The mask rim curve should contact the face without gaps. This work identifies corresponding points on the mask and facial landmarks. The landmarks define a coordinate frame which helps extract rim contours (mask contours) and facial midline contours (profile contours) from the 3D model. Bilateral symmetrisation procedures are used to correct mild asymmetry in the mask contours. The statistical distribution induced by the contours on a grid is used to derive percentile contour geometries. Mask shapes generated by stacking elliptic cross sections, scaling and convex hull have been explored. 5th, 50th and 85th percentile masks are used for visual fit evaluation on a set of representative faces. The procedure establishes that the landmark-based approach provides a systematic method not only for design but also for fit evaluation.","PeriodicalId":417746,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Human Factors Modelling and Simulation","volume":"5 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120893890","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lumbar vertebrae are modelled as rigid bodies and all other Flexible Joint Structures (FJS) (i.e., ligaments, cartilage, muscles, and tendons) are modelled collectively as massless springs and dampers. Coupling coefficients, providing additional constraints, are incorporated into the model. Unknown model coefficients (nominally spring, damping and coupling coefficients) are automatically determined by systematically matching the model predictions to spine forced displacement-time data. A robust parameter optimisation module (Monte Carlo routine and Genetic Algorithm (GA)) was developed for this purpose. Two test cases were included for parameters estimation and model verification.","PeriodicalId":417746,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Human Factors Modelling and Simulation","volume":"64 8","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114023694","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this study is to investigate the implications of the steering wheel unit orientation by using 'Expecting', the computational pregnant occupant model developed at Loughborough University. Three steering column angles and three steering wheel angles are modelled in a subcompact mini-car interior in MADYMO. A standard three-point seat belt and an airbag are used as restraint systems. The strain values at the placental location of the uterus of 'Expecting' for frontal impacts with 15, 30, 45 kph are predicted for various steering wheel unit configurations and the resulting distance between the steering wheel unit and the abdomen and sternum of 'Expecting'. Recommendations are made to improve safety.","PeriodicalId":417746,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Human Factors Modelling and Simulation","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114658925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Computational mechanics and LS-DYNA non-linear finite element code were used as tools in this study. All finite element models were partially validated using data available from experimental sled tests. The validated dummy-wheelchair-bus system, which was developed, allowed for quantitative assessment of injury criteria in several accident scenarios. Although backward seating was found beneficial in reducing severity of injuries during accidents, the outcome is sensitive to imperfect initial conditions during accidents. Material presented allows for detailed assessment of benefits and shortcomings of each configuration considered.","PeriodicalId":417746,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Human Factors Modelling and Simulation","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128941513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The dynamic shapes of four subjects in five activities (digging, jogging, limping, throwing, and walking) were created via 3D motion replication. The Paquet shape descriptor (PSD) was used to describe subject shapes in each frame. The unique features of dynamic human shapes were revealed from the observations of the 3D plots of PSDs. The principal component analysis was performed on the calculated PSDs and principal components (PCs) were used to characterise PSDs. The PSD calculation was then reasonably approximated by its significant projections in the eigenspace formed by PCs and represented by the corresponding projection coefficients. As such, the dynamic human shapes for each activity were described by these projection coefficients. To demonstrate potential applications of shape dynamics, a preliminary study was performed on using projection coefficients for activity classification.","PeriodicalId":417746,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Human Factors Modelling and Simulation","volume":"194 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132280345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
