Accordingly, the parameters for processing, i.e., step depth, the feed rate of the tool, spindle speed, wall angle, thickness of metal sheets and type of material were selected as input and the minimum vertical force component was selected as the model output. To train the model, a Multilayer perceptron neural network structure and feed-forward backpropagation algorithm have been employed. After testing many different artificial neural network (ANN) architectures, an optimal structure of the model i.e. 6-14-1 was obtained. The results, with a correlation relation between experiments to predicted force,-0.215 mean absolute error, show a very good agreement.","PeriodicalId":416886,"journal":{"name":"International journal of engineering. There are many techniques that have been utilized to enhance the heat transfer performance of the shell and tube heat exchangers. Air bubble injection is one of the promising and inexpensive techniques that can create turbulence in the fluids resulting in to enhancement of heat transfer characteristics of the shell and tube heat exchangers. In this paper, experimental study of heat transfer characteristics have been done by injecting air bubbles at tube inlet and throughout the tube for 0.1%v/v and 0.2%v/v Al2O3 nanoparticle concentration. Results obtained at two different injection points for both concentrations are compared with the case when no air bubble injection is done. The results showed the enhancement in the heat transfer characteristics with air bubble injection and volumetric concentration of nanoparticles. The maximum enhancement was found to be in the case where air bubbles are injected throughout the tube which is followed by the air bubble injection at the tube inlet and without air bubble injection. As the bubbles were injected throughout the tube, approximately 22-33% enhancement was observed. The overall heat transfer coefficient with injecting air bubbles throughout the tube showed an enhancement of about 12-23% and 14-25% for 0.1% and 0.2% of nanofluids.","PeriodicalId":416886,"journal":{"name":"International journal of engineering. Usually, the processes are not naturally controlled, so the use of control charts will help to reduce the variability and increase the stability of the process. In the traditional approach, control charts with fix sample size and constant sampling intervals were used to identify the changes in the process. While, control charts can be examined from different statistical and economical directions using different sampling schemes for achieving a better result. In past studies, it has been shown that np control charts show better results in detecting shifts by using variable sampling schemes but it is also important to consider how the cost of using variable sampling schemes will be, since the cost of a process depends on the parameters of the control chart. In this paper, the economic-statistical design of np control chart with variable sample size and sampling interval (VSSI) is formulated and then we compare and analyze the resulted obtained with other schemes. Results show significant improvement in terms of economic and statistical performance.","PeriodicalId":416886,"journal":{"name":"International journal of engineering. To relate the information obtained from the condition monitoring to the actual state of the system, it is usually required a stochastic model. On the other hand, considering the interactions and similarities that exist between CBM and statistical process control (SPC), the integrated models for CBM and SPC have been developed. These models apply control charts as a condition monitoring technique, and the inference about the operational states of the system is based on the collected information about the quality of the produced items. Finally, it is decided whether to implement certain type of maintenance actions. This paper describes the application of multivariate control charts as a condition monitoring technique for CBM purposes. To this end, an integrated model is developed, while it is used a chi-square control chart. Also, to determine the inspection time points, a constant hazard policy is applied.","PeriodicalId":416886,"journal":{"name":"International journal of engineering. However, low operation life of the down hole drilling motors and high rate of wear in their working elements may constrain their application due to technical and economical disadvantageousness. In this work, a high-torque modular motor is designed and used. An in-house CFD code is developed using the Roe scheme to simulate flow-field and detect location of normal shock in the supersonic wind-tunnel. In the Roe scheme, flow conditions at inner and outer sides of cell faces are determined using an upwind biased algorithm. The in-house CFD code has been parallelized using OpenMp to reduce the computational time. Also, an appropriate equation is derived to predict the optimum number of cores for running the program with different grid sizes. In the design process of the wind-tunnel, firstly geometry of the nozzle is specified by the method of characteristics. The flow in the nozzle and test section is simulated in the next step. Then, design parameters of the diffuser (convergence and divergence angles, area of the throat, and ratio of the exit area to the throat area) are determined by a trial and error method. Finally, an appropriate geometry is selected for the diffuser which satisfies all necessary criteria.","PeriodicalId":416886,"journal":{"name":"International journal of engineering. These passive cooling materials not only solve the water generating problems, but also employed in various cooling applications. The fundamental concept of radiative cooling is analysed and the performance parameters were identified to test the passive cooling ability of the designed material for water harvesting. The field of Photonics is studied which has the potential to obtain the surface temperature significantly lower than the atmospheric temperature by radiation phenomenon. Important parameters are identified to validate the performance of the proposed materials. ANSYS FLUENT is used to analyse the surface temperature for the given boundary conditions and the potential material which is capable of obtaining a significant temperature difference with respect to the ambient temperature is identified. A sandwich material is designed and its performance is evaluated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) by which we could achieve temperature difference of 15°C. To reduce the heat gain losses by conduction and convection, we designed a physical system which could maintain significant temperature difference even in the broad day-sunlight. CFD analysis of the designed system under similar boundary conditions gave satisfying results of maintaining the temperature difference of about 15°C for a prolonged period of time due to minimal heat gain losses. Later, two potential materials are manufactured and the performance parameters of these materials are characterized using U-V/Vis (Ultraviolet-Visible) and FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) Spectroscopy experiments. The results of absorption phenomenon in the U-V/Vis spectrum and the transmittance phenomenon in the FTIR spectrum of the two materials explain the reason for the passive cooling ability of materials.","PeriodicalId":416886,"journal":{"name":"International journal of engineering. Several methods have been proposed for training the WNNs. From the perspective of our research, most of these algorithms are iterative and need to adjust all the parameters of WNN. This paper proposes a one-step learning method which changes the weights between hidden layer and output layer of the network; meanwhile, the wavelet function parameters are randomly assigned and kept fixed during the training process. Besides the simplicity and speed of the proposed one-step algorithm, the experimental results verify the performance of the proposed method in terms of final model accuracy and computational time.","PeriodicalId":416886,"journal":{"name":"International journal of engineering. The performance of the membranes was evaluated in terms of flux, hydrophilicity and anti-biofouling properties. With increment of the Ag/GO from 0 to 0.1 wt.%, the pure water flux increased from 24.7 up to 54.1 kg/m2 h. The flux recovery ratio (FRR) of the membranes was performed using milk powder solution and the results illustrated that the 0.1 wt.% Ag/GO membrane had the best fouling resistance with the FRR value of 95.45%. The performance of the nanofiltration was assessed using the retention of Direct Red 16. It was indicated that the Ag/GO-PES membranes have remarkable dye removal (98.38% rejection). The anti-biofouling activities of the 0.1 wt.% Ag/GO mixed matrix membrane was also investigated using activated sludge and the results showed a notable improvement.","PeriodicalId":416886,"journal":{"name":"International journal of engineering.
