We prove a coding theorem and its strong converse establishing the capacity of this scenario for the case of discrete memoryless channels. Specific results are derived for additive white Gaussian noise channels corrupted by an additive Gaussian interference which is available at the transmitter only. We focus on the case where such interference may be absent on the channel, but the transmitter is unaware of this. Applications of the compound channels with non-causal state information arise in the context of multicast and cognitive radio channels, broadcast channels with imperfect channel knowledge and robust dirty-paper coding.","PeriodicalId":412925,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127741498","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are two receivers each interested in the common stream. Each receiver's channel however has a different burst parameter and likewise each receiver tolerates a different delay; both receivers are interested in a common stream. We develop two upper bounding approaches on the streaming multicast capacity. The first upper bound is developed by introducing an erasure channel that introduces periodic erasure bursts, which can corrected due to the multicast property. The second upper bound is based on information theoretic inequalities and is tight at the minimum delay point. Finally we propose a simple multicast code construction by combining the parity checks of two single-user codes.","PeriodicalId":412925,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115607989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was shown that an orthogonal coding scheme achieves the channel capacity per unit cost of memoryless stationary channels with a zero-cost input letter. For degraded memoryless stationary wiretap channels, it is shown that an orthogonal coding scheme achieves the secrecy capacity per unit cost with a zero-cost input letter. We first provide upper and lower bounds on the capacity of this channel. We then show that, when the channel of the transmitter-receiver pair that does not face interference is noiseless, the two bounds coincide and therefore define the capacity region. The obtained results imply that, unlike in the Gaussian cognitive ZIC, in the considered channel superposition encoding at the non-cognitive transmitter as well as Gel'fand-Pinsker encoding at the cognitive transmitter are needed in order to minimize the impact of interference. As a byproduct of the obtained capacity region, we obtain the capacity result for a generalized Gel'fand-Pinsker problem.","PeriodicalId":412925,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125078387","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal of the base stations is to jointly adjust the beamforming vectors so as to minimize the transmission powers while ensuring the signal-to-interference-noise ratio (SINR) requirement of individual users within the system, and keeping lower interference level to other systems which operate in the same frequency band and in the same region. This optimal beamforming problem is a separable homogeneous quadratically constrained quadratical programming (QCQP), and it is difficult to solve in general. In this paper, we give conditions under which strong duality holds, and propose an efficient algorithm for the optimal beamforming problem. First, we study rank-constrained solutions of a general separable semidefinite programming (SDP), and propose a rank reduction procedure to achieve a lower rank solution. Then we show that the SDP relaxation of a class of the optimal beamforming problem has a rank-one solution, which can be obtained by invoking the rank reduction procedure.","PeriodicalId":412925,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125493766","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we will first present the achievable rate region for this broadcasting scenario, and then extend the result to the case with retransmissions. With the proposed nonlinear network coding strategy, the achievable rate region can be achieved without requiring the exact knowledge of a priori information available at the receiver nodes. The broadcasting node simply performs retransmissions with independent codebooks until every receiver node has received the whole set of messages. Through the analysis of network throughput, we will show that each receiver node is able to effectively accumulate mutual information over the multiple transmissions thus achieving higher overall throughput than the conventional random linear network coding strategy.","PeriodicalId":412925,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114908238","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, it is intuitively assumed that random network coded packet retransmissions will result in a lower bandwidth efficiency compared to opportunistic network coded retransmissions as the former involves the delivery of unwanted packets. In the first part of this paper, we show, through simulations, that the random network coded retransmission (RNCR) scheme outperforms the opportunistic network coded retransmission (ONCR) scheme in terms of bandwidth efficiency in a wide range of multicast settings. Motivated by this result, we propose an adaptive algorithm that can dynamically select, from the RNCR and ONCR schemes, the one that is expected to achieve a better performance for each multicast frame. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm almost achieves the optimal performance that can be obtained by combining these two retransmission schemes.","PeriodicalId":412925,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116105852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
