Marshall gained initial success: both Chiang and Mao seemed favorable to the cease-fire agreement. Marshall's efforts to deal with the two power-corrupted leaders, however, proved futile since the two parties had different political agendas. Full-scale civil war broke out in the summer of 1946 and Marshall announced the failure of his mission in January 1947. This article indicates the aim of the mission was manifestly unattainable, mitigated his lack of success to a valiant attempt to achieve the impossible.","PeriodicalId":41429,"journal":{"name":"Chinese Historical Review","volume":"27 1","pages":"32 - 49"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/1547402X.2020.1788865","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42555800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lam concludes in Chapter 5 that emotion is intrinsically exterior and spatial by invoking Martin Heidegger’s discussion of “here” and “yonder.” More significantly, he applies this imagery of spatialized emotion to Lu Xun (1881–1936)’s famous metaphor of China being a closed “iron house.” This author points out that what entraps Lu Xun was not cannibalistic tradition but “the objectification of space set before him,” the alleged “awakened” one (p. 234). According to the author, we are all locked out of this iron house. Ambitiously drawing upon the studies of literature, philosophy, and anthropology/ritual studies, Lam successfully brings the literary representation of emotion in premodern Chinese literature and theater to the fore, highlighting the spatialized character of emotion in both print and theatricality and the dynamics between performers and spectators. The book enormously contributes to the reader’s understanding of traditional Chinese aesthetics, its cultural production, and the importance of spatialized emotion in Chinese cultural representation. I have two suggestions, however. First, while discussing early modern Chinese theater buildings, the author could have also considered the theater with one-sided stage inside native associations, huiguan, in addition to temple and teahouse theaters; Second, when discussing the Chinese theatrical notion of “putting oneself in the place of someone else,” the possibility of full empathy of the characters, or impossibility thereof, and the self-reflexive mockery of Chinese performers, the author should have benefited a lot from modern theater theorists and practitioners Bertolt Brecht and Konstantin Stanislavski.","PeriodicalId":41429,"journal":{"name":"Chinese Historical Review","volume":"27 1","pages":"89 - 91"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/1547402X.2020.1789280","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47630549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although, I do wish Schlesinger could elaborate more on these discrepancies. From the perspective of environmental history, this book essentially tells the history of parks and preserves under Qing rule. From the perspective of Chinese history, it provides stories of those unknown and forgotten groups. Both are well achieved, though the author jumps between accounts of narratives to the theories of environmental study, sometimes making the book difficult to follow. It is a very enjoyable read. For the first time in English, this book offers rich information on the minor ethnic groups in Qing’s frontier. It argues that U.S. presence in China in the said era concentrated on commercial activities in the treaty ports, and American commercial interests and protection over American commercial community there was the main focus of U.S. relations with China; and that free-lance resident merchants like the Knight brothers played a key role in defining American presence in China, especially in commerce, consular service, and the contour of expatriate foreign community, making U.S. power in China more “soft” or non-governmental due to a weak official presence. As the first research on the Knight brothers in Niuzhuang, this article fills a gap in the field of nineteenth-century U.S.-China relations.","PeriodicalId":41429,"journal":{"name":"Chinese Historical Review","volume":"27 1","pages":"1 - 31"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/1547402X.2020.1788864","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45964699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
