Direct readings from a major artery is considered the gold standard. However, intra-arterial cannulation is associated with many risks. Hence, alternative noninvasive BP (NIBP) measurements are used for prolonged monitoring of BP among critically ill patients. Discrepancies between intra-arterial BP (IABP) and NIBP measurement can adversely affect therapeutic decisions and may have a negative impact of outcomes. Objectives: To compare upper limb and lower limb BP measured by auscultatory and oscillometric methods with IABP (by arterial cannulation) in hemodynamically unstable patients. Materials and Methods: Patients in the medical intensive care unit of Pushpagiri Institute of Medical Science and Research Centre were included over 24 months (50 patients admitted) in the clinical cross-sectional study. All patients who had a systolic BP (SBP) below 100 mmHg with an intra-arterial line were included under the study after obtaining an informed consent from the patient/patient's bystander. The study design was approved by the Ethics Committee at Pushpagiri Institute of Medical Science and Research Centre. Choice of cuff size was made based on the limb circumference (midarm and midcalf) and manufacturer guidelines. BP was measured in arm using a welch allyn aneroid manometer. Oscillometric NIBP was relied on an MP20 model (Philips Medical Systems) connected to the nondisposable, reusable cuff. The intra-arterial catheter was connected through a pressure transducer to the monitor (Philips). With the patient supine, the pressure transducer was zeroed at the level of the mid-axillary line and the correct shape of the arterial pressure waveform was ascertained. Measurements: BP was measured at 0 h, 3 h and once the patient becomes hemodynamically stable using auscultatory, oscillometric, and IABP at arm and calf, respectively. Quantitative variables were expressed as mean standard deviation, whereas categorical variables were expressed as frequency (%). Karl Pearson's Correlation Coefficient was used to find our relationship of BP measured by two different methods with BP measured using arterial cannulation. P < 0.05 was considered the threshold for statistical significance. Statistical analyses was performed using a Statistical Software Package SPSS version 20. Results: Out of 50 patients admitted in a hemodynamically unstable state, 68% were male and 32% were female. Male-to-female ratio was 2.125. The mean age of patients was 65.9 ± 12.2. Majority of the patients belonged to the age group 61–70 years (30%) and the least number of patients in age group <50 years (8%). Arm SBP and diastolic BP (DBP) measured by auscultatory and oscillometric method at the arm showed a positive correlation to intra-arterial SBP (IASBP) and intra-arterial DBP (IADBP) at 0 h, 3 h and once stable, which were statistically significant. Similarly, Arm SBP and DBP measured by auscultat","PeriodicalId":413497,"journal":{"name":"Dentistry and Medical Research","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116961896","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This report aimed to report the case of a 21-year-old Nigerian woman who presented with a chief complaint of swelling in the floor of the mouth extending to the submental region. There was associated recent history of pain and difficulty in chewing, speaking, and breathing. Clinical, ultrasonography, and histological evaluations were done to establish a diagnosis of an infected dermoid cyst. The infection was treated with antibiotics, after which surgical excision was done under general anesthesia through nasotracheal intubation. The patient was followed up after the surgery and no complication was recorded.","PeriodicalId":413497,"journal":{"name":"Dentistry and Medical Research","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129874322","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It further aids the health-care professionals to cater to patient needs. This study aimed to estimate longitudinally the changes in the QOL of oral cancer patients in early and late stages and receiving chemotherapy treatment. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective observational study conducted with 400 oral cancer patients receiving chemotherapy treatment at a government tertiary care cancer hospital in Jaipur city. QOL for each patient was measured before treatment, after 6 months, and 1 year posttreatment using the instrument Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Head and Neck version 4. Statistical analysis was conducted with IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences for Windows version 17.0 software (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). For all the analyses, P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: A statistically significant difference in the mean score for physical (P < 0.0001), social (P < 0.0001), and functional (P = 0.001) well-being was recorded for early- and late-stage cancer patients at baseline. Only emotional (0.03) and social (0.04) well-being showed a significant improvement for late-stage cancer patients in contrast to early-stage patients where all QOL subscores improved longitudinally. Conclusion: Early-stage disease is associated with better QOL. Chemotherapy treatment could improve only emotional and social well-being parameters in late-stage disease patients. QOL studies can be fruitful clinical endpoint and should be inculcated in the framework of various tertiary care centers.","PeriodicalId":413497,"journal":{"name":"Dentistry and Medical Research","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131586395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More than half of Indian children are affected by dental diseases. Although several oral health education programs are being implemented at national and regional levels, the goal of optimal oral health seems elusive. During the recent COVID-19 outbreak and the ensuing global lockdown, social media played a key role in disseminating crucial information about the novel coronavirus, leading to appropriate protocols being followed by a vast majority of the population, resulting in the containment of the pandemic. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate knowledge among children about oral hygiene practices and compare them with knowledge regarding COVID-19 preventive measures in view of the role played by social media. Subjects and Methods: An online questionnaire survey was conducted among children aged 10–15 years. Results: A total of 177 children responded to the questionnaire. The results showed that all the participants (100%) followed the correct method of wearing a mask during the COVID-19 pandemic, as advised by social media. More than half of the children (61%) had knowledge about the handwash protocol. Contrarily, only 33% of children brushed their teeth twice a day, 51% of children brushed for 2–3 min, 68% of children had a snacking habit, and only 7.3% of children were aware of the process to be followed in the event of tooth avulsion due to dentofacial trauma. Conclusion: Children are sensitized to information regarding COVID-19 safety measures and therefore followed them better than oral hygiene practices.","PeriodicalId":413497,"journal":{"name":"Dentistry and Medical Research","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132204837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
