Previously, realtime MPEG decoding could only be achieved by using special-purpose MPEG or video chips, with \"programmability\" either nonexistent or limited to low-level firmware. In this paper, we describe how synergistic software and hardware optimizations allow us to implement realtime, high-fidelity MPEG video and audio decompression in a software video player written in C, running on a PA-RISC microprocessor in the entry-level HP712 workstations. The PA-7100LC microprocessor described here is a fully-compliant PA-RISC 1.1 general purpose processor with a few generic instructions added to speedup parallel arithmetic on subword (16-bit) data.","PeriodicalId":415918,"journal":{"name":"Digest of Papers. However, current information systems provide inadequate functionality for users to efficiently and effectively search and use the information made available. Users are faced with a vast information space apparently in disarray. Assuming current client-server information system architecture, we argue in this paper that more functionality is needed on the information client side. We describe an information client prototype that supports (1) the use of object technology to model the information space, (2) declarative querying as a complement to navigational search, (3) uniform access and integration of data from diverse sources, and (4) user-specified and transparent caching that is integrated with permanent local storage of remote data. We also identify the needed support from the server side to better achieve these capabilities.","PeriodicalId":415918,"journal":{"name":"Digest of Papers. COMPCON'95. The InfoPad's main features are: portability, continuous network connectivity using a high-bandwidth radio link, pen input with handwriting recognition, audio input with speech recognition, full-motion video playback with synchronized audio, text/graphics display. The InfoPad's unique input and output characteristics offer challenges and opportunities for user interface design. We have implemented an API for network access to audio, pen, graphics, and video data; we have also implemented speech and handwriting recognizers along with programming interfaces and toolkits. We are prototyping applications and user interfaces to explore how handwriting and voice recognition may best be used together. We believe that the lessons we will learn can be applied to other multi-modal platforms.","PeriodicalId":415918,"journal":{"name":"Digest of Papers. COMPCON'95. This technology has its roots in the telecommunications industry and its use in the desktop systems has created some interesting technical challenges. This paper explores limitations with traditional approaches to video conferencing and then introduces an object based approach which leverages built-in platform functionality. If utilizes a mostly software strategy along with the creation of a digital compression camera. The camera integrates video compression hardware with the optics and attaches to existing systems over a pervasive interface. The result is interoperable, standards based video conferencing at dramatically lower price points.","PeriodicalId":415918,"journal":{"name":"Digest of Papers. COMPCON'95.
