Considering various performance parameters such as average hop distance, adoptability of self routing, and flexibility on the number of nodes, we choose the generalized shuffle network (GSN) as a building block for the ATM switch design. To improve the throughput of the switch, a layering strategy called weaved GSN (WGSN) is adopted in our switch design. The performance of WGSN is studied under uniform and full load conditions through analytic modeling and simulation. The analysis and simulation results show that the proposed switch has better throughput and cell loss performance when compared with other banyan-based switch architectures known so far.","PeriodicalId":414137,"journal":{"name":"IEEE GLOBECOM 1998 (Cat. We consider the relative merits of code division multiplexing (CDM) and time division multiplexing (TDM) for this use. It is assumed that two satellites would be used to cover CONUS to supply diversity as well as multiple same-frequency terrestrial transmitters in selected urban areas. Initially we consider systems with no polarization reuse but then show the improvement that polarization reuse and other techniques to isolate transmission paths brings. But this brings the added expense of multiple down converters. This paper, after reviewing the current level in maturity of the voice recognition technology, identifies its application areas in terms of telecommunications services. Various trials of voice recognition applications of an original nature made by us are then disclosed. The issues and their solutions experienced through the trials are also discussed. Our enhancement stems from the fact that we consider delay in determining the appropriate route for an ATM call. The paper presents two new path selection algorithms based on two different delay accumulation methods, namely the simple (additive) method, and the asymptotic method. The delay based path selection algorithm is achieved by adopting a constrained shortest path algorithm which optimizes two metrics simultaneously in contrast to Dijkstra's algorithm that optimizes only one. The execution times of these two algorithms are also compared and quantified based on the results of an experimental study. Using an analytical model we demonstrate the performance gain by adopting a delay-based routing procedure in simple network configurations in terms of the number of crankbacks. Our network configurations and traffic loading patterns showed that up to 36% less crankbacks can be obtained when adopting a delay-sensitive routing scheme as opposed to a simple shortest-path algorithm.","PeriodicalId":414137,"journal":{"name":"IEEE GLOBECOM 1998 (Cat. That paper also contains asymptotic calculations of average durations of such outages for the case of log-normal fading, based on the theory of level crossings, for the case when the signal is assumed to be a stationary stochastic process with smooth sample paths, i.e., its autocorrelation function is assumed to have a second derivative at the origin. In this work, we consider the popular autocorrelation function proposed by Gudmundson (1991) for lognormal shadow fading, for which the smoothness assumption above does not hold. Under some general assumptions, we show that the Poisson clumping heuristic (PCH) can be applied to provide approximations to the distribution of the outage time for both kinds of autocorrelation functions, thereby enabling us to obtain more general results than before.","PeriodicalId":414137,"journal":{"name":"IEEE GLOBECOM 1998 (Cat. Distance learning and teletraining applications are strongly based on distributed multimedia information. In this paper an architecture of a scaleable corporate distance education system and the steps taken to guarantee different levels of quality of service (QoS) to the users are presented. The key components of the system are described in detail. The communication and middleware infrastructure as key elements of the architecture have to provide end-to-end quality of service support to the applications via application programming interfaces (APIs). Therefore, related architectural approaches and QoS-aware communication and middleware APIs are compared.
