The translation itself is consistently accurate, considering that Youyang zazu is a rather obscure and difficult text. Chiara Bocci’s English translations are extremely well executed, always giving very convincing explanations in the footnotes to support her translation ideas, often reconstructing the numerous quotations contained in the original text. A text like the Youyang zazu cannot always be translated without a certain degree of doubt. But the author clearly discusses each point of the text and gives good interpretations, and considering the translatability and, sometimes, the untranslatability of this book, her work is very accurate. A note concerning a passage in the translation (p. 28): the sentence shi jie ying jie sheng hua 石劫應節生花 is translated “after a period of destruction (kalpa), a time of blossoming must follow.” Then, in the footnote, another translation is suggested “in the joints (or rather cracks) between stones, flowers must grow.” The term jie 劫 in Tang times could have the Buddhist meaning of kalpa, era, but maybe a less strict translation could be used. Moreover, the two terms ying jie 應節 could also have the meaning of “according to seasons, according to seasonal changes” Thus, I would perhaps suggest considering the translation of this passage in “[The Raven Head (the root of theAconitum) presents hair], since long time ago his plant blooms according to seasonal change,” or, alternatively, considering the given option in the footnote: “In the cracks between stones this plant blooms, according to the change of the seasons.” If one was to find a flaw in the work of Chiara Bocci, the only thing would be that the introduction could have been longer, presenting the book’s history and the author’s biography in more detail, and more in general the book’s genre, giving some account of the encyclopaedic collection in Chinese classical literature, on the history and description of Youyang zazu etc., but these and other aspects, in fact, have already been described in detail in many other researches, such as that of Carrie Elizabeth Reed, Edward Schafer and Berthold Laufer. Other scholars have produced valuable works about the Tang dynasty, which are consistently cited in the text and footnotes by Chiara Bocci. Therefore, I cannot find any other issues in this book, which is indeed a solid philological work, adding precious knowledge to some special aspects of Youyang zazu and giving us a great deal of information and inspiration about the vision of reality in Tang times.","PeriodicalId":41653,"journal":{"name":"Monumenta Serica-Journal of Oriental Studies","volume":"2677 1","pages":"243 - 249"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86896903","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The relationship between the three was more than just metaphoric – all were forms of currency with exchange value within their own spheres. In some cases, debts of money, merit, and meter could be repaid not just in kind, but also with one of the other forms of currency. An understanding of these interconnected systems leads to a deeper understanding of one aspect of Chinese literary history – namely, the importance of Buddhism in the Tang literary world – and prompts questions that shed new light on its dynamics.","PeriodicalId":41653,"journal":{"name":"Monumenta Serica-Journal of Oriental Studies","volume":"62 5","pages":"21 - 41"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72564893","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They also knew about the internal discussions going on at court and thus were able to draw a realistic picture of what had occurred and what was to be expected in the future. This and the brief descriptions found in some late Ming sources may explain the passive attitude of the court in Beijing. In a sense, they can also help us to understand why the Manila-Chinese and the Spanish government overcame the brief period of tense relations after the massacre. Another thing is that Pantoja voiced early warnings against the Dutch who had arrived in Chinese waters at around the same time. The Dutch left bad traces in several Chinese texts. Simply put, Chinese scholars quickly realized that the hongfan 红番 were greedy, treacherous, and difficult to deal with – quite in contrast to the Iberians. Jin adds, the term hongfan also came in use for the British. It is here that his book ends. Clearly, this arrangement implies a strong symbolic message, which links back to Jin’s very personal note in the avant-propos section. Finally, there is an annex with three short documents and a postscript in which the author expresses his gratitude to several colleagues and other persons. However, these parts require no discussion. What, then, can I say to round off my remarks? This is a fine collection of brilliantly written articles, based on a myriad of sources, onmeticulous research, and flavored with some new ideas. Scholars interested in the history of early Sino-Iberian relations, and especially in the history of Manila and maritime China, will certainly enjoy reading this work. In sum, it is a most welcome contribution to the field ofMacau Studies as outlined inWuZhiliang’s introduction.","PeriodicalId":41653,"journal":{"name":"Monumenta Serica-Journal of Oriental Studies","volume":"17 1","pages":"254 - 257"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86243854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It focuses in particular on the discovery’s potential importance for the study of Qing dynasty Nanjing Mandarin, while referencing its implications on the cross-cultural interactions between China and Europe. After an introduction presenting other fundamental texts compiled in Nanjing Mandarin by Western missionaries and scholars, the first section details the most commonly accepted grammatical theoretical framework for distinguishing Beijing Mandarin and Nanjing Mandarin. In the second section, the author presents the manuscript in detail, describing its purpose, its possible sources, and some of its linguistic peculiarities, particularly the lexicological, lexicographical, and grammatical features, as well as some illustrative examples of cross-cultural translations. Finally, in the third section, using the framework presented in the first, the author shows that the Dictionarium is a text mixing linguistic features from different varieties of Mandarin. As highlighted by the approach of missionary linguistics, the manuscript is a rare and important record of lexicological, lexicographical, grammatical, and romanization features of late Qing dynasty Chinese and deserves further research from both historical linguistic and cross-cultural perspectives.","PeriodicalId":41653,"journal":{"name":"Monumenta Serica-Journal of Oriental Studies","volume":"35 1","pages":"147 - 165"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74806290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
