About 100% of the population has access to the availability of freshwater, but the purity of water is always concerned. The groundwater of Bangladesh is under increasing threat from overexploitation, population growth, rapid urbanization, and pollution from industries, domestic and agricultural sources. For the assessment of heavy and toxic metal contamination in shallow groundwater, the study collected 40 water samples from different stations in the middle-west part of Bangladesh. The results showed that three metals ion, viz. iron, manganese, and lead exceeded the concentration limit of WHO (2011) in most of the water samples indicating severe human health hazard. The single-factor pollution index (I i ) and compound pollution index (CPI) value of these three (3) metals were very high, i.e., much greater than 1. The other metal concentrations were found within the safe permissible ranges. The values of heavy metal pollution indices, viz. heavy metal pollution index (HMPI), heavy metal evaluation index (HMEI), degree of contamination (Cd ), Nemerow Index (NeI), and ecological risk measurement (ERI) showed that most of the water samples were found medium to high levels of contamination in the study area. The analysis results revealed that an average of 32.6%, 15.6%, and 51.8% of the water samples was found low, medium, and high risk from heavy metal, respectively. There were 20 samples found highly contaminated with heavy metals out of 40 samples. The study results revealed that both the geogenic and anthropologic activities influenced the groundwater system of the area. It suggested that the groundwater quality should go under a continuous monitoring process for sustainable water quality management in the area. The study findings could help with further planning of potential future remediation measures for policymakers.","PeriodicalId":417186,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Earth and Environmental Sciences Research","volume":"134 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133761184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The continued trend of land use land cover change in protected areas resulted in loss of a large portion of biodiversity, overexploitation by humans, transformation of natural land to human settlement, etc. In Ethiopia, the causes for land use land cover change in many protected areas are farmland expansion, deforestation, unsustainable grazing and settlement expansion, and are leading to loss of biodiversity and negative impacts of ecosystem services. In addition, Ethiopia’s protected areas entertain escalating threats and land cover changes due to human population growth, competing claims from the surrounding communities, incompatible investment, lack of environmental law enforcement, absence of complete plan and timely update for protected areas, etc. These have affected protected areas in the country namely the Bale Mountains National Park, Chocke Mountains, Babile Elephant sanctuary, Abijata Shalla Lakes National Park, Awash National Park and others. The continued land use land cover changes are aggravating ecosystem, soil and water resources degradation in mountainous protected areas while they are leading to biodiversity destruction and loss of forest cover in lowland protected areas. In order to halt and reduce the impact of land cover change on biodiversity conservation, undertaking complete land use planning and continuous monitoring of protected areas was found to be important. Similarly, integrating protected areas into the surrounding landscapes and a broader framework of national plans, promoting income generation means for communities surrounding protected areas, promoting biodiversity conservation directly linked to poverty alleviation, involving local communities and stakeholders in land use planning and sustainable management of protected areas, enhancing sound management in vulnerable mountain protected areas and restoring abandoned lands located in and around protected areas are crucial in the proper land use planning and management of protected areas. In addition, enhancing awareness creation and promoting natural resource information of protected areas and enhancing scientific study on land use land cover change pattern of protected areas are vital to undertake effective land use planning and management of protected areas in Ethiopia.","PeriodicalId":417186,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Earth and Environmental Sciences Research","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127351117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The deformation, in each outcrop, is restricted to a single stratigraphic layer bounded by undeformed flat-lying layers, eliminating the influence of slope failure. The structures are multiple liquefaction features like sand dikes, flame structures, pear-drop disturbance and downward warping of beds. The preferred interpretation is that the deformations resulted from earthquake-induced liquefaction and their existence adjacent to the Nandaprayag Fault can be related to episodic seismicity that occurred along this fault. However, more data and dating technique is needed to constrain the timing and distance to the causative seismic source. It is possible that more than one earthquake has effected the deformations.","PeriodicalId":417186,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Earth and Environmental Sciences Research","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123000294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study aimed at using Potential Ecological Risk (PER) index to characterize rivers sediments and waters for possible environmental impact. The sampling span industrial, domestic and recreational areas. The water and sediment grab samples were treated using standard procedures. The filtrate from sediment was made up to 50 cm3 mark with distilled water and used for seven heavy metals determination using atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). Contamination factor (CF) and Pollution load index (PLI) calculated for each metal in the sediments indicate moderate contaminations. However, Cd in exception showed the highest potential ecological risk factor of 42.3 in Igbokoda. PER value of the Igbokoda sediment is 45.37 while that of Apapa sediment is 6.79. The potential risk pose by Cd alone in the sediment suggests that the Igbokoda water is unsafe for recreational and other beach activities. The recommendation from the study will suggest a proper treatment of wastewater and sewages before fluxing into both the Igbokoda and Apapa water bodies","PeriodicalId":417186,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Earth and Environmental Sciences Research","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134447567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A survey of the literature indicates that most of them are handled with unsatisfactory practices that negatively impact the environment. Therefore, it is very important that they be utilized for more beneficial purposes, particularly in the context of the development of biofuels via pyrolysis technology. Due to its high carbon content, rich in lignin and low cost, empty fruit bunch (EFB) shows potential to be a good precursor for the production of biochar. The pyrolysis temperature greatly affects biochar properties and its potential usage. Many researches work on biochar have been carried out to assess its potential by investigating its characteristics. The most common thermochemical technique to produce biochar is pyrolysis, during which the organic components are decomposed at adjustable temperature in a nitrogen-limited atmosphere. The focus of this study is to identify the effect of temperature (300, 350, 400, 450 and 500 °C) on calorific value of pyrolyzed EFB derived biochar. Eight experimental runs were conducted. The results were completely analyzed by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The model was statistically significant. The factor studied which temperature was significant with p-values < 0.0001. The value of R2 was 0.9633 which indicated that the temperature showed high correlation to the calorific value of biochar from EFB pyrolysis process. A quadratic model equation was developed and employed to predict the highest theoretical calorific value. The maximum biochar calorific value was achieved at pyrolysis temperature of 500 °C. Char yield was obtained highest at 300°C around 53.36 wt% and started to decrease as temperature increase. Result of this experiment revealed that the calorific value of biochar increases as the temperature increases while the yield percentage of biochar decreases as the temperature increases. The yield of biochar decreases with temperature because of the secondary tar reactions of the volatiles, such as thermal cracking, that favors the increase of gas yield.","PeriodicalId":417186,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Earth and Environmental Sciences Research","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127737906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main sources and factors of transmission of Alveococcus in susceptible animals and the regularity of the circulation of pathogens in natural foci in the Arctic are determined. According to the results of research, they have a rather dangerous epizootic potential and at any time it is possible to aggravate the epizootic situation. Climate change that is already observed in many parts of the planet is the biggest and most horrible perspective facing our planet in near future. Adverse climate change processes are observed in Georgia too. In last decades biodiversity loss and increased natural disasters frequently take place. Scientists warn that if we will not be able to stop warming process at 1.50C we cannot be able to avoid unpredictable and irreversible consequences. Ecologists agree that enlargement of the existed reserved areas and creation of new ones will help to preserve biodiversity and mitigate climate change. They propose to enlarge the existed reserved areas up to 30% by 2030 and designate 20% of territory under strict monitoring [1]. At the same time we are sure that most of the local governments will not be happy by implementation of this idea and we believe that it must be supported and monitored by international nongovernmental organizations.","PeriodicalId":417186,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Earth and Environmental Sciences Research","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116146255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Their environmentally relevant concentrations throughout global surface waters have tampered with human populations’ drinking and recreational supplies. MCs have gained immense public health attention due to their potential health effects. Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) is the most toxic variant of the MCs. Investigations on MC-LR toxicity and detection in water signify a growing potential environmental health concern worldwide. The World Health Organization established a provisional drinking water guidance value of 1 μg/L and a provisional recreational exposure guidance value of 10 μg/L for MC-LR. This review surveys human MC exposure pathways and integrates epidemiological studies to support MCs’ critical exposure pathways. A discussion on monitoring and mitigation strategies provides a guide for policy development in adopting MCs’ regulatory levels to protect public health.","PeriodicalId":417186,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Earth and Environmental Sciences Research","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128364161","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
