Makin","doi":"10.20472/iac.2019.051.022","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.20472/iac.2019.051.022","url":null,"abstract":"While the United States is presently the world?s largest economy, China is the world?s largest exporter, replacing the US as the largest manufacturing nation a decade ago. Since then, the China-US trade imbalance has been the key source of economic tension between the two superpowers, stretching back to concerns raised by the Bush and Obama administrations. Members of the European Union have had similar concerns about their trade imbalances with China. In the US, since the turn of the century the demise of manufacturing firms unable to compete against low priced Chinese imports has repeatedly sparked calls for retaliatory action by the US government against China. Given the impact exchange rates have on international competitiveness and trade flows, the value of the exchange rate has also been central to the ongoing China-US dialogue on the trade imbalance. The US government has repeatedly pressed China to revalue its currency from the mid-2000s on the grounds that its undervalued currency boosted the competitiveness of China?s manufacturing sector and contributed to the bilateral trade imbalance. While the CNY/$US exchange rate has strengthened significantly over the past decade, somewhat paradoxically, China?s trade deficit with the United States has continued to widen from a deficit of near $80 billion in 2000 to close to $400 billion in 2018. Under the Trump administration, direct action has been taken to reduce this trade imbalance by imposing tariffs on Chinese imports to the US, beginning with tariffs on steel and aluminium and extended to solar panels and household appliances. China has retaliated by imposing tariffs on chemicals, coal, medical equipment and soybeans.This paper presents a two-country international macroeconomic framework for examining the determinants of the China-US trade imbalance. Inspired by Alexander?s (1952) much neglected absorption approach, it emphasises that the bilateral trade imbalance reflects discrepancies between levels of their respective output, or aggregate supply, and expenditure, or aggregate demand. The paper is structured as follows. Section 2 summarises recent Chinese and US growth, bilateral balance of payments trends and protectionist measures, before Section 3 proposes a simple international macroeconomic framework based on the distinction between output and expenditure to examine the key issues. Section 4 then adapts the framework to examine the influence of discrepant economic growth, exchange rate management, protectionist measures and foreign direct investment on the trade imbalance, before Section 5 draws policy implications.","PeriodicalId":419018,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 51st International Academic Conference, Vienna","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129455238","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A growing part of the tourism industry is the urban tourism. UNWTO describes urban tourism as trips to cities or places with high population density. Several researchers have tried to develop a framework for understanding urban tourism, which is highly important to cities' economies but also requires significant urban infrastructures. In Europe, urban tourism increased by 4.3% representing over 65% of total bedights (235.1 million in 2014). The current research focuses on testing the effect of residence on the number of domestic vacations and on vacations abroad and on the selected type of vacation (nature or urban). The dependent variable is preferences for nature vs. urban destination, measured on a Likert scale. The independent variables include socio-demographic variables, type of residential setting—city or other type of setting. The data were collected using questionnaires distributed between March and June 2018 in different locations in Israel. 46 percent of the respondent were male, the average age was 28 and 75 percent leave in cities. The results indicate that there is no significant correlation between the type of residence and the number of vacations abroad, however those who do not live in a city take significantly more domestic vacations. The regression results indicate that when traveling abroad: Urban tourism is more preferred by those that live in cities and by younger tourists. Similar results are obtained for domestic tourism. The results can help policymakers adapt their marketing efforts to the right tourist. For example, if they want to market urban tourism to international tourists they should address their marketing efforts to those who live in cities and to younger people. Further research should consider the effects of factors such as length of stay, potential travel companions, and other characteristics of the destination (modern or developed country) on destination preferences.","PeriodicalId":419018,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 51st International Academic Conference, Vienna","volume":"209 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122372158","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has been a major concern to most stakeholders in education because of its negative effect on the performance of the students in both internal and external examinations. Previous studies conducted on factors attributable to reading habit formation among students have concentrated more on high cost of books, non-existence of libraries, unavailability of relevant books in public secondary schools. This study, therefore, was carried out to examine educational media utilisation and cognitive styles (field dependent and field independent) as correlates of reading habit of students in private secondary schools in Oyo state, Nigeria. The survey research design of correlational type was adopted. The multistage sampling procedure was used. Simple random sampling technique was adopted to select 20 out of 33 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Oyo State, Nigeria. From each of the 20 LGAs, two private secondary schools were randomly selected; while the total enumeration technique was used to include all the 941 senior secondary school II students from the selected schools. Instruments used were Educational Media Utilisation Observation (r=0.87), Cognitive Styles (r=0.72) and Reading Habit (r=0.78) scales. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s product moment correlation and multiple regression techniques were used at 0.05 level of significance. Educational media mostly utilised were smart phones (χ =2.33) and Internet (χ =2.27). Major purposes of educational media utilisation include; learning (χ =2.35), vocabulary improvement (χ =2.14) and reading ability enhancement (χ =2.12). Students’ levels of cognitive styles were field dependent (χ =2.53) and field independent (χ =2.23). Educational media utilisation (r = 0.25) and cognitive style (r = 0.37) had positive significant correlation with reading habit of students. Educational media utilization and field independent influenced reading habit of students in private secondary schools in Oyo State, Nigeria. Proper attention should be given to relevant educational media and cognitive styles of students in order to ensure development and formation of good reading habit among secondary school students in Oyo State, Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":419018,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 51st International Academic Conference, Vienna","volume":"224 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122991238","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, knowing which methods of investment lead to better levels of innovation is essential in a global and very competitive economy as the current one. Because frequently and usually the transfer of technological knowledge takes place among different sectors, it is essential to compare them. In the global world, in order to improve own business and own development, it is essential to understand the actual and real situation of the market and the position occupied in it, so as to detect quickly its possible progress. In this study, to define the position of companies belonging to one or more sectors in the evolutionary process of innovation, I propose a statistical-mathematical method which orders them using publicly available and therefore cost-free data. I analyze the innovative efforts of companies considering 11 different specific initiatives, including accelerators, incubators and innovation labs, over an extended period of time. To demonstrate concretely my method, I use a dataset composed of 80 companies operating in emerging markets, identifying so which types of investments are the best and which companies and sectors are the most innovative. The objective of my method is to provide each individual company with the opportunity to understand which innovative initiatives are more profitable for its expansion in the market and its level of innovation in comparison with the others, so as to be able to apply and profitably to orient own investments.","PeriodicalId":419018,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 51st International Academic Conference, Vienna","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123816694","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study discovers the impact of board independence, women on board and auditor independence on the fraud in financial reporting for a sample covers of 86 year observations of industrial firms listed in Amman Stock Exchange from 2015 to 2016. In this study, income smoothing was a proxy for fraud in financial reporting. Using the multiple regression analysis, the results revealed that board independence and auditor independence plays the key role in prevention the fraud in financial reporting. This study concluded that more independent directors would make lower fraud in financial report. This study provides evidence that the provision of NAS by an external auditor positively contributes to fraud in financial reporting. Nevertheless, the outcomes show that the women on board do not have any effect on the fraud in the financial reporting among industrial Jordanian firms. The current study contributes to the existing literature of fraud and stimulates future research about the factors determinants of the fraud in financial reporting in other developing countries.","PeriodicalId":419018,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 51st International Academic Conference, Vienna","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123516116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
