Met die enigszins onverwachte woorden start Jan Bremans ‘ten geleide’ bij zijn recente bundeling essays, uitgegeven onder de titel ‘Kolonialisme en Racisme’. Eerder dan een introductie van een duidelijk wetenschappelijk programma of een analytische inleiding op zijn werk, leest de 'ten geleide' als een intieme familiegeschiedenis, die Jan helpt zichzelf sociologisch te situeren in de inmiddels steeds diverser wordende Nederlandse samenleving. Die keuze getuigt van een sterk bewustzijn van de invloed van de eigen levensloop en ervaringen op de blik waarmee onderzoekers naar de wereld kijken. Als inleiding heeft hij daar nog enkele fragmenten uit zijn autobiografie bij opgenomen die duidelijk maken waar hij vandaan komt en wat hem drijft. De bundel is helder geschreven en kent, ondanks het brede scala van behandelde onderwerpen, enkele duidelijke lijnen. In het bijzonder drie thema’s komen uitgebreid aan de orde: de sociale kwestie, de koloniale kwestie en de verbanden tussen beide. Based on extensive demographic statistical analyses and the autobiography of Rahman Mohammed Khan, this research concludes that familial relations, especially those formed in Suriname, had a strong effect on the relative share of Hindustanis settling themselves in Suriname after their contract period. Dat is soms ongemakkelijk maar vaak inspirerend, vooral wanneer Jan Breman het belang benadrukt van het analyseren van racisme op het niveau van het mondiale kapitalisme. Het boek toont racisme in dienst van de wereldwijde uitbuiting van arbeid, die in gebieden buiten het directe gezichtsveld van de Nederlandse lezer haar meest extreme, dodelijke excessen blijft tonen. Ik ga graag de dialoog aan met Jan Breman over de inzichten die hij in zijn boek aandraagt en in die context wil ik ook een kwestie aansnijden die ik bijzonder opvallend vind: dat we momenteel in de paradoxale situatie zijn beland dat de grotendeels witte, liberale eigenaren en beheerders van het kapitaal – diegenen die in Jan Bremans boek nog zo duidelijk naar voren komen als actieve organisatoren van racistisch gedachtegoed en racistische wetten – zich inmiddels voordoen als grote voorstanders van antiracisme. En dat terwijl gevestigde linkse partijen en antiracistisch activisme nu vaak op gespannen voet staan.
