{"title":"A progressive method of face clustering for mobile phone applications","authors":"S. Velusamy, Pratibha Moogi","doi":"10.1109/SPA.2016.7763613","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/SPA.2016.7763613","url":null,"abstract":"We present a progressive method of applying easy-to-hard grouping technique that applies increasingly sophisticated feature descriptors and classifiers on reducing number of image samples from each of the iteratively generated clusters. The primary goal of the proposed approach is to design a cost effective face clustering method to deploy on low-power devices like Mobile phones, while handling various face related real-world challenges like head-pose variations, expressions, make-up, etc. Initially, the proposed method applies K-Means technique with relatively large K value on LBP features of the input faces to create high precision clusters, which may have low recall rates (faces of a single person falls into multiple clusters). The multiple clusters of same individuals generated are then progressively merged by applying sophisticated features like Gabor filters, Gabor jets and sub-space modelling strategies. The method considers reduced number of non-redundant faces from each of the intermediate clusters to the higher stages of clustering to achieve a compute efficient solution that is suitable for mobile devices. Our experiments on the standard databases like YouTube Celebrities, Multi-Pie, Extended Yale-B, CK+, MindReading and internally collected images/videos from mobile phone albums demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed approach as compared to state-of-the-art methods as well as an existing solution on a flagship mobile phone.","PeriodicalId":413894,"journal":{"name":"2016 Signal Processing: Algorithms, Architectures, Arrangements, and Applications (SPA)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133700862","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More recently, short-distance wireless communication has also been discussed as a way to connect embedded electronic systems in industrial applications. Such systems have to work under stringent real-time constraints. For industrial in-door environments, we can a changing environment that produces serious flaws in wireless communication links occasionally. Therefore we explored new ways of forward error correction, which are fast in case of low error densities, but can deliver an enhanced multi-error detection capability if needed. A scheme of step-wise error correction using single error correction (SEC) step-by-step is feasible only, if double, triple and (with a high probability) multi-bit errors and errors on parity bits are detected and not mapped into false single bit error corrections. The paper give shows ways for expanding SEC schemes towards double and triple error detection, also including the vulnerability of extra parity bits.","PeriodicalId":413894,"journal":{"name":"2016 Signal Processing: Algorithms, Architectures, Arrangements, and Applications (SPA)","volume":"42 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114090855","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, a novel spectral equalization method of the room acoustic conditions is introduced. On the basis of the frequency response of the room, a system for room acoustics compensation based on eight-band equalizer is proposed. The system settings depend on music genre. In order to acquire room acoustic characteristics, a series of measurements are performed. Reverberation times and frequency responses of four rooms are acquired. White noise serving as reference signal and audio excerpts belonging to six music genres are utilized in measurements. For audio normalization LUFS (Loudness Unit, referenced to Full Scale) scale is employed, therefore all audio tracks are adjusted to −23 LUFS signal level. Recorded signals in the listener's receiver position are then used to obtain room equalization characteristics. A comparison between the results obtained with the method introduced and a traditional graphic equalizer, based on preliminary subjective tests, is given. It is shown that room equalization based on the method proposed is effective in room acoustic deficiencies improvement.","PeriodicalId":413894,"journal":{"name":"2016 Signal Processing: Algorithms, Architectures, Arrangements, and Applications (SPA)","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123919251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The obtained values can be used for determining whether two points are close to each other or to define weights for a filter concentrated around a central element. While there are measures of proximity, neither of them was defined with a such use in mind, mostly concentrating on problem of an optimization. The idea is to turn the Euclidean distance between two points into a measure of how close (or far) two points are from each other, basing on two given ranges. The function was mostly obtained by a theoretical analysis supported with a mathematical calculation and examples of use. As it was proven in the work, the obtained function can be implemented not only to measure proximity, but also as a flexible kernel for image filters, allowing for blurring or edge-detection.","PeriodicalId":413894,"journal":{"name":"2016 Signal Processing: Algorithms, Architectures, Arrangements, and Applications (SPA)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127700170","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed methodology for selecting the most relevant wavelet coefficients is based on maximizing the matching between the auditory excitation scalograms associated with the original and the modeled signal correspondingly. The major advantage of this method is that the wavelet packet dictionary is perceptually optimized for each signal segment. It is obtained to reduce the number of the coefficients required to achieve a given perceptual distortion. Flexibility of the presented algorithm gives a possibility to change bitrate depending on the transmission channel limitation. Objective evaluation of the reconstructed audio signals by PEMO-Q model and comparison with the modern popular audio encoders such as Opus and Vorbis is provided. Received results show the high quality of the reconstructed signal of the proposed audio/speech coder.","PeriodicalId":413894,"journal":{"name":"2016 Signal Processing: Algorithms, Architectures, Arrangements, and Applications (SPA)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125681467","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The influence of utilizing a voice activity detection in speech signals on the accuracy of the automatic speech recognition (ASR) system is presented. The examined methods of voice activity detection are based on acoustic and visual modalities. The problem of detecting the voice activity in clean and noisy speech is considered. The speech signal was recorded in a real-life scenario in an office-like environment with the babble noise generated by the loudspeakers at different levels. The proposed method of visual voice activity detection is aimed at enhancing the accuracy of ASR when the ratio of signal to noise is low. The numerals in English language are used as speech material and Word Error Rate (WER) is employed for the evaluation purposes.","PeriodicalId":413894,"journal":{"name":"2016 Signal Processing: Algorithms, Architectures, Arrangements, and Applications (SPA)","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114688808","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Particle weighting is based on color histograms computed in the iHLS color space. Particle computations are parallelized with CUDA framework. The algorithm was tested on various GPU devices: a desktop GPU card, a mobile chipset and two embedded GPU platforms. The processing speed depending on the number of particles and the size of a tracked object was measured. The aim of experiments was to assess the performance of the parallel algorithm and to test whether the currently available GPU devices are capable of real-time tracking of large moving objects in video streams from surveillance cameras.","PeriodicalId":413894,"journal":{"name":"2016 Signal Processing: Algorithms, Architectures, Arrangements, and Applications (SPA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130590879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its attractiveness lies in the minimal invasiveness of the MRI modality and also in the fact that vessels can be visualized without application of any tracer agent. MRA however is an expensive procedure and thus it is often replaced by the invasive, although less expensive, computer tomography. Due to the contrast enhancement, CT angiography performs better at revealing fine details of anomalies in vessels geometry, such as stenosis. This paper presents a framework for simulating realistic MR angiography images and provides quantitative assessment of reliability of MRA sequences in reproducing correct level of renal and carotid stenosis.","PeriodicalId":413894,"journal":{"name":"2016 Signal Processing: Algorithms, Architectures, Arrangements, and Applications (SPA)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115304312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
