We employ the correlated subcarrier model to analyze the average probability of error of the system when operating in a frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel, and compare the results with those obtained when the MC-RAKE system operates without the MMSE. The new system is shown to successfully suppress near-far multiple access interference without requiring knowledge of other users' spreading codes, timing, or phase information, while, at the same time, yielding a diversity combining gain. Also, the tradeoff among the number of subcarriers, the number of multipaths, and the number of weights in the MMSE receiver is shown in the results.","PeriodicalId":414137,"journal":{"name":"IEEE GLOBECOM 1998 (Cat. By using the spreading codes in both the time and frequency domains, the proposed system has a good ability to tolerate high interference from other users. The reason is that the code orthogonality between different users can be well preserved in both domains, especially in the time invariant and slow fading case. In this paper, we evaluate the effectiveness of inter-vehicle communication systems using the traffic flow simulator including inter-vehicle communications developed by the authors. The design of network management systems involves the cooperation of multiple groups of people within and across organisations. Hence it may be useful to adopt a formal design methodology. However, such a methodology needs to be flexible enough to accommodate a wide variety of design models and notations in this multidisciplinary area of research. The poor resultant SNR/sub sig/ of the recovered signal limits the applicability of these methods. Two novel chaotic coding/decoding strategies based on artificial neural networks (ANN) and radial basis functions (RBF) have been developed and the resultant performance has been assessed. The results indicate that the nonlinear predictor (ANN-RBF-NLP) offers performance independent of the channel SNR (for SNR>10 dB) and offers 4 dB improved SNR/sub sig/ compared to the LMS. Pseudo-chaotic sequences generated using an ANN and estimated in a dynamic feedback manner (ANN-RBF-DF) have resulted in a system with an SNR/sub sig/ that is linearly dependent on the channel SNR and offering for example 20 dB improved SNR/sub sig/ compared to the LMS at a channel SNR of 40 dB.","PeriodicalId":414137,"journal":{"name":"IEEE GLOBECOM 1998 (Cat. NOR.WEB has shown that communication is possible in the HF region of the spectrum, above 1 MHz. One of the many problems associated with the HF frequency range is ingress of HF broadcast carriers, which can cause significant interference with the powerline communication signal. This paper describes the results of measurements made on the mains network to characterise the interference encountered at these frequencies. HF ingress was indeed one of the most significant sources of interference discovered. Hence hardware and software were developed to identify these signals on the network, and to collect statistics on their distribution. The paper also discusses the distribution of their amplitude, and also their distribution with frequency and time-of-day. The results are used to give limits (to a given statistical confidence level) on the interference encountered by a powerline telecommunication system, as a function of its bandwidth.","PeriodicalId":414137,"journal":{"name":"IEEE GLOBECOM 1998 (Cat. In this paper, we develop a general method to evaluate outage probabilities without restrictions based on Pade approximations (PAs). Results show that imposing restrictions on the channel model, such as the Ricean specular parameter, can lead to large errors in the outage probability. The PA method is applicable to both the forward link and the reverse link and is extremely efficient due to the use of residues or saddle point integration. Pade approximations allow the use of any fading or shadowing models given the moments of each distribution. In addition, this new method includes the effects of complex AWGN. Both power control (PCL) and channel estimation (CHE) imperfections were considered. The canceller is shown to work well in moderate PCL error conditions. In fading, the hybrid canceller performance compares favorably to the successive interference canceller. The capacity gain of this canceller is estimated to be in the order of 1-5 times relative to the conventional correlator. However, the EDF scheme considers only the infinite buffer case and is susceptible to buffer overflow when finite buffer is considered. Since most of these applications, use TCP as the transport layer protocol, the key to their success largely depends on the effectiveness of the TCP protocol. We investigate the performance of TCP in terms of effective throughput in an HFC network environment using different load conditions and network buffer sizes. We find that TCP experiences low throughput as a result of the well known problem of ACK compression.
