The goal of the rescuer is to keep the victim alive until Emergency Medical Services arrive. The accident preparedness course, written for the untrained person and taught by local instructors, deals with situations involving machinery, manure storage facilities, grain bins, silos, pesticides, and electricity. Partici-pants are also taught how to report accidents to EMS, what to include in a first aid and pesticide safety kit and how to shut off a diesel trac-tor. They are encouraged to obtain first aid training and Cardiopul-monary Resuscitation instruction.","PeriodicalId":417302,"journal":{"name":"Agricultural Health and Safety: Recent Advances","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132650366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This report examines an example of an agricultural tractor rollover on a moderate slope and determines a stability index. Based on stability data and the kinematic analysis of a tractor turning on a slop, the paper modifies the index of static stability based on the steady-state operation of a tractor by introducing a dynamic factor. A tractor rollover was recorded on a video and stability parameters (pitch and roll angles and their rate, as well as yaw rate) were measured by stability sensors. The analysis of the video and stability data in real time showed that the index of tractor stability on a slope is significantly affected by its dynamics (e.g., angle rates and vehicle acceleration). The strong cornering of a tractor wheel and high yaw rate increase the possibility of rollover.","PeriodicalId":417302,"journal":{"name":"Agricultural Health and Safety: Recent Advances","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115042243","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the current study, the relationships between personal and significant others' attitudes concerning safety, perceptions of behavioral control, stress, habit or repetitive farming practice, and frequency of engaging in safety precautions were investigated. One hundred ninety-nine male and female farmers completed study questionnaires prior to participating in stress reduction workshops held throughout Eastern Washington during 1994-95. Results indicated that safety behaviors were influenced by different variables for respondents who had a prior history of minor injuries on the farm than for those individuals who had experienced major injuries. Methodological concerns and recommendations for future research and intervention strategies are discussed.","PeriodicalId":417302,"journal":{"name":"Agricultural Health and Safety: Recent Advances","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122796912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the contributing reasons for this is the use of chemicals. To ensure proper use of pesticides, one of the most dangerous groups of these chemicals, states require Pesticide Applicator Training for people who handle pesticides. Unfortunately, little training is available for people who have casual contact with farm chemicals such as farm wives and children. Because of the acute danger of small quantities of some of these products, as well as the chronic effects of long-term exposure, it is vitally important to promote educating these two groups. With this in mind, The University of Iowa developed an informative program to teach farm wives and children about farm chemical safety. A Farm Chemical Safety Guide was developed which provides details on organizing a program. The guide was disseminated at a training program held for farm safety commu-nity leaders.","PeriodicalId":417302,"journal":{"name":"Agricultural Health and Safety: Recent Advances","volume":"207 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114990326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The most common injuries are strains and sprains of the lower limbs and contusions of the limbs. In this study, the incidence of non-fatal tractor accidents was found not to be very high, but there are certain jobs that are relatively dangerous where tractors are used. These include dismounting and mounting the tractor, and coupling and uncoupling implements. The most dangerous work phases can be made safer with traditional countermeasures, e.g., by developing ergonomic and engineering solutions for safety and by educating tractor users. However, more emphasis in research and consulting should be put on improving safety management on farms, because the quality of management defines the safety of operation.","PeriodicalId":417302,"journal":{"name":"Agricultural Health and Safety: Recent Advances","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114671362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
