutes and patent registers are analyzed. Patent registers served as compulsory patent taxes and as licenses for liquor stores and drinking establishments. They provide valuable insight into the variation within the sector for alcohol sales in Leiden throughout the nineteenth century. Our examination shows that, contrary to the criticism of the law, the Liquor Act had both short- and long-term effects on Leiden’s pubscape. It led to a limited decrease in the number of public houses and primarily affected the smallest public houses, often owned by women.","PeriodicalId":420105,"journal":{"name":"TSEG - The Low Countries Journal of Social and Economic History","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122183095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
