Localization has been a major challenge in such networks because without finding the position of the sensor that is reporting sensed data, the reported data will not be useful. In this paper, we survey some of the existing localization techniques and propose a new algorithm for large scale networks that minimizes both localization error and power consumption. We also evaluate the performance of these algorithms using the network simulator (NS-2) measuring several metrics such as energy and localization error while varying a number of simulation parameters such as the number of sensors, the area size, etc. Results show that significant enhancement is obtained with the proposed algorithm.","PeriodicalId":413534,"journal":{"name":"2012 19th International Conference on Telecommunications (ICT)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116946205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mobiles are grouped into collaborative clusters using a low-complexity clustering algorithm. In each cluster, collaboration is implemented by having a cluster head multicast the content to other cluster members using a short-range wireless communication technology. The cluster heads receive the data on the long-range LTE links either via unicasting or multicasting. LTE scheduling is taken into account on the long range transmissions. The proposed approach is compared to the non-collaborative scenario. Results show that the proposed approach leads reduced energy consumption, enhanced video quality (reduction of loss distortion), and bandwidth savings.","PeriodicalId":413534,"journal":{"name":"2012 19th International Conference on Telecommunications (ICT)","volume":"233 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122093149","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, a large number of small cells is in general more energy efficient than macrocells since less power is required to combat path loss and get across the wireless medium. However, in current network configurations these two types of cells have to coexist over the same spectrum because existing cellular systems are mainly based on macrocells and additional bandwidth for small cell deployments is scarce and too expensive to acquire. In this context, this contribution investigates an underlay cognitive communication technique which exploits interference alignment across multiple antennas in order to mitigate the interference of small cell User Terminals (UTs) towards the macrocell Base Station (BS). More specifically, three techniques for aligning interference are investigated, namely static, coordinated and un-coordinated. The system performance is evaluated and compared based on sum-rate capacity, primary rate protection ratio and primary to secondary rate ratio.","PeriodicalId":413534,"journal":{"name":"2012 19th International Conference on Telecommunications (ICT)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116845078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper investigates the discrete multi-tone (DMT) transmission over 50-meter step-index POF (SI-POF) based on an experimental system. The system adopts a digital storage oscilloscope (DSO) and processes the data off-line, which is the most common solution in the POF researches. We first study the problem of effective number of bits (ENOB) in the DSO's analog-to-digital converter (ADC). Then we investigate the optimum configuration of the DMT transmission in terms of subcarrier number selection, clipping and ADC quantization effect mitigation. The proposed method of selecting optimum configuration can be easily applied to any other DMT over POF systems.","PeriodicalId":413534,"journal":{"name":"2012 19th International Conference on Telecommunications (ICT)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117005578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most existing work on resource allocation does not fully consider all the influential factors for such systems. In the paper, we formulate the optimization problem for resource allocation, including relay selection, subcarrier assignment, and power allocation under a total power constraints and users' quality of serves (QoS) requirements. Since the optimal solution is complex to obtain, a suboptimal solution by making continuous relaxation and solving the dual problem is proposed. Numerical results show that our proposed algorithm can achieve superior capacity performance and low otage probability due to allocating the subcarriers and the power efficiently.","PeriodicalId":413534,"journal":{"name":"2012 19th International Conference on Telecommunications (ICT)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124577015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To femtocell, hybrid access mode is a comprise access mode that operates between close access mode and open access mode. With this kind of access mode, not only the pre-registered users are able to access it, un-registered users could also gain benefits as long as there is available resources. In this paper, we propose a novel access control algorithm based on hybrid access mode. Simulation results show that this algorithm can decrease the outage rate of macro users without causing too much signaling overhead.","PeriodicalId":413534,"journal":{"name":"2012 19th International Conference on Telecommunications (ICT)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129436698","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Considering two widely accepted Rayleigh links with Jakes' spectrum, a first-order autoregressive model AR(1) is used to approximate the cascade of both links. A standard estimation algorithm is the Kalman filter. In this paper, we keep the choice of the AR(1)-Kalman filter, but we show that the method usually exploited in the literature to calculate the AR(1)-model parameter presents some disappointing results. We propose other values of the AR(1)-model parameter to improve the channel estimation, based on an off-line minimization of the asymptotic mean square error MSE for a given Doppler and signal to noise ratio. The simulation results show a considerable gain in terms of MSE of the well-tuned Kalman-based channel estimator, especially for the most common scenario of slow-fading channel.","PeriodicalId":413534,"journal":{"name":"2012 19th International Conference on Telecommunications (ICT)","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129890384","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
