At the transmitter, the radio-signal is mapped onto the duration of an on/off keyed optical signal, while at the fiber receiving-end each PW optical modulated sample is digitized so that the overall analog communication link is transparent. In this framework, we propose a new architecture for optical transmission of PW modulated signals, based on the reflection at the remotized antennas of a seeding signal originated at the baseband unit (BBU). Pros and cons of PWM fronthauling in reflective passive optical network (PON) are evaluated by investigating the outcomes of an in-lab experiment that implements a CRAN fronthauling of 100-MHz RF signals with single-carrier 64QAM modulation up to 20-km standard single mode fiber. Experimental results provide some room for discussion on PWM fronthauling technique.","PeriodicalId":416277,"journal":{"name":"2016 European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129130473","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of these technologies forces operators to manage two physically separated networks, one for backhaul and one for fronthaul. To solve this issue, transport networks for 5G will carry both fronthaul and backhaul traffic operating over heterogeneous data plane technologies. Such an integrated fronthaul/backhaul (denoted as 5G-Crosshaul) transport network will be software-controlled to adapt to the fluctuating capacity demand of the new generation air interfaces. Based on a proposed data- and control-plane architecture for 5G-Crosshaul, we propose a frame format common to both fronthaul and backhaul traffic as well as a corresponding abstraction of the forwarding behavior of the network elements. The common frame format and the forwarding abstraction define the information to be exchanged at the southbound interface (SBI) of the 5G-Crosshaul Control Infrastructure (XCI). This paper derives requirements for the SBI from 5G use cases.","PeriodicalId":416277,"journal":{"name":"2016 European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC)","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125926380","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to the specific network architecture, a macro-cell base station (MBS) shares the same spectral resources with a number of small cell base stations (SBSs), resulting in increased co-channel interference (CCI). The efficient management of CCI has been studied extensively in the literature and various dynamic channel assignment (DCA) schemes have been proposed. However, the majority of these schemes consider a uniform approach for the users without taking into account the different quality requirements of each application. In this work, we propose an interference aware channel segregation DCA mechanism that incorporates the impact of differentiated users' Quality of Service (QoS). An initial mechanism design is presented and its application to a specific use case is discussed in order to evaluate the potential challenges of the proposed scheme.","PeriodicalId":416277,"journal":{"name":"2016 European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC)","volume":"28 12","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133783032","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This endangers the efficiency of Wi-Fi and negatively affect the users' experience. The problem is especially pressing in dense areas (e.g. shopping centers) where Wi-Fi channel assignment is more likely to be uncoordinated and the working environment of Wi-Fi Access Points (APs) has become increasingly time-variant. As a result, the availability of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and network virtualization technologies has motivated the use of centralized resource management as a solution. This paper provides an algorithm for channel assignment functionality in the context of SDN-based centralized resource management, which captures the live status of a Wi-Fi network and is capable of optimising the Radio Frequency (RF) channel assignment process. The APs' network arrangement, the current assignment of the channels and the characteristics of the RF channels in IEEE 802.11 have all been taken into account in the proposed model. The performance of the proposed model in terms of the level of the interference, the spectral efficiency at each AP and the Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR) at the user-side is evaluated through simulation and compared against state of the art solutions.","PeriodicalId":416277,"journal":{"name":"2016 European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC)","volume":"573 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115276294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This hard deployment and management border on compute, memory, network and storage resources is either fixed or quite limited in expandability during design time and in practice remains so throughout machine lifetime as subsystem upgrades are seldomely employed. The impact of this rigidity has well known ramifications in terms of lower system resource utilization, costly upgrade cycles and degraded energy proportionality. In the dReDBox project we take on the challenge of breaking the server boundaries through materialization of the concept of disaggregation. The basic idea of the dReDBox architecture is to use a core of high-speed, low-latency opto-electronic fabric that will bring physically distant components more closely in terms of latency and bandwidth. We envision a powerful software-defined control plane that will match the flexibility of the system to the resource needs of the applications (or VMs) running in the system. Together the hardware, interconnect, and software architectures will enable the creation of a modular, vertically-integrated system that will form a datacenter-in-a-box.","PeriodicalId":416277,"journal":{"name":"2016 European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC)","volume":"33 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114110683","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Optimization of energy usage depends on modelling power consumption. A model-based simulation must consider parameters that depend on the device used, the operating system, and the distributed application under study. A realistic simulation thus depends on knowledge regarding how and when devices consume energy. Direct measurement in wireless sensors is a common approach to evaluate the power consumed by the embedded devices in their different execution states. This paper presents an approach to direct measurement of consumed energy. We present the architecture and the measurement process that were implemented. Details are given regarding the setup of the experimental tests, and a discussion of the results hints at which architecture is the best for each application under study. The presented methodology can be easily extended to new architectures and applications, to streamline the process of building realistic models of power consumption.","PeriodicalId":416277,"journal":{"name":"2016 European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129670072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lattice codes suggest a common view of channel and source coding and new tools for the analysis of information network problems. Several constructions have been proposed to build these lattices, some of which are based on multi-level coding and multistage decoding such as constructions D and πD. Soft-decision decoders corresponding to the different nested error-correcting codes used to construct such lattices need at each stage the computation of a soft input, namely Log- Likelihood Ratios. In this paper, we give an efficient computation of LLRs based on Jacobi theta functions for three different types of constructions; Binary construction D, Quaternary construction D and Binary construction πD.","PeriodicalId":416277,"journal":{"name":"2016 European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126864264","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The received signals at the relay and destination undergo independent but not necessarily identical Nakagami-m fading. Analytical expressions for the exact and asymptotic outage probability and the average bit error probability of various digital modulation schemes are derived. The analysis quantifies the impact of channel parameters for the desired and interfering links on the performance of interference-limited dual-hop relaying systems. Various numerically evaluated and computer simulation results are presented to corroborate the proposed analysis.","PeriodicalId":416277,"journal":{"name":"2016 European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC)","volume":"103 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114334599","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This disparity is notable both in rural areas where the operator return on investment limits coverage, as well as in low-income, urban areas where citizens cannot afford Internet prices. For the first time, a systematic comparison between value network configurations is performed to bridge the digital divide. This aims to identify network technologies and operator revenue models that minimize network costs, guarantee levels of market competition, and maximize service affordability to users. Multiple network technologies are assessed including publish-subscribe networking, edge caching as well as IEEE and 3GPP wireless access. As a result, three configurations are defined lead by a WISP, a community operator, and a MNO, respectively. Although the costs of the three operators might be at a similar level, it is the investment pay back time that determines its viability.","PeriodicalId":416277,"journal":{"name":"2016 European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130737391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
