This paper investigates whether investors were compensated for the tax burden of equity securities over the period between 1913 and 2006. Taxes on equity securities vary over time due to changes in dividend and capital gains tax rates and due to changes in corporate payout policies. Equity taxes also vary across firms due to persistent differences in propensities to pay dividends. The results indicate an economically plausible and statistically significant tax capitalization over time and cross-sectionally. Dividend growth models and international CAPM suggest a significant decline in the equity premium, especially in emerging markets. Consistent with this reduction in the equity premium in the long run, there is a positive short-term price reaction to the switch. Further analysis of trading turnover supports the notion that electronic trading enhances the liquidity and informativeness of stock markets, leading to a reduction in the cost of capital.","PeriodicalId":414252,"journal":{"name":"AFA 2004 San Diego Meetings (Archive)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126342491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When Andersen clients issue seasoned equity, we find that the negative reaction to SEO announcements is two percent worse for SEOs audited by Andersen versus other Big Five firms. A median firm in our sample loses $31.4 million more than a non-Andersen client. This result supports the argument that the certifying and monitoring role of auditors is valuable to clients. We do not find any unusual underpricing for SEOs or for IPO firms audited by Arthur Andersen. However, we do find that Andersen clients suffered significant value losses (approximately two percent) surrounding two key events: the admission of error by Andersen's CEO and the announcement of the criminal indictment against Andersen. We find that these results are driven by the large firms in our sample implying that only large firms' stock is affected by the deteriorating reputation of Andersen.","PeriodicalId":414252,"journal":{"name":"AFA 2004 San Diego Meetings (Archive)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123794644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We find that because the model entails idiosyncratic consumption risk which is higher than the aggregate consumption risk, the model helps lower the investor risk aversion needed to explain the mean equity premiums. In addition, because the model also allows for habit formation that disentangles intertemporal substitution from investor risk aversion, the model can resolve the riskfree rate puzzle. Further, as the timevarying individual investor risk aversion and the re-distribution of wealth among heterogeneous investors are contributing factors to the time-varying equity premiums, the model explains larger portions of the long-horizon predictability for many countries' equity markets and the world market portfolio than the world representative-agent model. In contrast, the power utility model with or without idiosyncratic consumption risk fails to explain the level of the real riskfree rate or the predictability of returns.","PeriodicalId":414252,"journal":{"name":"AFA 2004 San Diego Meetings (Archive)","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132244573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The model generalizes Tauchen and Pitts' (1983) MDH model by capturing possible interactions among securities. In our model, both price changes and trading volume are governed by three kinds of mutually independent variables: common factor variables, latent information variables and idiosyncratic variables. Despite its similarity to Hasbrouck and Seppi's (2001) model in terms of the form, the model extraordinarily allows us to identify the cause of interactions among securities by decomposing factor loadings into constant and random components. Three key implications are reached from our model. First, common factor structures in returns and trading volume stem from information flows. Second, returns' common factors are not related to trading volume's common factors. This implication directly opposes Hasbrouck and Seppi's (2001) assumption. Finally, cross-firm variations of returns and volume respectively rely on underlying latent information flows. The positive relation between return volatility and volume also results only from underlying latent information flows. Thus, common factor structures in returns and trading volume have no additional explanatory power in cross-firm variations and the positive return volatility-volume relationship. We fit the model for intraday data of Dow Jones 30 stocks using the EM algorithm. The results support specifications of our model. The empirical results demonstrate 3-factor structures in returns and trading volume, respectively. All 30 stocks in our sample are governed by at least one common factor. This fact implies that our model outperforms Tauchen and Pitts' (1983) model because their model is a special case of our model without the presence of common factors. We also show that after controlling the effect of information flows, persistence in return variance disappears.","PeriodicalId":414252,"journal":{"name":"AFA 2004 San Diego Meetings (Archive)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133644624","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over the sample period, average fund returns net of fees approximately equal the S&P 500 although there is a large degree of heterogeneity among fund returns. Returns persist strongly across funds raised by individual private equity partnerships. The returns also improve with partnership experience. Better performing funds are more likely to raise follow-on funds and raise larger funds than funds that perform poorly. This relationship is concave so that top performing funds do not grow proportionally as much as the average fund in the market. At the industry level, we show that market entry in the private equity industry is cyclical. Funds (and partnerships) started in boom times are less likely to raise follow-on funds, suggesting that these funds subsequently perform worse. Aggregate industry returns are lower following a boom, but most of this effect is driven by the poor performance of new entrants, while the returns of established funds are much less affected by these industry cycles. Several of these results differ markedly from those for mutual funds.","PeriodicalId":414252,"journal":{"name":"AFA 2004 San Diego Meetings (Archive)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125956730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The stock returns are predictable, but the predictive variables are only periodically observable with noise. We obtain the investor's value function in an explicit form. The theoretical results are then used to study an empirical model after calibration. We show that lack of continuous or precise observation of the predictive variables has a large impact on the optimal trading strategy. We demonstrate how information value changes with risk aversion, investment horizon, observation error volatility and other parameters. In addition, we find that although the benefit of incorporating predictability is significantly reduced due to the periodic and noisy observation, the cost of ignoring predictability is still substantial.","PeriodicalId":414252,"journal":{"name":"AFA 2004 San Diego Meetings (Archive)","volume":"439 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120939276","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Taking this view, we find decisive evidence of a shift in the inflation process during the Volcker experiment reflecting the Federal Reserve's enforcement of an anti-inflationary interest rate policy consistent with the Taylor (1993) rule. Subsequent to the regime shift, inflation and real interest rates move together, especially in the long run, contradicting both the Fisher hypothesis and the presence of Mundell-Tobin effects. Contrary to conventional wisdom, today's yield curve is not informative about expected inflation and yields now command a significant inflation risk premium suggesting yet another violation of the Fisher hypothesis.","PeriodicalId":414252,"journal":{"name":"AFA 2004 San Diego Meetings (Archive)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115382289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, I view the principal components analysis as feature extraction step, and then estimate the factors as the driving forces of the principal components. This estimation procedure identifies two sources of underlying risk which can be captured by five empirical factors. This new set of factors outperforms the existing benchmarks in explaining cross-sectional returns, and it can be well explained by the commonly used macroeconomic variables. In particular, the Fama-French three factors leave out a significant part of the risk information that this new set of factors proxy for, indicating an omitted variable problem when use Fama-French factors as a benchmark. The additional risk information captured by the new set of factors is not the momentum factor, suggesting at the bottom line that it is not equivalent to the currently adopted Fama-French and momentum four factors. As an alternative risk benchmark, this new set of factors suggests that the seasoned equity offering firms do not underperform in the long run, providing support for the bad-model argument of Fama (1998).","PeriodicalId":414252,"journal":{"name":"AFA 2004 San Diego Meetings (Archive)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125344125","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there may be situations where constraints imposed by market institutions dominate strategic agent behavior. We use data from the London Stock Exchange to test a simple model in which minimally intelligent agents place orders to trade at random. The model treats the statistical mechanics of order placement, price formation, and the accumulation of revealed supply and demand within the context of the continuous double auction and yields simple laws relating order-arrival rates to statistical properties of the market. We test the validity of these laws in explaining cross-sectional variation for 11 stocks. The model explains 96% of the variance of the gap between the best buying and selling prices (the spread) and 76% of the variance of the price diffusion rate, with only one free parameter. We also study the market impact function, describing the response of quoted prices to the arrival of new orders. The nondimensional coordinates dictated by the model approximately collapse data from different stocks onto a single curve. This work is important from a practical point of view, because it demonstrates the existence of simple laws relating prices to order flows and, in a broader context, suggests there are circumstances where the strategic behavior of agents may be dominated by other considerations.","PeriodicalId":414252,"journal":{"name":"AFA 2004 San Diego Meetings (Archive)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114742975","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
